No, but you may be able to write code to do that starting from the sample code.

The source is not currently available, but may be in the future. I
have no plans to stop production of the TT4, and if/when I did, I
would likely release the source.

I would recommend a Tiny Traker 4 (TT4) with the optional display.  Both devices are foiund at http://www.byonics.com.

I am currently using a TT4d (display version) with an FT8800 through the data port with great success.

Hi...
I would like to put together a mobile APRS system which would have the following functionality. ..

Receive APRS packets, display on screen and, if necessary, plot on GPS
Receive APRS messages and display
Transmit location APRS packets from connected GPS

Would the PICPAC be appropriate in this situation?

I have a Yaesu FT8900 and Garmin GPS. I also have a TT3+ which I have been using up to now. Would this equipment suffice or would I need more?

thanks all

Thanks for the reply Byon.
Having read a little more about the TT4D (with LCD etc) it seems that this would
be perfect.

This unit is

The PicPac went out of production because of lack of parts I believe and it was
a dead end design wise.  The dead end part might have been the real reason though.
You might be better served by getting a tiny trak 4 and if you need a display, do the display
option on it.  To connect to a serial GPS one just needs a null modem adapter or make one and you have the position data go right into the waypoint table of the GPS for tracking.

I just uploaded this file.
It is a small test program.
It takes the coordinates you enter and sends a message out the serial
port to a Garmin GPS.
I am trying to verify that the packet format is correct.
It works fine on my Etrex Summit.

This could allow adding waypoint plotting directly to any Garmin GPS
as I think all support the binary format.
I know mine, the Summit, does not support the NMEA waypoint upload.
So getting the binary working is a step forward.

To use:
Hook up your GPS to a serial port on your computer.
Enter this port number in the edit box in the program with the format
COM1
Use the default location or change it as needed and hit one of two
buttons.
Short or Long.
Hopefully the First button works on everyones system.
It is a shortcut to sending the data in an effort to keep the PIC
code small.
The longer method follows the specification in the Garmin
documentaion.

Let me know if yours works or if there are issues.

Thanks,
Robert

Thanks, Kurt. I know what you mean.

If you get my HT1C/HT1P cable, you could just clip off the mic line,
and have a power and earphone plug, but you probably are already aware
of that.

Hi Byon,

An audio jack like the Pic Pac had so one could just plug
a line from the earphone jack of the radio to the TT4 for those that just want
to track and not transmit. Was so convenient.

I have been playing around with the Pic-Trak sw and would like to use
it at a fixed station to just monitor packets and TX my position.
However, there isn ot way to enter a Lat / Long. I placed my Lat /
Long in the status message as a work around. The problem is that most
trackers will not decode the status message and extract the position.
Is there a way to get the Pic-Trak to TX a postion without a GPS?

BTW, I had the energy detect problem on the PICPAC where I could not
get anyhting to TX unless I enabled the TX busy. I did some research
and found that there shouild be a 100pf cap in parallel with R1. I
made that change and the others suggested here - R2 is 100K and added
some decoupling caps to the MX614 and PIC. The PICPAC is working
great - very good decode and no lockups. TX busy is set to off, quit

I am not the seller but I use one for rocketry. Can take the $GPWPL words from the output and input it into a Garmin GPS that will take a
serial input. A GPS unit that just has a USB input will not interface.
A Garmin Legend will work and a unit like a Garmin 60Cs which I think
is OOP or a 60CsX that have both a serial and USB input will work.

The APRS position reports get entered into the GPS' waypoint table and one
can simply have the unit navigate to, to the position. Really a neat thing. I have directions for the three wire DB9 cable available.
I think I posted them here if you look and do a search.

Another thing is if the signal is lost the last known position stays on the map. When a new signal is acquired, the icon moves to the new spot.
If a PicPac is accidentally shut off the lat/long is lost on the display.
If one has it interfaced to a GPS, that is not a problem.

If you don't get a PicPac, a Tiny Trak 4 can be modified with a display
and do the same thing. Only problem with the TT4 is one can't simply plug
the audio out from the radio earphone jack like could be done with the PicPac.

Hi Mike,

+ The BeeLine GPS integrates the functionality of the MT-300, GPS and
battery into a single unit, so it's smaller and lighter with no
cables. The enter thing easily fits into most 54mm nosecones as well
as a 38mm coupler tube.

+ The BeeLine uses a Trimble GPS that is better than many consumer
grade GPS units at tracking rapidly changing altitudes present in HPR
rocketry (don't even think of using SiRFstarIII based GPS units, we've
got side by side data to show that there are some severe problems).

+ The BeeLine GPS records the flight, and the downloaded data can be
viewed via Google Earth.

+ The BeeLine runs on 70cm, so a 1/4 wave whip is smaller (~6") than
the 2 meter version (~19"). If you're using a Yagi on the ground as a
receive antenna, you'll appreciate the smaller size even more.

- The MT 300 has a higher output power (but the BeeLine works from 20+
miles line of sight).

- The MT 300 has more options when it comes to programming the device
parameters.

- The MT 300 + external GPS is cheaper than a BLGPS.

For the MT300, I'd recommend an antenna similar to the ones used for 2
meter handheld radios.

What else??? Oh -- A 5 watt 2 Meter version of the BLGPS is also
available for tracking your car, your balloon, your dog, whatever ;)

A few years ago I purchased a picpac along with a TT3 with intended use for tracking rockets. I then bought a VX 150 radio and a microtrak 300.

I have assembled the units and stuck them in drawer until I got my ham license.
That was 2 years ago and still no license. I got excited hearing success so I do plan on taking the test this winter.
What are the advantages/disadvantages of using a microtrack vs a beeline? What type of antenna should be used with the microtrack. What else do I need to Know

Thanks,

Mike Whorley

You using a Beeline 70cm GPS radio or a 2 meter Byonics transmitter?  I suspect
a 70cm one as a 6 element Yagi for 2m would be mighty big!

I find the PicPac useful in that one just needs a audio cable to plug into it
The TT4 one has to do everything through the DB9 socket.  Of course the
TT4 has more features for Ham radio use.

Yes, I used this unit for rocket tracking. It has PicTrak loaded. I
connected directly to my Garmin etrex Legend via serial cable (with
null modem adapter). Works great--you can watch the position of the
rocket waypoint change during flight. After landing, just set up a
GOTO the last known position and walk or drive to the rocket.

My receiver is a Yaesu VX-2R. Antenna is a homebuilt 6-element Yagi.

Was this used for rocketry?

I am not the seller but I use one for rocketry. Can take the $GPWPL words from
the output and input it into a Garmin GPS that will take a
serial input.

have directions for the three wire DB9 cable available.

I am running PicTrak ver 1.01 on my pic-pak, and it is decoding inbound
messages without fail. However, I cannot get it to transmit. I am using
it with an Azden PCS6000, which works fine with my Tiny Trak 3. I tried
it with and without JMP1 installed, without any success.

My guess is that I don't have it configured properly from a hardware
standpoint. Do i need to have a GPS receiver plugged in for this to
transmit? Do I need pins 1,4, and 6 and pins 7 & 8 on J4 jumpered for
it to transmit??
