the title The Cherry Orchard, like The Seagull, names something
that's gone by the time the curtain falls on the fourth act. in this
sense, the play dares us -- compels us even -- to destroy it, to send
Ranyevskaia mercilessly into the unknown while we turn her orchard
into a pile of debris.
in Jovial Crew's cover version of the play, the orchard is the
unadulterated text of Chekhov's comedy and the conventions of realism
that sustain it. we are the unscrupulous Lopakhin and the magical
Charlotta too, and the future -- and the axes -- are on our side. our
cherry orchard is The Cherry Orchard, and we must level it in order
to develop it. as Trofimov says, wild beasts are necessary to convert
one kind of matter into another, even if they have to devour
everything in their path.
with ten actors, two projectors, and one very noisy chainsaw, Jovial
Crew stages the traumatic comedy of the future's hungry march forward.
