This is an summary of the survey. I've included the summary figures and a
"crunched" version of all the comments. My interpretation and how I am going
to change the group is in a separate post. Please make any comments you
like.
I know that a lot of people on podcast-review are already doing, or thinking
about starting, your own projects - so I'm going to publish a lot of the
info, as it may be useful to you and there hasn;t been much published yet.
I'll put a series of postings on the "Podcasting Professional" section of
the website with my more detailed comments. The url is
http://www.herecomespod.org.uk/podcastpro/ . This section has a commenting
mechanism set up. I might even do a podcast <g> - been working too hard for
the last 10 days.
I'm quite happy for anyone to use this information if you acknowledge me and
Podcast-Review it and include a link back to
http://www.herecomespod.org.uk/review/ and the email address
info@... .

* It may be too hard at this point, but if you would ever give it
consideration now is the time. I suggest you take a look at google groups.
The interface is so much cleaner and well organized...in my opinion. 1
* None really; just make sure to get around to reviewing members' podcast,
if they have one, sooner or later 1
* Not really other than maybe have other aspects of podcasting brought in
vicariously... talk about other subjects in an effort to get people to
review those concepts as well. Unfortunately, then you might quickly devlove

* Would like to see more coordinated effort. 1

* Seems to be a narrowly selected list, most already ones listed elsewhere
and getting enough peer review. I would reccomend trying some "not so
popular" if you are truely looking to do review for the sake of the

13 - Other comments (summarised).10 responses.
* Generally, positive comments.
* it's all good; just keep doing what we do.
* More reviews needed - I know this just needs some spark to get it going.
I think the review would be quicker, easier and more efficient (therefore
providing the ability to do more) if we had some type of a standardized form
with a box for open-ended questions.
* During the first round of reviews, I didn't participate after looking at
some of the reviews from other folks. If you have a standardized form
(something similar to this survey, it would make it easier for reviewers to
participate in (and you would have potentially more reviews, similar
responses would be collated and you can potentially have an automated
response fed back to the entire group.
Oooops.
Sorry - that was me doing some changes.
Another podcast and the survey analysis later this evening (now 8pm in
Derbyshire).

Very clear audio. Like the sense of place, can almost taste the coffee at
the White Rock. Had not heard the term "Blogumentary." I like it.
Too much preliminary chatter. When you get into the interview, the
atmosphere sounds good.
Given the departure of Dan Rather thanks to the bloggers, this is a great
subject, also the popularity of documentaries. Although Chuck Olsen
doesn't sound like Michael Moore, thank heavens.
I'm frankly shocked no one's done a documentary on the bloggers. This is
the erfect medium to discuss blogging since podcasting grew out of
blogging. It chronicles the bloggers smugly proclaiming the downfall of
Bush (pre-Dean scream).
It would be great if there were a URL mentioned early in the podcast where
we can find this movie.
I learned a lot about the history of blogging.

The delivery was choppy, making the segment feel too long. The speaker is
clear and articulate enough without artificially pausing. Her delivery is
pleasant and eminently captivating. It's apparent that she cares about
her subject. She warmed up and the delivery became smoother, more
natural, more relaxed, more, in Amy Gahran's words, "conversational."
This makes the topic more accessible. I've learned about the power of
delivery through my voiceover training classes and I would recommend that
podcasters take voice acting or speaking courses.

First chance I've had to do a review in a while. So here goes:
For content I give it an A
For delivery I give it a D
Sorry, had to use school grades for this one :)
The nervousness of a first podcast really comes through. The pauses between
thoughts is really long. This can be fixed in post processing by removing the
gaps in the sound.
There were two things that distracted me while listening. One was an
underlying sound, almost like a heartbeat. The other was what souded like
figiting with the mic.
You have a good voice and I have the feeling you could do much better once you
are over the nervousness.
I have a simple suggestion for you to try. Use a headset mic and have someone
in the room to talk to. Your podcast is like you are giving a presentation to
a group of people. If you record it under that environment it may come off
better.
I'm no expert, just another nervous podcaster.

Hey folks...
My name is Jesse Thorn... I'm a 23 year old guy, a San Francisco
resident and native, and a pod/broadcaster. I've recently started
podcasting my radio program, The Sound of Young America.
The show is a weekly pubradio talker about arts, entertainment, and
particularly comedy. We're most often compared to Fresh Air or Harry
Shearer's Le Show. I think we are more fun than either, though not as
good as the former. Past guests have included Mr. Wizard, Chuck D,
Art Spiegelman, Patton Oswalt, Dame Edna Everage... a lot of folks.
These days I subscribe to feeds from a couple of my favorite public
radio shows, The Treatment (from KCRW) and On the Media (from WNYC),
as well as The Vinyl Podcast and Soul Sides.
Our website is at http://www.splangy.com/radio/ , our feed is
http://feeds.feedburner.com/tsoya . You can also be our friend on
friendster or myspace by looking for the email address
splangy@....
I really welcome the chance to get feedback about my show.
Love,
Jesse Thorn, "America's Radio Sweetheart"
Well, I have read quite a number of reviews already and I did enjoy
the exchange of views from everyone. Although it is impossible to
please everyone and close to impossible to make sure that a podcast
will get high marks from all reviewers, maybe it is a good idea to
post some tips for podcasters. [since I am just a beginner in
podcasting, this will definitely help me a lot]
1. Format -- although each one has his/her own format, there must be
some templates, for a lack of a better word, to follow. For instance,
for a news podcast like mine -- do you think it is a good idea just to
deliver the news and add some personal opinions? What should or should
not be added? I have heard of one podcast that seemed like the author
was reading the news - quite boring, I must say.
2. Ideal Length -- Adam Curry makes it a point to have his show lasts
for around 40 minutes only. Leo Laporte's KFI, otoh, is quite lengthy
(in fairness, though, it is an actual radio show just saved for
podcasting purposes). So, what do you people think?
Looking forward to hearing from you people. :D
I'd like to thank Julian for inviting me to join this group. :)
A bit about myself - My name is Rommel Feria, 30-ish and father of 4.
I just started podcasting a week ago. Have two podcast episodes up and
the format is a bit boring to most. I am still looking for local
content (I want to feature music from Filipino artists as an
intermission) and some intro music of sorts. The podcast is named
PinoyPodcast.
My background is technical. I lead the computer center of a university
in the Philippines and I teach computer science, too. I have no
background in broadcasting but I do make sure that our webcast and
video conferencing sessions are working flawlessly.
Anyway, I have been listening to podcasts for quite sometime now -
Daily Source Code, CatFish Show, MacCast and the new podcast, 2Down. I
listen to podcasts using an iPod Shuffle off of my powerbook. I record
using the powerbook, iVoice II, generic headset and Audio Hijack Pro.
I'll be firing up another post to start a thread for newbies like me. :)
This podcast reminds me of the videotapes on Greek philosophy available
from learning companies.
This is one of the first podcasts that feature other experts and I like it
but I wonder if podcasting is the right medium for it, I guess I'm
influenced by Amy Gahran's ideas on pdocasting not beingthe traditional
top-down discourse. Not that I don't enjoy academic discussions but it
seems to me there are plenty of them out there--but I am pleased that a
woman expert is featured. I also think it's great that the experts refer
to a "friendship" between Greek philosophy and don't define "how we are
different" as Gahran says most academic (read male) discourse does.
I'm learning more about Greek philosophy through this podcast. The audio
quality is spot on.

The sound quality is fair. I think the artist needs to work the mic a
little closer and project more.
There's a lot you can do in 60 seconds. Radio commercials do it all the
time--as a voice actress in training, I know.

Hi, Julian (and everyone else!)!
First of all, thanks for checking out my podcast and for offering a
review here. I have just started experimenting with it and I still
enjoy learning and receiving feedback.
On your comments:

Thanks. I decided to do a shorter "show" for a few reasons. I'm not
sure how I can keep it up, especially if I wish to include other
materials (e.g., interviews, contributions...). But, I'll just have to
wait and see. For now, I'm glad I decided to do my podcast this way.

Exactly my point! =) Well, it's one of my reasons anyway. I already
have a lot of other things to keep up with. And, when I was
brainstorming about my podcast, I was tempted to do a free-flowing one
like everyone else. But I knew I'd struggle to stay with podcasting if
I did. Being a freelancer, I learned to work well with deadlines, so
the one-minute deadline suited me well.

I understand what you mean. I listened to Show #3 again and I did
sound like I was getting drowned. You see, I had to re-do all my
existing shows because I first used commercial pop songs as background
because I didn't think I was going to get that many people listening
just yet. But, I had a few enquiries lately regarding my podcasts
(including an interview with a newspaper journalist), so I decided to
get rid of my commercial music, just to stir clear from copyright
issues. It was a sloppy re-editing job because I was in a rush. So,
after reading your comment, I went back and re-edited once more.
Thanks. I hope NOT to repeat the same audio editing mistake.
> It seemed to cut off abruptly at the end - I think you may have cut
yourself

Well, I did decide to leave it at that because my minute was over. I
considered adding something in the end, but decided against it. Maybe
I should've done. Ah, well... never mind. I'll just try and do a
better ending next time.

As we say here Down Under, "No worries, mate!" =) Really. Comments
(and even helpful criticisms) are fine. It's a different matter if
someone tries to say things in other ways. Then my claws (or fangs?!)
come out. ;-)
Again, thanks.

An interesting concept, and potentially good "bite-sized" conversational
material. You have a lot of different things to say.
The nice thing about doing short podcasts is that it is possible to do them
regularly without too much strain. I could never find the energy to do a
40-45 minute show every day, like some - three minutes once a week I can
manage.
A couple of technical problems:
Your background music is far too loud - to the extent of drowning out what
you are trying to say. Very difficult for anyone without perfect hearing. I
suggest either fading it out after a short intro, or reducing the volume by
about 80% - even at that level of quietness it will still give a degree of
texture.
It seemed to cut off abruptly at the end - I think you may have cut yourself
off before intended (?)
Shai, please take these as comments, not criticisms - we've pretty much all
done one or other of these. If you another podcast in the next day or so.
I'll be pleased to put it on the list again.
Regards
Julian

This one isn't really me.
The podcast is an account of personal memories. Rather too much general talk
at the start about making the podcast.
I think Geek Fu fell foul of the dividing line between being a "many years
ago..." story, and a "current conversation". For me, one or the other would
have worked better. A podcast about an incident in the past (in this case a
ballet production) should have a sense of "other" which was undermined by
complaints about production software (Audacity).
The story was timeless - the topical comments were not.
And I still don't get "Geek Fu". Perhaps that is the aim <g>.

A brief update on this.
The night I listened to the Review of The Conversation, the film itself was
on the BBC. Excellent timing.
How does the man do it?

> Questions:
> How was a the sound quality?
> Was the length acceptable?
A little too prolonged about the technical difficulties and then it just
cut out abruptly, leaving me wanting more.
> Did you enjoy the show format?
Yes, it was conversational like poetry or a short story and felt like a
story told by a close friend, and rich language and details. Almost feels
like a Prairie Home Copmpanion.
> What would you like to see this show do next?
Talk more about women's issues and women's experiences especially women
science fiction and fantasy fans.
> What did you like the most?
The unique voice of the podcaster.
> What did you like the least?
The way it just cut off at the end but I understand it was due to
technical issues.
This is a general comment on podcasters: Would everybody stop commenting
on technical issues? And also would you not say "uh" and "um"? If you're
not sure what to say, you can pause the podcast, edit, etc. Just my pet
peeves
