I have no idea how much I paid for it. How does $20 USD sound? I've got no idea on shipping. If you give me your address, I can see what UPS says.

if all you want to do is play a mp3 file via the door bell press,
there are more appropriate devices that can be used. For starters:

Hello from Hummelstown, PA! (It's near Harrisburg.)
I've been researching the notion of hacking together an mp3 doorbell,
and a websearch hit on the PJRC website. Btw, yes, I noticed the bit
about not being available anymore. Frankly, I can't see that the mp3
player industry drove sales _that_ low - aren't there enough hackers out
there to keep things going somewhat?
Thus, I might be interested in buying a used unit.
I need to know exactly what these units can do. E.g. can it be triggered
it to play 1 file and stop (as opposed to continuous)?
Does it merely play files from a list, or can it be set to randomly pick
a file?
Can I adapt USB hardware to it (to use a flash drive - just to make it
easier when I want to add files)?
I'm sure that there are other concerns to see if it's practical for my
application.

I have 3-4 gig of music on my player and a 32 mb simm. Some of my
MP3's are 300-400 meg each. (one long song, captured internet stream)
and they all play just fine. I would try a different simm, as suggested.

Folks,
I've got a bunch of mp3 player boards, a few displays and one
completed player going free to a good home.
The price is the cost of shipping from Canada (via paypal I guess).
Weight is 2kg, postage costs at www.canadapost.ca

The new design overcomes the limitations of the 8051 by offloading much of the
data transfer (drive->ram, ram->mp3 decoder) in the FPGA. So, for the most part,
the 8051 is kept idle when an mp3 is actually playing. The 8051 is only really
involved when parsing the directory structure and in setting up an mp3 to play.
Once playback is started, the processor doesn't do much other than update the
display.
-Laine Walker-Avina
I am not sure about the particulars of this design. It may be a limitation of the decoder chip used for this version of the hardware or maybe they 8501 could not set correct parameters for the decoder.

Hey ppl,
Im currently researching into 8051 based mp3 players and you guys have
overcome the processing power limitiations of the 8051.
Can you tell me what it is in the old mp3 player
(http://www.pjrc.com/tech/mp3/old_player.html)
That prevents it from being able to handle anything greater the 192kbit/s
Is it the speed at which it can access the hard drive?
Also would you know the processor loading for each part of the firmware?
i.e. what % is spent hd access, serial transfer to decoder, idle etc
Many Thanks,
Ryan.
Are you interested in a CS programming description of a EE design
description?
I am not an EE so I can only give a waving of the hands about most
things. (I think) Essentally the FPGA is used as an IDE, RAM and DMA
contoller. On startup, the mp3 decoder is initilized and the files are
indexed. A file is opened, read in, and stored into the RAM buffer
until either and EOF or OOM. After this is completed, blocks are
copied from RAM and sent to the MP3 decoder. This step is then repeated.
Everything else is extra that make the player work in a pleasing way.
ID3V1 information is displayed, the file tree is used for a file
browsing display, audio levels can be adjusted, play can be paused,
tracks skipped forward or reverse and so on.
There is extensive schematic files on the web site and the C/asm
source code can be downloaded.

from where to where the data is sent while a next file or anything
command is given to it ,which performs this operation
please help me, iam doing project on that.
Try using the 8MB SIMM and see if it works. Maybe the 16MB SIMM is
not ok.
I have a 32MB simm and arround 65G of mp3 files and no problems at
all.

First I used a 8MB SIMM and had around 3GB MP3 on the disc in a lot of
directories and every thing was fine.
Now I added 20 albums by deleting the whole disc and write back the new
package of now 4.6GB. And I changed the SIMM to 16MB to be able playing
longer songs.
Now I realize that the most of the old albums are played correctly. But
the last few albums of the old package and the new albums showing the
following effect:
When a song was played it dosn't load the next one from the disc. A
part of the next song seems to be already in the SIMM and it plays it
until the end of memory is reached. Then the rest of the song is
loaded. The load from disc is now somewhere in a song depending on the
length. When I switch off my player in such a position and switch it on
again the last title played starts somewhere in the middle of the song.
What did I wrong???
I want create an mp3 player that can play aac's and output to 4 speakers.
(for Car audio)
Any idea how this might be possible ?
I found a very nice IC for mp3 decoding it's called:
VS1033 this can decode acc's and wma as well, and all this at 320 bps
But it decodes acc to 2 channel audio
99% that i will use this chip in my project, witch interfaces whit an
already professionally produced car audio CD player (KENWOOD KDC5070)
I will completely remove cd player and replace it whit my custom built
mp3 player, only need to solve level differences, for the audio levels
of the original cd player and the above chip.
Currently i am having some thoughts about what micro-controller i
should use. Would probably go whit atmega 16, but if i could find a
developing platform and cheap IC's of a 32 bit microcontroler, so i
could incorporate additional functionality, Thinking about changing
LCD display to graphic one, and displaying more info then just what
music is played, like what's the inside or the outside temperature..
and stuff...
First things first. I need to decode and analyze comunication between
the 2 mc's of the KENWOOD KDC5070.
One might ask, why i am doing this... To learn :D and for funn.
the guys at pjrc have decided to leave the country for a bit and
didn't post it on there web site so the week it took me to figure that
out put me in a bit of a bind.
I will pay full listed price plus what ever for the hd/ram of anyone
who can send me a complete pjrc mp3 player(Rev C or later) with
display. I will also accept the display with buttons alone because i
have been offered the board by itself. ill take the parts however i
can get them.
the parts will need to be mailed same day or over night
i can pay you with paypal, a wire transfer, or any other form of
payment that does not put me at risk.
thank you,
-Robert

Dear MP3 friend,
I do have the same problem, my board was working well until I blown
the
87C52. I bought a new from PJRC and now after booting it
says "waiting
for the hard drive" and "experimental dev release" and the date of
the
release. It prints 15 to 20 seconds of dots and then loads from the
hard
drive. Plays a music and when I trie to change file it prints a lot
of
dots and then boots again. I checked the power and everything that
could
be checked. Please if you have a solution I would like to have it
too.
Thank you all.
