I also have that same issue.
If I can score on a cable and software will I be able to use the device as a
stand alone editer with upload capabilities but without the paid pocket mail
service plan ?

I too have discontinued use of the pocketmail -- but I was an avid fan
of the devise ( I used the flip back on a redesigned palm III which
also had wifi). I was NOT a fan of the service. I discontinued use
by waiting for my credit card to expire and then canceled. I had
heard the stories from the past and it worked out to do it that way.

Wow... the Pocketmail listserv lives again! Imagine my surprise... but, of
course, it was yet another sad message about terrible customer service.

Too bad. This was a great machine in its day. I still have my Composer, upgraded
from the original, and keep wondering if I'll ever activate it again for another
hike through the world's wilderness.

Probably not... as much my fault as Pocketmail's.

R.I.P. old buddy.

Hi Terry, I gave up on Pocket mail about a year ago. It was impossible
to reach them. I tried to stop the automatic charge to my credit card
for each 6 months service and they never would stop it. What finally
got me to quit was my credit card finally expired and that stopped the
payment!!!
I loved Pocket mail about 6 years ago when Internet access around the
world was harder to find. Now it is so prevalent in every small city,
the need for Pocketmail diminished. And I now add pictures to my
travelogs, something that Pocket Mail couldn't do

So I moved on, but I'm with you, it was near impossible to cancel!!!

Good luck.

Opps, I forgot to say hi my name is Nikole ;)

I have no desire at all to start up my pocketmail service again. $20 a
month is just too much, plus I get all my emails on my phone.
I just want to find a way to get what I have on my TM-20 to my
computer and if once I do, if I can edit it and go back an forth with
the information. The TM-20 is a nice little device, I hate to just let
it sit there and rot :(

But, I can't find a cable for it online at all :(

Hi Guy,

This isn't an answer to your question but it is a comment on your
last paragraph (above).

My wife uses pocketmail every day. Within the last month, she has
become increasingly frustrated with the daily 60-100 spams.

Her attempts to obtain assistance from pocketmail have been fruitless
- although their email replies sound like something is being done.

This is particularly annoying to her because my 2nd hand el-cheapo
Apple laptop rarely has more than 2 spams a week. She is about ready
to chuck the pocketmail device.

Food for thought,

Terry

Hi everyone :)

I have a quick question, or maybe it's not so quick, but I hope you
guys can point me in the right direction.

I still have my Sharp TM-20, but I haven't had Pocketmail in a long
time, at least 4 years. I want to back up the old emails from my
handset to the computer. Only I have no clue where the cable or the
disc went. Actually I don't even remember getting a cable. I bought it
semi-used off ebay, I probably didn't realize it was supposed to have a
cable/disc.
Does anyone know where I could get a cable? And then, also, when I
backup the emails to my computer, what format would they be in? Are you
able to edit them or is it just computer language?

I loved using my pocketmail when I had it. I thought it was the best
thing since sliced bread and I would like to find a way to use my
little TM-20 if possible without having to sign back up for pocketmail
{I'm sorry, but it's expensive and I don't even have a phone I think it
will work with}.

Any help would be appreciated! :D

Both WindowsLink and CompanionLink can export PocketMail addresses to Outlook
Express
or any other PC software. WindowsLink is easy if you just want to export once.
CompanionLink is a synchronization system to keep both device and PC up to date
regularly.

You can download the software from the PocketMail website in the support
section.

I am no longer using Pocketmail, but these two well-used devices
still work fine. Both have the usual outside scrapes from carrying
them, but they are clean and functional. Both have been reset, so all
data has to be entered when you power them up. They have with them
the manuals for both and one data cable.

I just want them to be used again, so I am asking $10 to cover US
mailing costs. It would be twice that outside the US -- 20 weak US
dollars, and the payment would have to be in a US dollar instrument,
since our banks charge outrageous fees on foreign currency transactions.

Might be worthwhile for someone who needs a backup device.

Greetings all,

Before I try this on eBay, I thought I would first offer it to the group.

I have a brand-new, never-opened, sealed Composer with 12 Months of service
included. I am offering it for $144 complete!

Here's what you get:

* Brand-new, never-opened, sealed Composer

* 12-months (from activation) Pocketmail service

* Leather carrying case

* Batteries included!

* Priority Mail US shipping (international shipping extra at cost)

$144 is like $12/month for the service and the new composer is free! This
price is good for Paypal payments using bank transfer. For credit cards,
I'll ask for another $5.

First one to pay gets it!

Regards,
Andrew

Randy,

Have you tried going to pocketmail.com and cancelling your credit card? I would
think that
if you can cancel it, say by putting in all 0000's, that would solve the
problem. They'll cancel
your service but that's what you want.

I have been trying for at least a month to turn off the Pocketmail
renewal machine, but the result is comic. They won't cancel unless I
tell them verbally to cancel, but I can't reach customer service, as
others have noted. I held for many many minutes on Tuesday (the
recording says in a cutesy way that they're too busy to answer on
Mondays), then got switched to voice mail, so I left them a voice
mail to cancel, but got another renewal notice today.

The only approach I can think of is to refuse to pay the charge when
it appears on my credit card bill.

Anybody else have other ideas?

Yes the inability to use cell phones is going to be more and more a problem
as analog disappears.

In thinking about the backflip keep in mind it only works with the Palm III
series and the Palm V when used with a connector.

Very interesting reading! Thank you for sharing it with us. I have the
current Palm PDA with Wi-Fi and thought about the backflip, but as you
inferred, it is analog only. PocketMail will have to do something next
year when cellular providers will be allowed to turn analog off. The
only solution has been the Composer, which only works with TDMA digital,
and with GSM and iDEN, which are special cases of TDMA. Despite the
noise about certain providers going to GSM for International
compatibility, US and European GSM providers are inching toward
broadband solutions that are really CDMA. I don't know the reasons why
they can't pass PocketMail modem signals over CDMA, but if they could
have, I'm sure they would have done it. My new CDMA phone can still be
set to analog, only because I hand-picked the model, but next March, my
major provider can legally pull the switch, and I expect they will.
Thank goodness they still have phones in motel rooms, although I stayed
in one where the previous owner had taken them out, but the new owner
was putting them back. Fortunate because the concrete block
construction blocked cellular, and you had to stand outside to make a
call!

internal memory plus a CF card with 512 megs. It has an on screen keyboard or
the use of palms graffiti or one can use the full size fold out keyboard. It
has an optional CF wifi card that can connect when wifi is available, but is
fully functional as a pocketmail device when there is no wifi.

It has the ability to send and receive text attachments, VCF address and
calendar attachments through pocketmail and word attachments when connected to
the wifi or the dialup modem. It has a text browser (Eudora) that can handle
frames (but not Java). It has a full featured text editor and spell check and
printing in the pocketmail program. It has plenty room many other programs
including a short basic program for configuring sms text messaging *sent through
email.

This is no mystery device, but simply a TRG/pro PDA. This was a device
introduced by Handera some many years ago. It was built around the palm III
with an added CF card for storage and IO peripheral CF cards. It is working as
a perfect pocketmail device for those places I go with student groups ( I am a
campus minister) that has no wifi or has protected wifi, yet allows more
sophisticated internet capabilities when I am able to connect to a wifi or
use the dialup modem.

I would think that for many pocketmail users this would be a great next step
instead of deciding to lug the laptop around and discarding pocketmail. It IS
somewhat more bulky than the dedicated pocketmail devices, but not nearly the
size of a laptop *even with fold out keyboard and backflip (which, BTW, is free
from pocketmail).

For those simply wanting a pocketmail with more memory and full featured address
book capabilities, but not needing wifi, I would recommend picking up a palm
IIIxe. They can be had for around $40. That is also the price I paid for the
TRGpro, though they are harder to find.

One wonders if it would benefit pocketmail if they could get a license from palm
and make a device incorporating these features in a dedicated device and
upgrading the backflip software to handle cell phones .

At any rate I am getting a lot of use out of the device AND having fun reading
the newspaper at my favorite coffee shop.

Bob

Go online to http://mail.pocketmail.com and log into cour account. Click on
"Take me to my webmail"and you will see all your messages listed. You can then
click the check box nect to the messages you want to delete and then click on
"delete" at the top or bottom of the page. Do for each page. There may be a
global "clear mailbox"command somewhere on the site, but I don't know where it
is right now.

I use my PocketMail Composer only sporadically, when I travel. The trouble is
that I can build up hundreds of messages. And the Composer then will only send
messages, not receive. When I go to the Clear Mailbox and put in anything, I do
receive a message saying "O messages were removed."

Questions: Is there a maximum number of messages, after which the Clear order
won't work? If so, is there a simple one-step way tto clerar my mailbox from my
desktop PC?

When I signed on I was surprised that it is still going (I had heard of it
many years before). I was glad to find it was because of the places I end
up. I am often the only one among my colleagues (with all sorts of fancy
equipment) to have email when we are in łout of the way˛ places (camp
grounds, some expensive resorts where the wifi is too expensive etc). So I
wondered if that sort of thing is what is keeping it going.

I really hope pocketmail will come out with a unit or device with more memory.
One of those SD cards would do nice and increase the machine's capasity quite a
bit and also it would let me save my information onto the card so when this
device crashs as it has three times this year I don't lose everything.
Three Times I lost quite a bit of important information stored on this device
when it crashed wiping out everything, even my address book. If it was stored on
an external card I could retrive it could'nt I? I would'nt store anything on it
anymore.
Pocketmail has to invest more in development, it has had the composer now for
about four years or more, if it doesen't move forward some other companies
products will take its place....Don't become a dinosour! Grow, expand, renew.

Hello All,

I thought that I would further introduce myself since my first couple of emails
presented a problem rather than were an introduction.

My Name is Bob Hunter and I have been a pocketmail user for 2 years. I have
never used any pocketmail device other than the Backflip. I use the backflip
with a palm IIIe with extended memory (8 megs). I use this arrangement when on
the road traveling as a consultant with a campus ministry organization.

I use pocketmail to stay in touch with family and friends when I am on the road
and occasionally for business purposes. For example this past Sunday I was on
the road and met a student who needed some information. I had that information
in a memo --so I used the automatic append feature of the backflip software to
add that memo to an email and sent it to the student on the spot using a campus
phone.

I have a print program on my palm that integrates with pocketmail. A little p
appears at the top of every email. tapping that p send the email out though the
infrared port to an infrared equipped printer. (for long conferences I take my
small parallel printer equipped with an infrared interface). When in hotels I
sometimes just fax what I need printed to the front desk.

On longer trips I usually also carry my palm modem for when I need to surf the
web. This is a dialup modem and I use it with Eudoraweb. I am seeking to
replace this arrangement with a wifi set up on a recently purchased TRGpro --it
is a modified Palm III with Compact Flash card capability. But I have had some
stability problems with the device so.... we will see.

I am writing this sitting in a coffee shop, using the fold out keyboard. I will
send it using my wifi phone which can send but not receive :-)

I am glad to have found this group. My one questions is "how IS pocketmail
doing. Is it likely to survive?"

Bob

Bob:

PocketMail's assertion that only a special unit (Composer) will work
with a digital phone is based on the probability that the random
interference of the phone's digital sampling will fatally affect the
unsynchronized digital modem signal from ordinary PocketMail. You
apparently have hit it partly lucky with your particular VoIP. If it
won't work 100%, they have no choice but to say it won't work.

Although I rarely use my cell phone for PocketMail, the BackFlip would
be no better than my TM-20 for me. Once the big boys turn off Analog
with FCC permission next year, my CDMA won't work with any PocketMail
device. But I do have a cheap second phone with iDEN that could work
with a Composer.

I had a cellular salesman say that the FCC is MAKING EVERYONE turn off
Analog next March. That was a double fib. The FCC is making them keep
it ON until then to protect customers that bought Analog-only phones
when they were still sold by those carriers. There are rural companies
that have no intention of turning it off, still sell Analog phones, and
their customers like it that way. Lumbermen especially have a yen for
bag phones. Unfortunately, I don't have a list of those areas, but the
Wall Street Journal wrote about it.

The turnover in cellular salesmen is great enough that many now look
blank if you mention Analog! When they get old enough to shave, they
sell used cars instead.

For those familiar with Quartzsite, AZ when it is overrun with us RVers
in January, that was where I first used my PocketMail early in 1999.
There were maybe 6 payphones at 3 locations near the US-95 intersection
on the South side of I-10, and they all had lines of people in the early
evening. I counted maybe 1 out of 7 had PocketMail in their hands, but
the rest were there because cellular was gridlocked and a payphone was
the only way to call home.

But by 2-3 years ago, cellular had been fixed, and the payphones had
largely been removed. There were NONE where I mentioned, and one or two
left at the Shell station on the North side, with no waiting. But that
was better than none. On non-RV trips, the phone in my motel room is
always adequate to send and receive PocketMail.

Les
