Re: [picpac] Re: PICPAC for sale

A few years ago I purchased a picpac along with a TT3 with intended use for tracking rockets. I then bought a VX 150 radio and a microtrak 300.

I have assembled the units and stuck them in drawer until I got my ham license.
That was 2 years ago and still no license. I got excited hearing success so I do plan on taking the test this winter.
What are the advantages/disadvantages of using a microtrack vs a beeline? What type of antenna should be used with the microtrack. What else do I need to Know

Thanks,

Mike Whorley

You using a Beeline 70cm GPS radio or a 2 meter Byonics transmitter?  I suspect
a 70cm one as a 6 element Yagi for 2m would be mighty big!

I find the PicPac useful in that one just needs a audio cable to plug into it
The TT4 one has to do everything through the DB9 socket.  Of course the
TT4 has more features for Ham radio use.

Yes, I used this unit for rocket tracking. It has PicTrak loaded. I
connected directly to my Garmin etrex Legend via serial cable (with
null modem adapter). Works great--you can watch the position of the
rocket waypoint change during flight. After landing, just set up a
GOTO the last known position and walk or drive to the rocket.

My receiver is a Yaesu VX-2R. Antenna is a homebuilt 6-element Yagi.
