People,

We still need a volunteer to at least help out with our newsletter.

Our coming meeting April 15 is in room W2-48 at 2:00 PM   directions at:

Mr. Ralph Gumbert will give a talk on Terrorism and Emergency Response

Trenton Emergency Medical Service, based in Trenton, New Jersey, maintains a state
of readiness in the advent of an emergency like a terrorist attack, but does not
have as extensive storage capacity for overages. Mr. Gumbert has pointed out that
TEMS has limited space for an overabundance of supplies, but maintains sufficient
stock for an initial response to [for example] a widespread infectious outbreak,
and that Needs exceeding the reserves of TEMS would be met on a 24-hour basis
through our suppliers and vendors.

Ralph Gumbert, RN, CEN, EMT-P, is Trenton Emergency Services Director. Mr. Gumbert
will discuss the current state of preparedness of emergency response teams, the
realities concerning supply needs for emergencies and how to realistically deal
with these issues.

The following meeting, May 20 will be held as a field trip to the Academy of Natural
Sciences of Philadelphia at 2pm.  One of the curators will give us a
special presentation on evolution.  Admission cost is 10$

Along the lines of evolution: There has been an interesting discovery.  My 30 year old
copy of the book, "the Collapse of Evolution" (which I fell for, then) pointed out
that scientists were embarrassed that there simply weren't examples of transitional
species.  The book mentions no proof of the transition from fish to reptiles and gloated
about reputed extinct fish to still exist. Since then, there have been many impressive
examples coming out of the earth to fill in the gaps quite nicely.
Just this week has been announced the discovery of Tiktaalik - a creature that
appears half way between fish and reptile.  It has scales, fins and other fish morphology,
but has a neck, fins that appear to have the bone structure of land animals and it lacks
normal gill bone structure.
There have been a number of evolutionary instances of land creatures going back to the
sea, but not as many examples the other way.   One would expect the first creatures to
make the jump to have unchallenged access to a huge new environment - and hence to
then evolve quickly to fill so many new niches.

In other news of skeptical interest has been the latest most responsible test of prayer
for medical patients to not have results beyond chance.

hoping to see a bunch of you at the April 15th meeting,
Eric Krieg

Hey folks,

a final reminder: we will meet at 2pm this Saturday in the lobby of the
Academy of Natural Sciences for some learning. Find us in the lobby so
we can make sure to get you in for the lower cost group rate. This
should be a good chance to study evolutionary oddities, natural
selection, well adapted creatures in a great museum close that's been in
our area nearly 200 years. Details on the museum are found at:
http://www.acnatsci.org/

An article appeared in the Philadelphia Inquirer about Ted
Daeschler who discovered the fish to lizard transition species,
Tiktaalik. If you think about it, he really discovered the Darwin
"evolving fish" emblem that some of our members sport. I'm going to
propose that we try to offer him an award sometime. Ted also speaks on
behalf of the Academy of Natural Sciences. The article mentioned Ted's
sharing my favorite iconoclastic TV show, "The Simpsons". Sunday's
episode featured Ned Flanders being offended by an evolution display in
a museum - this led to the town debating teaching intelligent design.
Although the town agreed with Lisa Simpson that science and
"intelligent" design could not both be taught- they ended up allowing
only creationism to be taught. Lisa gets arrested at gun point during a
secret meeting to study Darwin. Legal machinations started looking bad
for Lisa until an ironic ape-like fit by Homer convinced all of our
simain heritage. The episode should be as well received by skeptics as
one from several years back where Lisa tries to debunk a phony angel
skeleton - leaving the judge to issue a welcome restraining order that
"religion and science must keep at least 500 feet apart" That earlier
episode featured a fictitious reference to "Jr. Skeptic magazine" which
inspired the real thing at the end of Skeptic magazine.

The only PhACT phunction for the summer is our annual Picnic - but
this time in Buck's County's Peace Valley Park. (take 611 north, to 313
north, go about 2 miles, turn left on New Galena Road, go 1.75 miles and
follow the road on a right turn into the park. We will be in one of the
parking lots on the left hand side. There is a map at:
http://www.phact.org/picnic.jpg
Call my cell (215) 667-1151 if you get lost.

Today's news included Indonesian people refusing to leave an active
volcano and attempting to use ancient ritual to appease the volcano's
spirits:

Please note, our picnic date has been changed to Saturday June 17th.  This is the only PhACT phunction for the summer. This time we are in Buck's County's Peace Valley Park. Take 611 north, to 313 north, go about 2 miles, turn left on New Galena Road, go 1.75 miles and follow the road on a left turn into the park.  We will be in one of the parking lots on the left hand side.  The lake is circumnavigated by a paved path.  Bring stuff to eat or throw.  There is a  map at:
http://www.phact.org/picnic.jpg
Call my cell (215) 667-1151 if you get lost.  We'll see if Susan White isn't afraid to bike the whole way up. Email me if you want picked up at a near by train station.

Our field trip to the Academy of Natural Sciences 2 weeks ago went well for the 17 of us ( including a few kids) attending.  Lots of good questions, discussion and learning .

We are lucky to have member Ray Haupt.  He has been serving as our treasurer, news letter editor-publisher, and keeper of the mailing list.  I hope he doesn't get burnt out.

Local Zoologist, Ted Daeschler recently helped discover the fish-to-lizard transition species, Tiktaalik. (we saw an exhibit on it at the museum)  He recently agreed to be our guest of honor for our Spring PhACT banquet.  We need to come up with some sort of award to honor his historic contribution to science and his excellent job of riding the ensuing media wave.  The world could use an extra Richard Dawkins.

In other news, a prognosticator apparently erred a  in his prediction that our east coast would be  wiped out last Wednesday by a massive tsunami triggered by a comet.  For details, see:
http://www.savelivesinmay.com/
It turns out that last week's chicken little had claimed to have been abducted by aliens in 2004 and that many Moroccans fled coastal areas upon hearing the warning.  In still more news on the irrational:  people in some of the towns with bird flu are convinced their problem is a result of black magic.   Other people over here don't even believe that diseases can evolve and jump species, others feel a government conspiracy to create disease.

A few years back, PhACT got some good media coverage responding to the "Gentle Wind"  cult-health-scam-promoters.  I close with comments about them from William Hornbaker of TN:
The "Gentle Wind" folks showed up in Knoxville, TN a few years back. A local "Instrument Keeper" had contacted a gullible reporter and there was quite a splash piece in the paper. The seminar was $20 and you could try out some of the "Treatment" posters while waiting for the main event. I got to talk with the Instrument Keeper and got a soft sell as I was obviously there to scope out their activities (SCAM). An old battle axe was accepting the suggesssted $20 donation per person which she placed in a 1 gallon glass jar with a flourish as she gave out the tickets. Also selling or accepting donations for several books.

People trying out the posters got into all kinds of grotesque positions to place an affected body part in proximity to the "Healing Vibrations." Never got to see an "Healing Instrument."

Most pififul was the elderly man and his wife who appeared to be in the early stages of alzheimer's disease. They (he) was looking for the seminar room and had to lead her to the ladies room and set her on her way. Didn't appaer to be able to afford the cost of the seminar, let alone any of the promotions.

A googling for Gentle wind project turns up several sites. Photos of "Instruments" which are nothing but fancy looking artifacts of plastic, sand, and other assorted worthless components.

They've been back in town recently, or will be shortly. I saw a flyer

My response: a story of them looking for suckers recently in our area:
http://www.philadelphiaweekly.com/view.php?id=8403

PhACT got mentioned and I got in some good quotes in a story by the Bucks Courier Times which is posted at:
http://www.windofchanges.org/Courier_Times_-_Puck_Power.PDF
Our reference is at the end - Randi and Nickel have been good resources for the same reporter. I thought we ran something about them in PhACTUM.

I had made open respectful offers to the Gentle Wind people to perform a proper test of their claims.  They ignored them. There are former members of the group who claim the group sexually abused them, took all their money and then launched a SLAPP lawsuit against them for speaking out.  Interesting that the lawsuit made reference to a web page that I posted from our pages at:
http://www.phact.org/e/z/gentlewindupdate.pdf
I have no plans to take down that web site or the my sites on Dennis Lee that have been the subject of 2 SLAPP suits.
The Gentle Wind detractors have been trading good information with me on beating back SLAPP lawsuits and they still maintain a web site about Gentle Wind at:
http://www.windofchanges.org/

In my opinion, the cause of defending free speech is a prerequisite to promoting critical thinking. The latest news in Lee's second suit against me:  I decided to defend it myself without using the free legal service my umbrella insurance policy provides (I thought they made it way to complicated last time).  I have already won an early victory by convincing the new assigned judge that this federal lawsuit is essentially a refiling of the original suit.  Hence, Lee has been ordered to provide justification for relaunching a duplicate suit, which I feel would be a very uphill battle.  Although common thinking is "hire a lawyer for any legal problem" - I've so far found that studying law is easier than it was to learn stuff like calculus or physics.   I expect to not just prevail, but to provide open useful info to other whistleblowers who are persecuted by crooks misusing the legal system.

best wishes,
Eric Krieg

Maine AG Files Suit Against Gentle Wind

WMTW, USA
July 14, 2006

www.wmtw.com

AUGUSTA, Maine -- The Maine Attorney General's Office has filed a lawsuit against a controversial Kittery-based nonprofit group.

The Gentle Wind Project designs and sells what it calls "healing instruments" that it said solve a variety of physical and emotional ailments.

Others said the group is a scam.

The attorney general's office accused the group of falsely claiming that their products had healing qualities and of considering the income from their sale as charitable donations rather than sales proceeds.

Prosecutors want the Gentle Wind Project to liquidate its assets, pay the state's legal fees and refund anyone who bought items between 2000 and the present.

People,

The world needs more critical thinking, and we are starting up our fall season:

Decreasing sources of dangerous oil from contentious places has led
many to a second look at radical claims of alternative energy.
I have tracked the long history of false free energy claims  for more than 10 years and
been intrigued by the few from educated folks who aren't obvious raving nut jobs.
This Saturday's speaker is Willie Wong of Princeton University who will
discuss Black Light Power Corporation and the Hydrino atomic theory. If this company
is correct, we could have an incredibly powerful easily available source of energy
and new materials never envisioned before. If wrong, the company is engaging in a
high level of folly. I find it interesting because real scientists work on this and major
investment firms have backed the company, but 10 years have gone by with nothing
significant to show.    directions

If someone is able to pick our speaker up on the way in from 30th street
station, let me know.

Our annual Winter Solstice Party will again be at Bonnie's 6:30 pm Friday December 22 - that
will be our only event for December.

As always, we can use help with: submissions to Phactum, money, getting speakers, and
converting Phactum articles to web pages.  email me with offers.

In recent news of skeptical interest, I used to lack a response to the Intelligent Design claim that
a bacterial flagellum was too complex to have sprung up spontaneously.   Molecular biologists
have been uncovering many cases of likely independent evolution of flagella as well as good
explanations of how the parts would have evolved:

Hi folks,
I'm looking to find a job better suited to my aptitudes, which are in
the areas of language and mathematics. I already have done some

P.S. I'm currently in Philadelphia but could probably relocate.

People,

It's been over 4 years since über-skeptic, Michael Shermer was in town. He will speak promptly at 7pm Oct 13th at the ETHICAL SOCIETY at 1906 S. Rittenhouse Square. Following, the Freethought Society (who are nice enough to let us share the event) will hold their zany "Friday the 13th anti-superstition party"at 8 p.m. upstairs while Shermer remains downstairs to sign books.  Shermer is on tour promoting his latest of many books: "WHY DARWIN MATTERS -The Case Against Intelligent Design"
We are all welcome to join in on their offbeat fun as well.  This meeting is the ONLY PhACT meeting in October.

Stephen Jay Gould called Shermer "a powerful activist and essayist in the service of reason . . . an important figure in American life."   In addition to his skeptical contributions to the world, Michael is also a really cool guy:  He's down to earth, he used to be on "the other side", he has bicycle raced across the continent, he started the Southern California Skeptics, is a columnist for Scientific American, and he's a family man.  PhACT highly recommends people to bring friends for this rare chance to meet him in Philadelphia while he promotes his new book. Please consider buying some of his books, (they make great gifts) and getting them signed by him.  Our own Becky will be running the book table where you can have a chance to buy one and have it autographed - if it looks like they won't all be taken, try to think of people to buy them as gifts for.  Email Eric Krieg at erickrieg@..., if you want in with a few of us informally treating Shermer to dinner earlier ahead of time

Our next lecture at the Philadelphia Community College will be November 18th.
November 18th Science Askew at our regular location in the Philadelphia Community College will be a talk by Don Simanek on SCIENCE ASKEW This is like science crossed with stand up comedy. Gems of science humor, satire and parody from his just-published book of the same title by Donald E. Simanek and John C. Holden. Previews: The age of the universe is a function of time, The illustrated dictionary of physics, The Ideal Scientific Equipment Company, The Hazards of Solar Power, A Religion for the Rest of Us. There may not be time for all these topics. If you'd prefer to just read the book and skip the lecture, go to The Institute of Physics Publishing.

Friday Dec 22 we will have our annual Winter Solstice party in Melrose at Bonnie's again – email Eric at erickrieg at verizon.net for directions
February 17th we will have Tom Delworth speak on Global Warming

Michael Shermer is a best selling author of books like: ("Science Friction", "The Science of Good and Evil", "How We Believe", "Why People Believe Weird Things", "Denying History","Science Skepticism and the Media", "The Borderlands of Science", is the founder of Skeptic magazine and of the international Skeptics Society)
The following is a review of Shermer's latest book:

WHY DARWIN MATTERS
The Case Against Intelligent Design

by Michael Shermer

BOOK REVIEW
Shermer’s newest and most politically aware book to date, Why Darwin Matters: The Case Against Intelligent Design (Times Books/an imprint of Henry Holt
and Company; August 8, 2006; $22.00), examines a topic that is both in our news headlines and close to the author’s heart. “I was once an evangelical Christian and a creationist, so I know from an insider’s perspective both the arguments and the agenda behind them.” Shermer, who matriculated at Pepperdine University with the intent to take a degree in theology, discovered and was seduced by science along the way. For Shermer, WHY DARWIN MATTERS is the culmination of a career devoted to defending the theory of evolution.

Drawing on the substantiated argument behind evolution, and closely examining what is really occurring when the science behind the origins of human life are replaced with the newest brand of creationism—intelligent design—Shermer explains how this very belief, which has captured nearly half of all Americans, appeals to the inherent human need to look for a designer behind life’s complexity. Further, he decodes the scientific evidence to show that evolution is not “just a theory” and precisely how it has achieved the design of life through the bottom-up process of natural selection.

With Shermer’s distinct brand of science-based reason, fused with philosophy, humanity, and soulfulness, WHY DARWIN MATTERS is a compelling, timely, and incisive examination of what is at stake in the debate over evolution.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Michael Shermer is one of the best-known public intellectuals defending evolutionary theory today. The author of eight previous books, he is a columnist for Scientific American, the publisher of Skeptic magazine, and the founder of the international Skeptics Society. He lives in Southern California.

Former PhACT President, Bob Glickman was video'd for a TV show to run tonight:
He will appear on CN8 on Arthur Fennel's show at 10PM talking about ghosts.
It's good when responsible media people at least give some air time for the
skeptical point of view.

January 20 2006 ACLU chapter board members, Bill Ewing, will speak on issues of
free speech.

February 17 2006 we will have Tom Delworth speak on Global Warming - I will be
interested to see if he has been more swayed by the evidence since his talk 4
years ago.

In other news, the Shermer lecture we hosted went well. It was standing room
only and we sold all the copies of the books we had on hand and passed out
plenty of our own literature. The FSGP had a great anti-superstition bash
afterwards.

Our last event with Michael Shermer went really well and had a great turn out (my write up on it follows)
The speaker for this Saturday is Professor Don Simanek of Lock Haven:
http://www.lhup.edu/~dsimanek/home.htm
He will speak on the topic of "Science Askew",  a compendium of interesting areas where people commonly have it wrong.

Consider a way you can help PhACT, we can use things like donations, articles for Phactum, publicity, speaker ideas, help with a major mailing coming up, web assistance, investigating paranormal claims, etc.

Our annual Solstice party will again be at Dec 22 at Bonnie's - email me for directions.  We have an ACLU speaker talking about defending freedom of expression  Jan 20th.    Then we will learn about the controversial subject of global warming Feb 17th.

A few other local events by kindred groups of interest are:

Wed Nov 15 a lecture on the transition species, Tiktaalik.  5:30 to 7 at the Wagner Free Institute of Science.

There is currently a Darwin exhibit at the Frankline Institute   www2.fi.edu

The Penn Science Cafe is hosted by Phact member, Greg Lester on the last Monday of every month 6pm at the MarBar 40th & Walnut.

I close with a reprint of my recent review of Shermer's talk as printed in PhACTUM:
Mike Shermer tells us "Why Darwin is important"   On Friday the 13th of October, PhACT was proud to host a lecture by leading international skeptic, Mike Shermer  at the Ethical Society on Rittenhouse Square.    The local Free Thought society had gotten him for a book signing at their same night anti-superstition bash and were nice enough to allow us to extend the venue with an early lecture.
A standing room only audience of over 200 people were in rapt attention to Michael Shermer.
I felt honored to do a quick plug for PhACT and introduce Shermer to the standing room only audience. Mike who was on a nationwide book promotion tour disappointed no one with his unique fast pace of promoting science and reason. Shermer is a renowned science writer and founder of the international Skeptics Society. He did some reading from his new book he's promoting "Why Darwin Matters"  He talked about his and
Darwin's excursions to the Galapagos Island chain.  Many people weren't aware that Darwin likely delayed and limited promotion of his ideas out of concern for his own and his families religion.  Shermer doesn't just limit himself to the general skeptical position on evolution . . . explaining it and deflating creationist attacks against it.  He goes on and covers deeper topics like how evolution is part of greater effect where emergent order can arise from random processes (like a free market economy).  He proposes a means where religionists can embrace evolution without necessarily having to give up religion.  This is a pragmatic response to the nearly half of American's who presently reject evolution and who are unlikely to question sacrosanct religious beliefs and culture.

During the Q&A portion at the end of reading, many of the questions were along the line of "How do we make them believe?” Shermer reminded us that it is not enough to be against something - we have to be for something . . . .  science, reason, understanding, solving mysteries, advancing the cause of humanity.  To do that, we must avoid the temptation to
refer to peoples' most valued beliefs as "silly superstitions". If we take such an adversarial approach, we lock ourselves out before we ever even start a dialogue. He told us, it would probably be prudent to come up with more sound-bite friendly statements that easily fit on a t-shirt or bumper stickers, because honestly, there is nothing brief about books like Stephen Hawking's "A Brief History of Time".    Shermer took on fears of evolution that lead close to half of our population to reject it.  There is a common but little spoken deep fear in the minds of masses to the effect of "if the masses didn't have religious convictions - the remaining unfettered animal nature would lead to social destruction.    Shermer noted that "if people really did not have any moral values without religion, then the least religious people of all—the scientific community should be out running amuck, committing senseless crimes.  Though the general audience loved this sarcastic syllogism - I did hear an interesting response from one young student who attended, "Most members of the freethinking scientific community were at one time religious and have already voluntary or involuntary had moral values instilled in their minds. "

Shermer gave many excellent defenses for evolution, but his purpose was more than to merely debunk creationist misinformation.  He went on to explain how a good bit of negative human behavior is a atavistic result of evolution supporting characteristics like hoarding, putting on excess weight, slaughtering competing groups and philandering.   Even people's natural difficulty grasping the infinitesimal, eons of times or the vastness of space would be explained from our 10's of thousands of years developing as simple tribal people having no need for such visualizations. Some have posited the deep irony that proclivity for religious belief could its self have evolutionary advantage.  But, he went to describe the utility of evolution explaining emergent properties like market economies or altruism.  As someone sharing Shermer's fundamentalist roots in teenage years, I found it fascinating when Shermer talked about how it should be possible to pitch evolution to the fundy Christians (the only religion to really reject evolution).   The nascent science of "Evolutionary psychology" offers great support for the fundamentalist tenet, "we are born with a sinful nature"  - Shermer reaching out to believers offers he doesn't claim to know how the universe sprung into being and that aspects of it are truly inspirational and wondrous.  He challenges that a God capable of a single creation/intervention that would play out using fixed physical laws to  give rise to us would be way more powerful than a God having to resort to a long string of interfering miracles along the way. In further declaring no necessity for a fight between religion and science, Shermer reminds us that science has shown us that all of creation is far longer, far greater and far more infimintessimal , and far more complex than any original deity promoter dreamed of.

Happy new year - apparently predictions of worldwide disaster for last year didn't pan out so well.

There was a good doonesbury cartoon about political interference with science at:

Please remember this Saturday at 2pm at the Community College of Philadelphia, is the first Phact lecture of the year:
Our January 20 2007 meeting will have a quick recap by me about failed legal efforts to shut down some of my skeptical web pages. But our main speaker is  ACLU chapter board member,  Bill Ewing, who will speak on issues of free speech.

Bill's current activities include membership on the Boards of Directors of the Public Interest Law Center of Philadelphia , the Greater Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition, the Greater Philadelphia Branch of the American Civil Liberties Union and the Mt. Airy Community Services Corporation.

Our constitution limits majority power with the bill of rights and 13th, 14th, 15th and 19th amendments.  The American Civil Liberties Union is committed to preserving these rights, especially freedom of speech, freedom of the press, separation of church and state, equal protection under the law, right to due process and right to privacy.  The ACLU was founded in 1920 is nonprofit and nonpartisan, has half a million members and handles around 6000 court cases yearly. In other news, we are looking to get more local submissions for PhACTUM - articles or even regular columns are great - send to our tireless editor, Ray Haupt at reh215@...       We would like to get more donation money - donations can be earmarked for good causes like -Not having to raise our membership/subscription rate from our low $15 per person year or awards for the media or science promotion   - or  speaker travel expenses (or even towards being able to pay to get a specific speaker)

We could also use a volunteer to help with our web pages.

February 17 2007 Global Warming and Projections of Future Climate Change

by Tom Delworth

Global Warming and Projections of Future Climate Change

As the Earth continues to warm there is accelerating interest
in the topic of Global Warming. In this talk Tom will first summarize
the physical basis underlying global warming, including the tools
used to study the topic. Next we will examine the observational
evidence supporting the conclusion that the Earth is warming in response
to increasing greenhouse gases. This includes evidence both from the
modern instrumental era and paleoclimate records (such as ice cores).
Finally, we will examine a synthesis of projections of future climate
change and their impacts, including estimates of uncertainty. Associated
with this will be a discussion of key highlights from the recently
released report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Biographical sketch
Dr. Thomas Delworth is leader of the Climate Dynamics
and Prediction Group at the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics
Laboratory (GFDL) in Princeton, New Jersy, where he
has been a research scientist since 1984. GFDL is
is one of the world's leading climate modeling centers,
and is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

People,

Now is the time to sign up for our April 21 2007 12:30 PhACT Award Banquet.

Among the arguments that convinced me 30 years ago to reject evolution was
the lack of transition species. I've even read recent anti-evolution propaganda
gloating that nothing like the Darwin evolve fish has ever been found. Well
our guest of honor, Ted Daeschler found it. He is a paleontologist at The
Academy of Natural Science in Philadelphia and will tell us about his work. You
can see an example of how great a speaker he is at:

People,

The PhACT Picnic & Family-Fun-Day is coming up soon, Saturday, June 24 from 1 to
5pm. Bring food. There is a grill in the pavilion we we are renting. The park
has fields to chuck stuff back and forth, a mile loop exercise path, play
grounds, etc. We have reserved the little pavilion in the woods again, so we are
OK even if it rains. Should be a good time, bring significant others and
family.

Directions:
We are in the South East corner of Mondauk Common park. From the turnpike, take
309 north, take 2nd exit and turn right on Susquehanna, turn left at 2nd light
on to Broad St. and make the 2nd left in the 2nd parking lot. Follow the trail
straight up to the pavilion. In the event you get lost, you can call (215)

Hey people,

The world still needs more science and rationality.  We are starting up the fall 2007 PhACT season - remember, 3rd Saturday's of the month in room W2-48 of the West Building at the Community College of Philadelphia.

The latest issue of PhACTUM just came out - do check to make sure you haven't fallen behind in membership.

In other news, we could use help with donations and web maintenance.

Our next lecture is a speaker we last had in 2003, Prof. Walter F. Rowe who is professor of forensic sciences at The George Washington University:

September 15th 2007

Mysterious Delusions: Witchcraft in Salem Village

The witchcraft trials in Salem in 1692-1693 were the largest episode of witch hunting in what is now the United States and the last large witchcraft outbreak in Western Civilization. Over a hundred persons were accused of witchcraft and imprisoned; nineteen witches were convicted and executed. A variety of explanations for this event have been advanced.
In the Seventeenth Century most citizens of Massachusetts believed that witches existed and that the accused were part of a conspiracy to overthrow Christianity and replace it with the rule of Satan. During the Enlightenment many educated persons adopted the view that the witchcraft accusers were frauds and that their fits before the Massachusetts judges were mere imposture. In the last fifty years a new set of explanations has emerged.
Some attempts at explanation have focused on food-born toxins (ergot fungus) or pathogens (encephalitis). Other explanations have emphasized mass hysteria, bitter quarrels within the Salem Village community, the psychological stresses of adolescence and ageing or the psychological stresses experienced during a period of protracted warfare. This presentation will critique the modern explanations in the light of the historical record.

Prof. Walter F. Rowe is professor of forensic sciences at The George Washington University. He holds a PhD in chemistry from Harvard University. Prof. Rowe is a Fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and a former member of the editorial board of the Journal of Forensic Sciences. Prof. Rowe is a longtime student of the Salem witchcraft outbreak and has spoken on this topic before National Capital Area Skeptics (NCAS), as well as the annual meeting of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. He has had a long-term interest in the application of the methods of forensic science to the study of history. Prof. Rowe has applied forensic methods of image analysis to Civil War photography and he is currently applying the methods of forensic firearms examination to archaeological artifacts excavated at the site of the 1866 Fetterman Massacre.

Other meetings I'm working on for the future would be "The Science in Sex" by former Philadelphia Inquirer Science writter Faye Flam.  Faye now has a regular column called "Carnal Knowledge" where she clinically discusses issues of sexuality - usually from a scientifc and historical perspective - frequent explaining the behavior as a product of evolution.

Local Celebrity Mathematician and long time CSICOP fellow, John Allen Paulos has agreed to speak to us on innumeracy sometime in the future, and I'm also going to try to line up a media panel discussion.

Our meeting for October 20 is Faye Flam on "Science and Sexuality". Faye has

Another 911 has gone by. Among what bothers me is not just the irrationality

that many nations news services reported as fact that "Jewish workers were all

sexuality for the past 3 years. Her column has included awkward topics like,
hatred of homosexuality, the science of kissing, elder sex, genital matching,
the history of condoms and the algorithm of attraction.

Directions and updates are found at

Then, November 17th our lecture is "Everything's Relative and Other Fables
in Science and Technology"

Our November 17th speaker is Tony Rothman who is a cosmologist who studies the
Big Bang and related events. He is interested in extremal black holes: black
holes on the verge of becoming naked singularities, as well as on the detection

Happy New Year, people,

There is a great chance to see and meet leading skeptic, Mike Shermer.  We are jointly hosting him at the Philadelphia Ethical Society Building at 1906 South Rittenhouse Square on Tuesday, January 15th, 2008   7:30-10pm.   It will be both a lecture and book signing. Bring money for a donation and to buy books.  His latest book is "The Mind of the Market: Compassionate Apes, Competitive Humans, and Other Lessons from Evolutionary Economics"

an overview by Michael Shermer:

How did we evolve from ancient hunter-gatherers to modern consumer-traders? Why are people so irrational when it comes to money and business? Bestselling author Dr. Michael Shermer argues that evolution provides an answer to both of these questions through the new science of evolutionary economics.

Drawing on research from neuroeconomics, Shermer explores what brain scans reveal about bargaining, snap purchases, and how trust is established in business. Utilizing experiments in behavioral economics, Shermer shows why people hang on to losing stocks and failing companies, why business negotiations often disintegrate into emotional tit-for-tat disputes, and why money does not make us happy. Employing research from complexity theory, Shermer shows how evolution and economics are both examples of a larger phenomenon of complex adaptive systems.

Along the way, Shermer answers such provocative questions as, Do our tribal roots mean that we will always be a sucker for brands? How is the biochemical joy of sex similar to the rewards of business cooperation?  How can nations increase trust within and between their borders? Finally, Shermer considers the consequences of globalization and what will happen if nations allow free trade across their borders.

Dr. Michael Shermer is the Publisher of Skeptic magazine, a monthly columnist for Scientific American , the host of the Skeptics Distinguished Science Lecture Series at Caltech, and Adjunct Professor of Economics at Claremont Graduate University, where he conducts research on the psychology of belief. He is the author of The Mind of the Market, his latest book on the psychology of money, an extension of his last book The Science of Good and Evil: Why People Cheat, Gossip, Share Care, and Follow the Golden Rule. Dr. Shermer is also the author of the bestselling books: How We Believe: Science, Skepticism, and the Search for God, and Why People Believe Weird Things. Dr. Shermer received his B.A. in psychology from Pepperdine University, M.A. in experimental psychology from California State University, Fullerton, and his Ph.D. in the history of science from Claremont Graduate University.

Our February 16th 2pm meeting will be back at the school - a lecture from Dr. Paul Offit on the subject of the safety of vaccines.  Some groups like http://www.vacinfo.org/  claim vaccines cause all manner of evil. A growing number of people have become "skeptical" of the safety of vaccines.  Dr Offit maintains the risks are minuscule compared to the gains and has published over 100 papers related to immunizations and vaccine safety.  He has given testimony and been a media source for lawsuits related to vaccines.

In other news, we could use a volunteer to be the keeper of the skeptics library call me if you can pick up and store some books.

People,

Next Saturday's lecture on Vaccine Safety is another of interest to everyday people.  Some say that vaccines are causing huge numbers of deaths, retardation and disease.  You can see the anti-vaccine position from:

Our February speaker,  Paul Offit, will tell us of the real dangers of vaccines based on real science as well as the far greater dangers of not using them.

Paul Offit, M.D., chief of infectious diseases at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the Henle Professor of Immunologic and Infectious Diseases at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, is an internationally recognized expert in the fields of immunology and virology. He's received numerous awards, including the J. Edmund Bradley Prize for Excellence in Pediatrics and the Young Investigator Award in vaccine development. Dr. Offit has written two books:

Vaccines: What Every Parent Should Know (with Louis Bell, M.D.) and Breaking the Antibiotic Habit: A Parent's Guide to Coughs, Colds, Ear Infections, and Sore Throats.

March 15th 2008 Real Free Energy by Nick Pine
There are all kinds of false promises of free energy.  There are also many forms of renewable
energy that are simply impractical at this time to make a big impact on our energy problem.  But at 2 PM on Saturday March 15, 2008 at the Philadelphia Community College, Nick Pine will lead a PHACT discussion on inexpensive solar house heating with sunspaces at Philadelphia Community College. Houses can be close to 100% solar-heated in Pennsylvania, and solar house heating can be 100 times less expensive than solar electricity, per peak watt, and houses in the Northeast need 5 times more heat energy than electrical energy,so why so much interest in solar electricity, while we still burn oil to heat our houses?

Nick is an electrical engineer by training and a registered US Patent Agent who used to design integrated circuits with time constants measured in nanoseconds and now designs solar house heating systems with time constants measured in days. He lives in Skippack, and he's easy to listen to, and he advocates using basic physics (eg Ohm's law for heatflow) and do-it-yourself commercial greenhouse techniques and
lightweight polycarbonate film glazing and recycled automobile radiators and windshield wiper motors and low-power inexpensive computers and sensors to frugally solar-heat houses and water for showers, with no ugly expensive rooftop p
anels. See http://www.ece.villanova.edu/~nick/ for more about Nick's work.

Philadelphia has the privilege this year of being host to the International Cultic Studies Association's annual meeting. Featured will be people with a variety of kinds of expertise on psychologically destructive groups, and there will be programming tracks specifically for former members, family members, and mental health professionals.

Its being held here is quite fortuitous for me, since I only came to realize in the past couple years that I had once belonged to such a group and that it's continued to have harmful aftereffects. I've already registered for the pre-conference workshops for former group members.

People,

Don't forget the coming meeting with the author of "Scientists Confront
Intelligent Design and Creationism
" this Saturday April 19 at 2pm.

 Saturday, April 19, 2008, 2:00PM

 -- Science Education in Crisis

Mention the name Charles Darwin in a normal social environment and you
will likely get very mixed opinions regarding the truth or fiction of
his massive contribution to science and reason. It so happens that on
April 19, 1882, 126 years ago, Charles Darwin died and by coincidence.
The April 19, 2008 PhACT lecture and discussion will be led by scientist
Andrew J. Petto, Ph.D., the topics being Darwin, evolution, creationism,
and the ongoing tussle between science and religion in America's
public schools. Dr. Petto is a senior lecturer in anatomy and physiology
at the University of Wisconsin, member of the Board of Directors of the
National Center for Science Education (NCSE) since 1995, and is
co-editor of the book Scientists Confront Intelligent Design and
Creationism. Dr. Petto has been active in promoting evolution in state
science education standards in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, working with
education agencies to refine state standards on evolution, biological
variation and adaptation. He has also consulted with several school
districts to improve the presentation of evolution in the curriculum.
Since 1994, Petto has been actively involved in professional development
activities for teachers in social and biological sciences, especially in
the area of evolution education and the sociopolitical forces that
teachers face in presenting this fundamental biological theory. Dr.
Petto's book will be available for purchase.

This meeting will be in room of the Community College of Philadelphia: 17th and
Spring Garden Streets, in troom W2-48 of the West Building .
Free and open to the public.

On May 17th, we have a luncheon panel discussion on Media Integrity with the
Inquirer's Faye Flam, KYW's Tony Romeo, and Fox News' Bruce Gordon.
This is a good chance to hear people from the printed, radio and TV forms of
media report on issues like what makes the news, what changes have occurred
in reporting, how ratings influences what we hear, balance in journalism and
where the news is heading.
This will be at noon at Edibles in Horsham in the strip mall where Norristown Road
terminates into Rt. 463.
This costs 25$ per person, paid in advance to our Treasurer, Ray Haupt.
