I got a DVP5960 when they first came out. Vary nice machine but,
playing on the USB 1.0 would occasionally cause a stutter effect on
complex scenes like snowflakes falling or the opening theme song of
Big Bang Theory. So last month I got a new DVP5990 for just $57.99
with USB 2.0. No more problems with stuttering, and with my new 8Gb
flash drive I haven't burned a disk in weeks.
I'm not sure what the difference is between the 5990 and the 5992 but
all the new players from Philips outperform the old 642. I got my son
a DVP3960 a while back and it works fine as well. Of course he took my
old 5960 for the USB port as soon as I unhooked it. Also a friend from
work said his DVP3960 seems to overheat after a couple of hours and
shut down. My son had no such trouble with his so it's probably an
isolated case.
