I've never made or seen such a file as you describe so I am only surmising.

Would it not be possible to extract the segments manually with VirtualDubMod.

Unless the people you're donating it to use subtitles a lot, I would not bother (or risk) changing the firmware.  The firmware updates for the 642 never added anything useful except tinkering with subtitles so far as I recall.

Hey all:

I haven't been here in a good two years! Time flies. So pardon this question...

What's the last "latest" firmware that will work on the 642 model? If I recall, the last version I was aware about - from here - was firmware for the 630(?) model that had been posted on one of Philips' European webpages and posted here. Is that a correct assessment? I want to donate one of my 642s to a family friend who is a broke student at UCLA so I wanted to make sure I had the latest firmware installed on the unit. Thanks!

My 642 is beginning to show definite signs of age as well. Specifically, it has now become picky re. which discs it plays. Sometimes it refuses to play DVDs altogether though VCDs work fine.

That is why I treated myself to a WD TV (2nd Gen.) recently. Thought about the WD TV Live, but had no real need for the network connectivity feature as of now, though that's great as well. In any case, I use a modded firmware now which allows me to use (wireless) USB network adapters if I so please.

Got one word for it - awesome! Very, VERY highly recommended. Plays nearly everything  (99.9%) I throw at it and the results look and sound simply stunning on my full HD 70-inch LCD TV connected using an HDMI 1.3 cable and my home theatre 7.1 speaker setup with Dolby/DTS HD receiver.

Only issue is that I now have to copy the contents of my existing DVDs to a USB HDD if I want to watch them, though I plan to get an external USB DVD drive soon so I can save some precious time.

With this setup in place I'm finally a happy camper and am watching movies the way I wanted to for a very long time now... :D

- Andrew

P.S. WD puts out updated firmwares ever so often for their players, which is cool. But what's even better is that the GPL code for the Linux-based players is freely available and so there are amazing custom firmwares and even apps that you can use with them that take them to a whole new level!

P.P.S. No, I don't work for WD :D but I am *highly* satisfied with their product, just as I was with the 642 when it came out. I truly believe this is the logical next step for anyone looking to upgrade from the 642 and its siblings.

I recently bought the Philips DVP5990 after hearing of it here. I
must confess gross ignorance of all the formats Mick alludes to here,
if it won't play (e.g. MKV files), my wife and I just watch it on my
24" computer monitor rather than on our 26" DTV. And just the USB
port on 5990 makes it well worth the price. The DVP5990, on my last
visit to my local Costco store, was selling for $50 US. Which is
less than I paid for either of my two DVP642s in the past!

Add to that, the incredibly ingenious (to me, anyway) free firmware hack from:

http://vb6rocod.blogspot.com/search?updated-max=2009-02-14T05%3A43%3A00-08%3A00&\
max-results=7

or: <http://tinyurl.com/qb242j>http://tinyurl.com/qb242j

This hack displays the menus in bright, clear colors, shows LONG file
names, and something like 7 or 8 file item lines per screen.

We have neither cable nor satellite, but I can look out of my window
and see the cluster of local TV broadcast antennas nine miles away,
so an inexpensive UHF antenna works just fine. And since the US
switch to digital, those 4 broadcast stations (PBS, CBS, NBC, and
Fox) have become something like 20 (with the addition of ABC). I go
to Usenet to download any cable or UK programs we want, copy them to
a thumb drive or an external USB hard drive, and plug it into the 5990.

'Tis sweet, indeed!

A long while ago, prompted by the obsolescense of the 630/642 model,
it was decided to open this group to posts concerning all models of
Philips recorders and players. At the same time it was also decided
to leave the Groups name unchanged. I hope this clears up your
apparent confusion regarding this matter.

>I think you should re-phrase this advice which you seem to give all the time.

It is good that we differ in our opinions.

However due to the said units obsolescense, it's inability to properly
display mpeg4 in a resolution other than 4.3, it's inability to
properly display any other mpeg4 quantisation scheme other than H263,
it's inability to display mpeg4 with QPEL, it's inability to display
mpeg4 with multi-warp GMC, it's lack of a USB port and given the
plethora of quite inexpensive, more capable replacements, I stand by
and will continue to recommend replacement.

There are only a few capacitors that have been suspect. If you are replacing
one, it is fairly easy to change a few (you have a warm soldering iron and the
board removed). If you do this and it doesn't work, it was garbage anyways.
Your cost will be about $5-$10 at most and an hour or two of time. I don't like
to throw electronics in the garbage.

"Mick Fisher" mik.fisher@... replied:

>Do yourself a favour and replace this long ago obsolete player.

That might make a lot of sense if this is your primary playback device with an
HDMI (or HD equivalent) set. For myself, I have a regular NTSC type TV with
component input that is generally used for viewing by my children. Having a
pack of low quality AVI's on a DVD to play for them is very nice. Options to
replace are to get another non-HDMI/non-blue ray player which will be obsolete
in a year or two. The other option is to significantly increase the cost to
replace it and get a blue ray player. However, this will not really reach it's
full potential without a better TV. I think you should re-phrase this advice
which you seem to give all the time. If you have an HDTV, do yourself a favour
and replace this player.

There is almost always a cheaper better product coming out in 3-6 months.
Delaying a purchase is not always a bad thing. If I am completely wrong, I
suggest that this group be disbanded as most posts seems to be for other
players.

Regards,
Bill Pringlemeir.

If I had to make a guess I would surmise the units power supply has failed.

Do yourself a favour and replace this long ago obsolete player.

Looking at the bluray players on the philips UK site, the specs
indicate full xvid/divx avi playback capabilities with upscaling.

There is mention of a USB slot at the rear but a user review says it
can't be used to playback recorded media. Hmmm if that's the case
then what is it there for?

I seem to remember reading these players support DivX AVCHD. For some
reason I was under the impression this was, actually, MKV. However I
can no longer find any mention of it. Maybe there is a more detailed
explanation of just what divxHD is on the Divx site.

I think we need to see a proper in depth review of these players by
someone who knows whats what before committing.

As for HD, well I have experimented with using my laptop as a media
center by connecting it to my 32" Panny Viera via its HDMI socket.
After streaming some HD content my opinion is that while it is
sharper, the improvement is pretty marginal. I shall not be going out
of my way to acquire a bluray player or paying extra to recieve a HDTV
service any time soon.

From: http://forum.videohelp.com/topic313696.html

On any other device, pressing the Display key multiple times would
cycle through the display options. On the player however, you press
Display once and then use the Up and Down Arrow buttons to cycle.

Once you get it so that it's only asking for a time to jump to and the
OSD timer has disappeared, press Display one last time and you're all
set.

HTH ?

I dumped my 642 ages ago so I can't test it.
I don't remember having any such problem though.

Haven't given the blue-ray subject any thought at all but after today I'm
wondering.
Is there any difference in picture quality from the Philips 5960??
Mentioned the Philips brand to him and he did everything he could to
convince me that Philips was not the brand to buy. (but then they didn't carry
them either).
Lastly isn't there a Philips player that has USB 2.0. Seem to remember talk
about that. If so what is the # and is that the best right now???
     Thanks...BC

The MG-M2TVD looks like a very nice piece of hardware. The wireless N Dongle
option is intriguing. I'm not sure I understand exactly the problem with your
5992. It sounds like you might be having more of a flash drive problem than a
player problem. I recently learned the flash drives do have a limited number of
read/writes before they stop functioning correctly. It's in the hundred
thousands though and usually only happens when many read/writes per minute occur
such as running an operating system or high use data base on one. Still my
DVP5990 has operated flawlessly averaging 2 to 4 hours of USB playback almost
every day for over a year now.

Sounds like you have it all under control Carl. I'm also trying to remain
hopeful about Windows 7. I've been running the release candidate of 7 for a few
months though and am not overly impressed. Gave up on Vista a good while ago. XP
Pro is still the workhorse around my place.

My thanks to Steve and Lockdude for their help with my problem. What I've
found is that, though there are several utilities out there that can force
the play-order of video files on a USB drive, Windows Vista 64 doesn't want
to deal with them. Nor does its "compatibility" feature. It's not the
first app I've lost the use of in this specious upgrade (holding out faint
hope for Win 7).

And as they explained with such clarity, it's actually quite easy to
achieve the play-order of video files once one knows how selection and
cursor position work! Live and learn--thanks again, guys!

You are correct if you use the mouse which I rarely do. I generally
highlight the last file, hold the shift key and scroll up with the up
arrow key to the first file. Ctrl C to copy or Ctrl X to cut (move),
switch to the other window and Ctrl V to paste then they are copied in
the reverse order selected (first in last out). If you right click in
the middle of the list it does just as you say, something to keep in
mind.

You don't have to explicitly copy the file list to the clipboard,
Windows does that automatically when you do a copy or cut on a group
of files. You can verify this if you use a clipboard extender like
Clipmate or the one I use, ClipCache. Copy a bunch of files and open
the cliplist. You will see the file path and filename listed in the
order described depending on how you selected them. Unfortunately you
can't do much with this list of files except paste them to another
directory window.

I did just discover however that if you copy some files then copy
something else (another file?), open the cliplist and select your
previous clip you can then paste the list into an editor with the full
Path/Filename one entry per line. At least it works with ClipCache.
That'll come in handy.

Now that we've beaten this thread to death I'll leave you with one
more thing. Check out a freeware program called FileMenuTools at
http://www.lopesoft.com/en/fmtools/info.html
Handy little utility. I have no interest in this except as a satisfied
user. That's it, I'm done. Carry on...

Yes there are several ways to copy the files all at once and still have them
load onto the thumb drive in alphanumeric order. First of all it depends on how

From this view you can select a group of files and right click to copy. You can
copy the file list to the clipboard or or you can use the send to option or you

The important thing is that you need to have the point of your mouse pointer on

Windows multiselect (using the shift or ctrl keys) will copy the
filenames to the clipboard in reverse order and do the same thing. You
can watch this happen in a file selection dialog box that allows
multiselect.

To explain for noobs: For contiguous files - Select the last file,
hold the shift key and select the first file. For non-contiguous
files - Select the last file, hold the control key and select the rest
working towards the first. Remember first in, last out.
