When you say two rows of blanks, do you mean two rows of blocks? If so,
you likely didn't set the line delay in HyperTerm before you downloaded
the file -- that's what happened to me when I did that.
Try reconnecting it to your PC and get into the boot loader, confirm
your HyperTerm setup and send the file down again. Also, the file you
want to send is the .hex file, I believe.

Subject: [picpac] Picpac is now silent
HI Group,
After completing my Picpac assembly, I was eager to load a
packet monitoring program, I located a file in the group files
named "Packet.asm", after setting up HyperTerm and seeing the
01> on the screen I started loading the file using send a text file.
Picpac never responded fact is,
It's dead. Picpac is silent and displays 2 rows of blanks.
Can the PIC16F87X be reset?
Is it the program I loaded the problem? It's from the DECODE1
folder.
Or do I have another problem?
I could have had a problem before loading, never seeing another
Picpac I am not sure, What I mean
Is on the LCD on start up displayed the words PICPAC to the extreme
left in the upper row and the contrast was poor the letters were
very faint at the best position of the trimmer.
Since the failure the display is dark and crisp, with no letters, no
tones, the red LED is lit.
Thanks my direct mail is aa1pi@... 73 Bob
