It takes the microdrives which can go up to I believe 10gig, which should
give you quite a bit or storage space, no matter what format you record. Of
course a microdrive at that size is going to cost almost as much as the unit
itself.

Sorry about that. For some reason my response disappeared. I got a
funny message from Yahoo when I sent it. Oh, well...Here's what I
said:

If you are interested in a portable solid state recorder you might
also want to look at the Roland R-1 -- about the same price as the M-
audio device.

There is an R-1 Email list on Yahoo and there has been some
discussion about how the R-1 compares with the M-audio MicroTrack.

I would definitely recommend it if you're into spending that much cash
and want that kind of quality. It records to PCM format, 16 bit, 44.1K
right up to 24 bit, 96K. It comes with a built in CD burner, balanced
analog XLR ins and outs, unbalanced RCA ins and outs, as well as digital
AES/EBU and S/PDIF ins and outs.

I forget exactly how big the hard drive is that it comes with, but at
16-bit/44.1, it can record 53 hours of program material.

The on-board editing features are powerful, but have to be accessed
through the fluorescent display on the front panel. I have a friend who
records, edits, compresses, and finalizes his mixes on this thing and
then burns a finished Red Book CD. They sound fine, but he's spent a
lot of time learning the editing tricks.

I prefer editing in a DAW, but if you don't have any software to do
that [and since Audacity is free, you have no excuses :-) ] this will
work fine.

A 2gb card costs about $220.00. A bit of an
investment.

At a rate of 16.5 gigs per minute, 24/96 will get you
121 minutes. More than enough for the average
podcaster if you record at it's highest quality. But
again, a pretty big investment for some.

The drawback with the alesis unit is that it is very
large compared to the M-Audio unit. It is also not
battery powered and needs an external preamp for mics.
If you get a battery powered stereo mic, you can plug
it straight into the M-Audio and hit record.

From what I've seen, many Podcasts and Podcasters need to mix some
other sound source into their Podcast in real time, anyway. This
requires some sort of small mixer, and those will likely come with a few
channels of mic-pre.

For someone who just wants to hang a mic and record, it's true that
the Masterlink is not the way to go.

Don't get me wrong. I think it is one of the best
products at it's price. The only issue I see is size
when it comes to podcasters.

Size does matter;)

Well, finally got off my duff, and got this mRSS stuff working.

-- I use an OLYMPUS VN-240PC to record telephone interviews from my
speaker phone attached to my VONAGE account, the transfer the file to
my computer with the digital recorder's USB connection cord.

-- I use ACOUSTICA to record my own voice for intro and voice overs
which are saved in .wav file format.

-- I use MIXCRAFT to add in bumper music to segway between
interviews. While I mix the final product down to .mp3 format in
128kps and a typical 1 hour show is about 100mb.

-- I crunch the 128kps down to 16kps using MUSIC MATCH so the
resulting .mp3 file is only 10mb. If I use anything else, the "S"
sounds are accentuated artificially. MIXCRAFT can crunch down to
16kps but the quality isn't as good as the job MUSIC MATCH can do.

-- I registered with OURMEDIA.ORG and ARCHIVES.ORG and use that free
storage and bandwidth, which was the major road block to insternet
radio streaming.

MY LISTENERS TUNE IN by
-- clicking manually on the show page, a listing of which appears at:
www.DearMYRTLE.com/listen.htm

I PREFER iTUNES since it is a FAST download. Then one merely clicks
ADVANCED and SUBSCRIBE TO PODCAST and then copy/paste the following
mRSS: http://www.ourmedia.org/mediarss/user/33644

AS you can see I've got 5 one-hour shows under my belt. This is a TON
easier than doing live internet radio streaming, and totally
affordable with the OURMEDIA.ORG/ARCHIVES.ORG component for mRSS
delivery. (I missed 2 weeks, because of the death of my sister's
husband. NOTHING else can keep me away from doing this.) I schedule
my 2-3 guests each week about 2-3 weeks in advance, although I have
an Excel worksheet worked out through mid March 2006.

I've found that the best is recording off of a land line speaker
phone. It took me a while to find the best sounding speaker phone.
Each telephone call is a different digital quality. Cell phones and
wireless phones are simply terrible. YES, I have SKYPE, and SKYPEOUT
but cannot figure out how to record both side of the conversation
without setting up 2 recorders. The slightly lower quality of the
regular telephone calls is tolerable, and sounds like many land-based
radio station call-in shows.)

I'm also toying with the idea of recording a few of my better
genealogy columns. There is a contingent of sight-impaired
genealogists out there. Someone would have to setup the the intitial
podcast for most of them, but this is a go.

Now there are 2 more podcasts for genealogy out there. I think this
is necessary (not competition) for bringing this media into the
mainstream for communication among genealogists.

It has been awhile, but I have posted more educational
info on my blog at

Three articles have been put up today:

1.Predicting Speech to Background Noise Ratio

2.The myth of microphone reach

3.Impedence matching for microphones:Is it necessary?

They are a little more technical than the others, so
for some of you with little audio experience, some of
it may go over your head.

Paul -

Thanks for the link, I don't think that they are too technical for
people (I also appreciate the other articles available).

I am just wondering how best to measure the noise level. My recorder
has indicator lights, but I don't really think that they are much more
than just that - indicators.

One of the solutions not mentioned would be (if possible) to move away
from the noise. In my current show I interview a group - to get away
from the noise we had to walk a block up the road and duck down an
alley, and there was still competition from the noise (I started the
recording as we were walking down the road - this was not included on
the show - and when we entered the alley the noise level visually
changed as seen by Audacity). So in a more normal context, if the
microphone can be moved from the noise source (say, a noisy computer
fan) then that will help.

Cheers -

george

Eventually, I'll have EVERYONE's feed clean. :)

<channel> issue:

    <itunes:subtitle /> - Bad code. <itunes:subtitle>This is my
subtitle</itunes:subtitle> is good code.

Other than that, the code looks fairly clean to me. I'd give the broken
chain image a week or so. My feeds went through something similar before
they fixed themselves.

I got this in my inbox today, has anyone else gotten one? Anyone know
where they might be featuring it? I didn't know Yahoo featured
podcasts anywhere, honestly.

"To whom it may concern,

We wanted to give you a heads up and give you the opportunity to opt

Once up, our expectation that our customers will have easy access to

No built-in mics, though. Interesting.

Now that I've invested in Shure EM-58 mics with XLR plugs, I'm
wondering what the best mobile recording rig for me would be. A
Marantz (that has XLR jacks)? Something like this with a Griffin
XLR-to-1/8" adapter/cable? Or, since the Shure's are so heavy, just
stick with the little two-headed 1/8" mic my Olympus voice recorder
came with... and I guess my Olympus voice recorder. <g>

Looks like the MicroTrack has 1/4" balanced inputs. You'll need

Good point. Avoiding noise is always a better course
of action, but sometimes it is not always possible.
Which is why I posted that article. Many podcasters do
"on location" recordings, and they cannot control
certain surrounding factors.

A good way of measuring the competing noise is to use
a simple sound level meter.

You then apply what was instructed in the article.

I am looking for a Linux user to write an article
about podcasting exclusively on Linux. I myself will
soon be trying it out, but I would like to get a more
experienced user to write about it. Any takers?

Thanks,
