Hi there everyone,
As many of you already know, I've spent the past 3-4 months in rehearsal for
A MOUTHFUL OF BIRDS, by Caryl Churchill and David Lan. The performances are
coming up in May, and I would love if you all got a chance to see it.
I've spent the pat year experimenting with ways to incorporate Soundpainting
into my work as a director. Soundpainting is a structured improvisation
technique that was originally developed by composer Walter Thompson for
musicians, but has grown to be a cross-disciplinary tool. It involves a
conductor who uses gestures (similar to Sign Language) to communicate with
the performers, resulting in a kind of collage composition that is built
live in front of an audience. (www.soundpainting.com)
I've been working this year with Soundpainting on actors almost exclusively,
and with devised, adapted, or original material. With A MOUTHFUL OF BIRDS,
I'm taking it a step further -- both by using a published script as the
basis for the work, and incorporating designers and our stage manager into
the performance ensemble. So the SM, the designers, and I will all be on
stage with the actors the entire time, directing and designer certain
elements of the show live every night.
Most of all, this show has been a big, adventurous leap, and is the first
step in a new theatrical direction for me. If you have never seen my work
before, or not for a long time, or keep thinking to yourself, "You know, one
day I should go see one of Tomi's shows," -- THIS IS THE ONE. Please come!
There are only 9 performances, so make sure you buy or reserve your tickets
soon! Postcard attached.
