The Plazes.net website and API service are ceasing operation as of August 15, 2008.
This change does not affect the Plazes.com site or API.
With the acquisition of Plazes by Nokia now complete the Plazes development team is concentrating its resources building something new within Nokia, and it's very likely that the structure of the Plazes API will change significantly.
As such, the Plazes.net website and the Plazes.net API will cease operation on August 15, 2008.
Hi,
To echo what Andy just said, congrats on the purchase.
I too use Plazes daily, both via the Plazes client and via the API, so I hope
the API and service generally, continues to grow and mature.
My hope would be that the Nokia involvement might result in a Symbian client
that will automatically set my Plaze, as the computer client does. Then it
becomes even more valuable to me as then as it becomes a tool to manage my
"context" via the the API and I can "do stuff" based on where I am.
Doing it manually is all well and good, but the automation of setting my
location appeals. Especially if that identification could be based on GPS, cell
mast or WiFi AP MAC address.
Looking forward to seeing how Nokia's involvement affects Plazes... In hopefully
positive, open ways.
Lance
As I said in my comments on Seesmic and on the blog post -
Congratulations - and it's great that Plazes is "staying in Europe"
too. As one of the longer-term users I still use Plazes every day and
I think it's fantastic that Nokia has identified it as a valuable
service to invest in.
However - I do hope that the community feel and openness of the APIs
remains. Obviously Nokia has an interest from a mobile perspective,
but I hope that all forms of clients and usages will be allowed to
continue... he said, hoping for his 3G iPhone in a few weeks... :^)

Hi,
As we're sure you've heard by now, Plazes has been acquired by Nokia.
More details on the general aspects of the acquisition can be found on
our blog: http://blog.plazes.com/?p=242
This mail is a quick thank you to you, as a developer, for your
continuing interest in the Plazes API and Plazes as a platform. Your
interest contributed significantly to the momentum that made Plazes
into what it is now.
As you can imagine, a lot of things are still being sorted out, and we
don't have anything concrete to report yet about future development of
the Plazes API. However, it's safe to expect Plazes to grow to
exciting new scales, and, of course, to further improve its use cases
for mobile handsets.
We will continue to keep you updated on all further developments
through the Plazes blog and the API mailing list.
All the best from Berlin and Copenhagen,
Tilmann Singer and Peter Rukavina

The Firefox extension itself is a combination of JavaScript and XUL(the "contacts' presences" table is entirely a XUL template, with no JS involved).
The "look up the MAC address to auto-Plaze" is a BASH shell-script. which is why FirePlazer is, for the moment, restricted to Mac OS X and Linux.
On this Google Code page I've started to assembled code snippets for MAC address lookup in various environments; it would be cool if we could develop a cross-platform solution for this task that could be used in FirePlazer, klinkr, and other environments.
Hm, this is written in Javascript, right?
Maybe we (team klinkr) should team up with you, because we also wrote
our client in Javascript. Perhaps we can share some code =)

This is my first stab at Firefox extension development, and I welcome contributions to the project from others; just drop me a line if you're interesting in participating in taking this forward.
Hi!
Last weekend we had a 'weekend of code' with a couple of friends. We
wanted back some of the functionality of the old Plazer and decided to
quit moaning and just build it ourselves (that's where an API is for,
right?)
Of course it took another couple of hours during the following week to
make it into something 'releasable'. But now we're "done", and you
can download the result at http://klinkr.net
I've also written a technical post-mortem on our blog. Hopefully it
will be interesting to some of you how we used the Plazes API. See
