Hey there,
In case you didn't know some of those theater folks you know and love
(including me!)are putting on an amazing new show in this year's New York
International Fringe festival, and we need your help! All you have to do
is click a button (and maybe skip that iced latte this week). So forget
Starbucks, forget Subway, and give *Self-Portrait as Schiele* your $5
instead!
Of course we would love for you all to come see this world premier inspired
by the life and work of the Austrian Expressionist artist, Egon Schiele.
But in order for us to put up a show for you to see we are working hard to
raise some money. But hear us out! We don't want your life savings, we
don't want this week's paycheck, we don't even want the price of a movie.
For much less you can help us put clothes on the actors (ok, we admit they
will frequently take them off again, but that's beside the point). If
everyone we know gives $5, we will have the best-dressed (and undressed)
actors ever! So forgo the footlong and give a little!
Just go to our website and you can click to use pay pal to give a little -
super fast and easy! http://www.selfportraitplay.com/Support_Us.html
If you're willing to give more we can make your donation tax-deductible with
our fiscal sponsor, Fractured Atlas. https://www.fracturedatlas
.org/site/contribute/donate/1727. Check out our website for more info abut
the play, or if you would like a sponsorship packet with info on the show
and its creators I will happily send it your way!
And lastly, SAVE THE DATE for our fundraiser party - Thursday, July 24th!!
Stay tuned...
Sincerely,
Eve and
The TheaterMEME team
ps - if you're our friend on facebook (which you should be!) you may have
already seen this there, sorry for the redundancy, but we really need your
help, and hey, it's only $5, right?

As you know, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) went on strike at midnight
on November 5th. You can read all about it here:
http://www.wga.org/subpage_member.aspx?id=2204
Brian K. Vaughan, one of my favorite writers, explains the writers' position
in laymen's terms here:
http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=37507226&blogID=\
325633175
I sympathize with the writers and want them to get what they want and
deserve for two reasons:
1) I am a writer (albeit not a unionized one), and *I'd like to think that I
work in an industry where writers get the respect they deserve*. Very
often, Hollywood will be really deferential to actors, directors, and
producers, but treat the writers like the red-headed stepchildren. It's
really inexcusable, considering that without the writers, the entertainment
industry would be far less entertaining. They're not asking for anything
unreasonable, and they should not be denied the opportunity to earn a living
in this industry that's already making other people so much money.
and
2)* I WANT TO BE ABLE TO WATCH "LOST" IN FEBRUARY!* If the AMPTP doesn't
cut the shennanigans, give the writers what they deserve, and end the strike
in time for the long-awaited fourth season to be written in its entirety,
I'm going to go to L.A. and punch every producer in the face!
Some of you may be members of one union or another. Some of you, like me,
are artists who are not members of a union yet, but hope to be someday. All
of you watch TV and go to movies. I read that the WGA was welcoming
non-union supporters to picket with them. While I don't have time for that,
I thought I would send a letter to the AMPTP expressing my support for the
writers as a viewer. Thought I'd get other interested parties to do the
same.
If the spirit moves you, and you'd like to extend your support, you can
contact the AMPTP here: http://www.amptp.org/contactus.html
You can either:
* Send an e-mail via their online form (quick and easy!)
* Send a letter to the mailing address on the page to the attention of
AMPTP president, Nick Counter (nothing has the knives-out poetry of angry
letters stacked on a desk!)
* Or you can call the phone number on the page and leave a polite message
with Nick Counter's assistant (depending on how concerned you are about the
whole thing).
Your letters don't have to be long. It can be something like this:
*Dear Mr. Counter,
I am a television viewer and movie-goer. It is the job of your organization
to make and keep me happy so that I continue to go out and buy things,
thereby keeping your advertisers happy and those in your industry gainfully
employed (and also happy). What would make me happiest at the moment would
be if you treat the WGA fairly and give the writers what they want and
deserve to successfully end this strike. The entertainment industry needs
its writers. It also needs its audience. The longer we have to sit through
re-runs, the less likely we'll be to keep coming back - especially when we
have On Demand cable, Netflix, and YouTube to keep us warm. I'm writing
this note, as one of the many viewers you are trying to court, to express my
support for the writers. Thank you.
Sincerely,
(your name here)*
Or something like that. In fact, feel free to steal that and alter it for
your own purposes. Feel free to forward this e-mail to anyone you think
might be interested, too, as there is power in numbers. Post the links I've
included in your blogs, on your networking sites, or on any relevant message
boards you visit. I would love the writers to know that it isn't just
fellow union members who support what they do, but average viewers across
the country who enjoy the stories they tell, and want to keep them coming.
Thank you!

Hi Everybody!
I'm a PHTS Alumni and this is a project that I'm currently working on
and thought you folks might be interested. Heck, you could buy a credit
for yourself and/or PHTS for just a $1 donation. :-)
**
LOS ANGELES, CA Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon, Pierce Brosnan,
Christina Ricci, and Stephen Colbert are just a few of the dozens of
celebrities that have joined over 7,500 people from 45 countries to
produce a 70mm film that will last only one second.
The innovative non-profit collaboration, aptly titled "The 1 Second
Film," creatively utilizes the internet to enable anyone in the
world to become a film producer along with major stars, simply by
donating $1 or more via the film's website: www.the1secondfilm.com
<http://www.the1secondfilm.com>
"A lot can happen in one-second," says Nirvan Mullick, an
award-winning director turned social-entrepreneur, who started the film
7 years ago while a student at California Institute of the Arts. A
single second of animation consists of 24 frames of film. In this case,
each frame is a giant collaborative mural painted by hundreds of people.
Nirvan began fundraising after graduating, setting out to bring the
world together for one second. With no budget and a simple Xeroxed flier
he began pitching the film to anyone he met. His first celebrity pitch
was to George Clooney, whom he ran into in a Burbank parking lot. "I
was pretty nervous," Nirvan admits, "Clooney passed, but later I
got a dollar from a lady at the grocery store."
After that initial encounter, Nirvan continued to improve his marketing
materials and his 1 Second pitch. Hundreds more donated and soon even
randomly encountered celebrities started chipping in. Christina Ricci,
met on a sidewalk, donated $5.50, Spike Jonze became a $12 producer at a
movie theater, and Tom Arnold gave $100 outside of the Hollywood Guitar
Center.
Nirvan made a website listing the celebrity and non-celebrity producers
in order of amount donated. Word spread virally, and thousands around
the world began donating online. Dozens of Christina Ricci fans have
since given $5.51 to be listed above the star, while comedians Tom Green
($220.00) and Andy Dick ($211.11) are engaged in an escalating battle
for top billing.
After raising over $160,000 of a $1,000,000 goal, the production
recently launched it's own online social-network, giving its
thousands of producers unique profiles. "Imagine if everyone on
MySpace was making a movie together," says Nirvan, "that's
the goal. Micro-collaboration."
"I love what these guys are doing, and the way they are doing
it," says Kiefer Sutherland, one of the film's top Executive
Producers, who recently donated $600.23 at a restaurant.
With thousands of producers, from gas-station attendants to the director
of Independence Day, the film's end credits will last an astounding
90-minutes. A star studded "making of" documentary will
accompany the feature-length credits, detailing the (often absurd)
adventures of bringing the world together for one-second. All profits
raised by The 1 Second Film will be donated to charity.
A two second film is already in development (The 2 Second Film). For
more information please visit www.the1secondfilm.com

there...

*Call for Submissions*
Studio 42 is a not-for-profit production company dedicated to supporting New
York City's emerging artists, creating new work for the stage and producing
theatrical experiences for the contemporary audience.
We are currently seeking submissions for development through our 2007-2008
season.
Studio 42 provides emerging artists with a multi-tiered development and
presentation forum. Over the past 5 years, Studio 42 has established
numerous partnerships with writers, directors, performers, designers and
other theater artists and provided resources to help them create honest and
challenging work. An arsenal of established programming -including our
"Trials and Errors" reading series; "Studio Sessions," a multi-medium
performance series; and "The Scattered Festival," a week-long series of
workshop productions - combined with customized development strategies,
enables Studio 42 to assist in the development of varied works from concept
to full production.
This past season, Studio 42 produced the world premiere of Laura Von Holt's
*Giants*. Giants was developed by Ms. Von Holt in conjunction with Studio
42 over the past year through a series of readings, workshops, and
dramaturgical revisions leading to production.
Of *Giants*, The Village Voice said:
" Von Holt's writing is impressively disciplined and measured. Her total
commitment to her idiosyncratic fantasy-genre vision and invented language
is matched by Jen Wineman's understated direction .the poetic voice is
original and refreshingly pop-culture-free. Whimsical without winking,
Giants may be the most charming end-of-the-world story around."
Interested playwrights should submit their bio and a logline for original
works to: *Michael@...* <Michael@...>

Hi there everyone,
As many of you already know, I've spent the past 3-4 months in rehearsal for
A MOUTHFUL OF BIRDS, by Caryl Churchill and David Lan. The performances are
coming up in May, and I would love if you all got a chance to see it.
I've spent the pat year experimenting with ways to incorporate Soundpainting
into my work as a director. Soundpainting is a structured improvisation
technique that was originally developed by composer Walter Thompson for
musicians, but has grown to be a cross-disciplinary tool. It involves a
conductor who uses gestures (similar to Sign Language) to communicate with
the performers, resulting in a kind of collage composition that is built
live in front of an audience. (www.soundpainting.com)
I've been working this year with Soundpainting on actors almost exclusively,
and with devised, adapted, or original material. With A MOUTHFUL OF BIRDS,
I'm taking it a step further -- both by using a published script as the
basis for the work, and incorporating designers and our stage manager into
the performance ensemble. So the SM, the designers, and I will all be on
stage with the actors the entire time, directing and designer certain
elements of the show live every night.
Most of all, this show has been a big, adventurous leap, and is the first
step in a new theatrical direction for me. If you have never seen my work
before, or not for a long time, or keep thinking to yourself, "You know, one
day I should go see one of Tomi's shows," -- THIS IS THE ONE. Please come!
There are only 9 performances, so make sure you buy or reserve your tickets
soon! Postcard attached.

fair-weather terrorist Patty Hearst, the first Cali-Heiress to blow away

*Looking Back * is a trilogy of three short operas, each exploring, in a

Anniversary* : Claire waits at the cafe where, a year ago, she first met
Michael. In a moment of passion they made a vow to reunite there every year,
regardless of what might happen between them. *The Painter*: Hugo is a
talented young artist whose wife is murdered. Driven insane by guilt and
grief, he starts to see his paintings come to life around him--and start
telling him what he should do to avenge her. *Looking Back*: Charley and

*MuscleBound * is a candid journey of motivation, determination,
sacrifice, and loss as we follow the life of Nick Gallo on a downward spiral
over the course of one year. Nick is a newly married documentary filmmaker
who fanatically makes a documentary on male body image issues by diving into
the gym culture. Throughout the piece, the question of "how far would you go
to get the body you've always dreamed of?" is constantly posed. Projection
is used throughout the show to reveal Nick's filmed documentary. The footage
depicts real interviews that the playwright captured first-hand of men
openly discussing their thoughts on their bodies. As the documentary
unfolds, Nick's perceptions of himself and the characters around him come to
life.
A workshop of *MuscleBound* will be presented as part of the SFF07
Groundwork series.

Hey Tomi!
This is Meredith Berg, you were my mentor in...2000?
2001? Seriously, all the years blend. : )
This festival sounds awesome and I wish I was in NYC
to see it! But I had a quick question that is off
topic from that that I thought perhaps you would be
able to help me with.
I am looking for a theater that has catwalks for an
independent film my company will be shooting in June
of this year. Preferably, the theater could be
outside of Manhattan, but within Mnahattan is doable
too. Since it is a low-budget film, they do not have
tons of money for the rental, but there is a little
and it is for an AMAZING project starring Elle Fanning
(Dakota's younger sister), Felicity Huffman and
Patricia Clarkson.
Do you know of any theater that has catwalks? Or even
just one catwalk? Any help would be hugely
appreciated.
I hope you're well. Those plays and presentations
sound very intriguing! I hope you're enjoying the
Spring! : )

I have noticed that I am an amorphous being. With my mother I am "getting
married in June" and "employed." My friends would refer to me as the "wild
one" with an "entertaining drinking problem." My boyfriend brags to his
friends about his "sexually deviant vixen that enjoys being cheated on."
Whatever the company, I know who I am. It's when I'm alone that things
become vague...* The Number Jane * is the story of the discerning women who
recognize the necessity for multiple role-playing in their everyday lives.

There's this ninja, and this guy in a white tuxedo, and they're playing
chess on one of those life-sized chess boards, only they don't know the
rules. They're also trash-talking each other in a faux-Elizabethan dialect
and threatening each other with deadly weapons. Then this guy dressed like
Vince Lombardi comes in with a team of medics, and it all kind of goes
downhill from there. *Chess'd! * is about completely clueless people
wielding deadly power. The inspiration for which I think is probably fairly
evident. Have you *looked * at a newspaper recently? But *Chess'd *! is also
about the way that people communicate--all the trappings of heightened
speech can be in place, and we can repeat ourselves ad infinitum in absurdly
convoluted ways all we want, but at the end of the day, what is anybody
actually saying to anybody else?

Julia Bennet has a laundry basket on her head and a tennis racket in her
hand. She is at war with an errant bat. It is three in the morning on a
Tuesday night when she decides it is time to move out of this house.
Enlisting the help of her adult children, Julia begins packing up the
history of the family Bennet, and discovers that after countless dead pets,
the suicide of her eldest daughter, and some frightening experiences with
reality television, she is content to be "that spooky lady on the hill, who
teaches piano to those brave enough to try." Also...she finds a raccoon in
the attic. In the conclusion to the five play "Porch Cycle," the family
Bennet is re-united for one last reading of their own private porch play.
A reading of *Play Five* will be presented as part of the SFF07 Groundwork
series.

Hey everybody,
This is Meredith Berg, Blue Group in '98, graduated '02 - I am looking for a
location for a
low-budget independent film. We are desperately seeking a theater that has a
catwalk or
catwalks. Again, this is a very low-budget film so we don't have tons of money
for the rental,
but it's going to be a terrific film from the people who made "Half-Nelson" and
the upcoming
"Stephanie Daley" and it stars Elle Fanning, Felicity Huffman and Patricia
Clarkson.
If anyone has any leads in the New York area (outside Manhattan preferable, but
Manhattan
location is doable) that would be awesome.
Thanks!
--Meredith
A thousand pardons to those who may have read this message already,
either from Joe Travers of Swordplay Stage Combat or on one of the
boards I also post on.
Joe and I are looking to fill out the ranks of a single sword class
we started last week, essentially part 1 of an SAFD Skills
Proficiency Test class. In order to get more bodies in the room,
we'd be happy to host anyone who wants to take just the remainder of
part 1 as a brush-up, or anyone who wants to take just part 2 AND
who has the requisite training hours in single sword to qualify for
an SAFD skills proficiency test (If you are unfamiliar with SAFD
training rules and particulars, go to www.safd.org). Of course, your
eligibility to test under such circumstances will be at Joe's
discretion, as it will be up to him to decide whether or not you
have met the requirement of 30 training-hours or not.
Furthermore, Joe is very open to the possibility of tacking on a
little extra class time for anyone who wants to re-certify in any
lapsed SAFD weapon styles. If your certificate is over 3 years old,
or you feel you need a brush-up, or if you just miss the sound of
clashing steel and slap-knaps, then come join us!
Classes are Wednesdays and Fridays in Manhattan from 7:00 - 9:30,
with Knife and re-cert stuff scheduled seperately.
Test will be in late May/ early June.
Swordplay can be contacted at 212-726-2400 or at

On a fantastical island ravaged by war, two siblings - the diminutive yet
fiery Button and the oversized, militaristic Giant - wage their own private
battle. Reveling in dark whimsy, Laura von Holt's New York debut follows the
two extraordinarily mismatched characters as they search for love and
struggle to survive and in a magical but broken land. A fairytale for the

<< Well, the thing is, with most website-based forums, you can program your

But is that the case with this forum? And even if it is, what do we gain
by moving to a web-based forum? For example, with yahoogroups, I can not
only receive e-mails, but receive them in a daily digest format, which I
don't know to be possible with a web-based forum. I appreciate the
trouble that has been taken to create one. I just don't see the benefit.

I like the idea of a web forum, but I don't see any controls however, for
altering posts, reading archives, creating a secure login name, or forwarding
posts as e-mails. If it doesn't have the functionality of the Yahoo Group, why
use it? I'd rather endure spam that it takes a whole two seconds to delete than
use a forum which has no controls, no forwarding, and no security.

IMHO, a website-based forum is not as good as an e-mail one. I'm just
not going to remember to visit that forum. Also, with all the e-mail
