Hello,

I have manage to configure/create my dream pocketmail device. It has 8 megs of
internal memory plus a CF card with 512 megs. It has an on screen keyboard or
the use of palms graffiti or one can use the full size fold out keyboard. It
has an optional CF wifi card that can connect when wifi is available, but is
fully functional as a pocketmail device when there is no wifi.

It has the ability to send and receive text attachments, VCF address and
calendar attachments through pocketmail and word attachments when connected to
the wifi or the dialup modem. It has a text browser (Eudora) that can handle
frames (but not Java). It has a full featured text editor and spell check and
printing in the pocketmail program. It has plenty room many other programs
including a short basic program for configuring sms text messaging *sent through
email.

This is no mystery device, but simply a TRG/pro PDA. This was a device
introduced by Handera some many years ago. It was built around the palm III
with an added CF card for storage and IO peripheral CF cards. It is working as
a perfect pocketmail device for those places I go with student groups ( I am a
campus minister) that has no wifi or has protected wifi, yet allows more
sophisticated internet capabilities when I am able to connect to a wifi or
use the dialup modem.

I would think that for many pocketmail users this would be a great next step
instead of deciding to lug the laptop around and discarding pocketmail. It IS
somewhat more bulky than the dedicated pocketmail devices, but not nearly the
size of a laptop *even with fold out keyboard and backflip (which, BTW, is free
from pocketmail).

For those simply wanting a pocketmail with more memory and full featured address
book capabilities, but not needing wifi, I would recommend picking up a palm
IIIxe. They can be had for around $40. That is also the price I paid for the
TRGpro, though they are harder to find.

One wonders if it would benefit pocketmail if they could get a license from palm
and make a device incorporating these features in a dedicated device and
upgrading the backflip software to handle cell phones .

At any rate I am getting a lot of use out of the device AND having fun reading
the newspaper at my favorite coffee shop.

Bob

Yes the inability to use cell phones is going to be more and more a problem as analog disappears. In thinking about the backflip keep in mind it only works...
