I've heard a lot of good stories about the parties and people getting drunk, so
it sounds like a good time. However, I have yet to hear any comments on the
sessions, which is where my interest would be, which is why I think I may try
to get to Podcamp in Pittsburgh.

Were any of the educational portions of the event worthwhile?

Cheers -

Much more than just people getting drunk (you can do that at home.)
This was an occassion for people who have been collegues to meet
face-to-face for the first time. Relationships were strengthened,
partnerships instigated, networks woven... and friendships forged.

Most of the sessions seemed geared toward beginning podcasters,
monetization, SEO, and the like. I didn't pay to attend the
sessions... someone who did, step forward and tell us your
impressions, please!

If you were brand new at it, I would have suggested _Podcasting For
Dummies_. Since you've been podcasting for quite a while, however,
you'd probably learn more from _Tricks of the Podcasting Masters_, by
Rob Walch and Mur Lafferty. It's intended for people who know the
technical basics and want to learn more about content and marketing.

If you're looking for a second book, _Podcast Solutions_ by Dan Klass
and Michael Geoghegan is also very well-written and goes into some
depth about the "softer" subjects.

Best of luck with your podcast! And please keep posting about how
podcasting is going in Hungary and central Europe. Many of us in the
U.S. (and I include myself here) often make the mistake of thinking
that what's going on here is *all* of podcasting, and forget that it's
a worldwide movement. I'd love to hear more people's experiences from
other parts of the world.

Anyone have the low down on the best web server hosts for maximum
storage and high traffic at the most competitive rates?
I'm currently paying $10 for 1gig storage and 20 gig traffic per month.
For each gig additional storage I only get 5 gig of traffic increase,
but for $10 additional per gig transfer. In some cases I've had to go
with 7gig ($70/mnth) of storage to get 50gig of transfer due to traffic
limits for the month.
Obviously, streaming is cheaper, but I prefer static if I can afford
it. Any suggestions?

Most podcasters use a service like Libsyn, to actually host the podcast.
I pay $5 a month for 100 megs of new material a month, no max storage
and unlimited bandwidth.

I use a normal web hosting company for the show notes

Ensure that you have the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) installed first.

The Radio Adventures of Doctor Floyd LIVE! show from this year's Expo is
already online, both at their site (http://doctorfloyd.com) and the LA
Podcasters (http://lapodcasters.com)

My live edition of Career Opportunities is "in the can" and will be released
as my Wednesday show this week.

Technorama from http://chuckchat.com released their LIVE show Friday night
almost immediately after recording at the Sheraton in Ontario.

I am sure there are many, many more coming, or already released, though.

podcasters group:

Leo Laporte just started using the term netcast for all of his podcasts.
Apparently this move is to distance podcasts from Apple's Ipod etc..
Like many of you, my podcast LAwithKids I still call a podcast.
Should we support Leo in his switch to netcast?

o No Way, I have too much time and energy invest in the word podcast.
o Yes.... he is a trendsetter and I will follow
o I will change to netcast only if other podcasters do so first

I didn't pay either, but it was pretty easy to sneak into them....We
just acted like we were supposed to be there and walked into a few of

I am pretty disappointed to see this. Tim and his company TNC Media spend a
great deal of money to put on the show. Then to hear that people were
sneaking into the sessions without having paid is an insult to the work Tim
and his Team did. I was a speaker but guess what I had paid for a full
conference ticket.

I love the Audio2U podcast, but I've had some problems with listening to the
podcast. Every few episodes, I hit a glitch in the program that causes my
iRiver 895 to reset. It's consistant in each podcasts, and this is the only
podcast I've had this happen on. One of his most recent podcasts did this
and it was driving me nuts! I really wanted to hear how he finished
remixing the promo.

Anyone else experienced this with Audiow2u or with the iRiver?

Poolside? In the water? I think you're confusing Evo with Tee.

I'll echo the comments about freeloading. Bad karma...

I don't know what sessions you attended, but the vast majority that I
attended were filled with tons of great advice, practical tips, and
other great ways to make my podcasts better. Certainly not much "wave
of the future mumbo jumbo" (unfortunately a couple of the keynotes
veered into this territory, however).

Highlights for me were Dave Jackson, Craig Schoemaker, and Jason Van
Orden (I didn't attend Doug Kaye's but saw this at Podcast Academy 3
it was great). I'm looking forward to hearing the audio of some of
the panel discussions that I missed because there were too many great
topics to be in two places at once!

Hey guys,

A few of you will be happy (and some of you may gnash your teeth) to
know that I've resumed posting to my Podcast Pedant blog:
http://www.podcastpedant.com

The text below was what I just posted about my experience at PME. I
do *not* intend to make a habit of cross-posting from my blog to this
mailing list, but since everyone's already talking about the Expo here
I thought it'd be okay this one time. The ((double paren)) markup
indicates footnotes; the formatting for this will look a lot better if
you read it on the blog.

* * * * * * * * * *

So I just got back from the 2006 Podcast and Portable Media Expo.

I made it a priority to go this year because, frankly, all of the talk
about it last year made me jealous. It sounded like I'd missed _the_
podcasting event of the year -- and in 2005, I probably did. There
was no PodcasterCon, no PodCamp, and very little at Dragon*Con. This
year? It wasn't the only game in town, but I think it was very much
worth the expense to go from a business perspective, and it was a hell
of a lot of fun.

I went partly to get some business done, and mostly to meet people.
I'd call the business part about a 60% success -- I'm not going to
talk about everything I've been involved with, but I had a few
important conversations and missed a few others because everyone was
busy. No big deal; that's what e-mail and Skype are about. The
biggest accomplishment was the energy behind the Podcast Guild; we
got some new gears turning, and it looks like it's finally on its way
to becoming what it needs to be. ((That "industry consortium" Leo
mentioned in his keynote speech? He was talking about the Guild. I'd
mentioned it to him the night before.)) More later on that.

The people, though -- that was hugely successful. I met most of the
people I was hoping to meet, and many more. And it bears out an
observation I've made from other events: despite our personas online
or behind the mic, _in person_ we're a big circle of friends. I
didn't shake a single hand that wasn't warm and welcoming. In some
cases this surprised me: as much of a smartass as I am much of the
time, I expected at least a few cold shoulders or even harsh words,
but there were none the entire weekend. Everyone was cool. It was a
great vibe.

Was it a deep learning experience? Not to me, though I confess I'm an
unfair judge. I don't know everything, but I know quite a bit already
of what was being presented. However, the few program events I sat in
on were more slick, corporate-vanilla, and "on the surface" than deep
examinations of the issues. I'd even include Evo's and my own
presentation in that. I felt better about the panels at PodcasterCon
last year, where there was less speechifying and more intimacy between
the moderators and the audience.  That's not to say this was a dud;
there were some good messages here. I'm just not sure from my own
perspective that a session pass would've been worth the money, if I
hadn't had a free pass already as a speaker.

The exhibit hall was much the same: a fun place, but little depth and
few surprises. Podcast Ready put on a great face as the primary
sponsor, ((I don't just say that because I work for them.)) and the
Podango mini-conference ((They called it an "unconference," but
they're wrong by all usual definitions.)) seems to have been a hit.
Most of the rest of it was what you'd expect: here's Shure and
M-Audio, there's LibSyn, over there's PopCurrent, yonder are a few
podcast producers, etc. There were only two gadgets that threw me for
a loop:

* Box Populi's "Podcast in a Box," a Linux-based recorder that
delivers true, no-kidding, automatic podcasting with _zero_ interface.
Aimed right now at the university market under the Meedu brand, you
don't even have to push a button: your tech guy either schedules a
start and stop time for your lecture and it begins and ends recording
(and publishes to their Web host) with no intervention, or you pop in
a USB flash key which triggers the recording, and it publishes when
you take it out. I have never seen a podcast process with no grunt
work before. I think it's brilliant.

* The iMorphosis "PodcastLink," a sort of hardware-based podcatcher
that will plug directly into your MP3 player (including iPods) and
populate it without a computer. ((Except it's configured from their
Web site. For which you need a computer.)) This reminds me of those
old $100 e-mail and Web appliances -- the ones they marketed to your
grandparents. Like those, it will fail, because it's a clever
solution lacking a problem. Anyone who has the knowledge and desire
to listen to a podcast is going to have a computer sitting around.
Under what circumstances is it worth real money to avoid plugging your
MP3 player into your computer?

What mattered far more than new gizmos was just listening in for the
general tone of the Expo. Leo's keynote, about getting down to
business and protecting what we do as a brand and an industry, pretty
much set that tone, and I felt it throughout most of the presentations
and a lot of the conversations. You had plenty about podcasting for
fun, sure, but underneath it, everyone was really focused on
_success_. There was a drive throughout the whole thing. A hunger.
I cannot tell you how many times and in how many ways I heard the word
"metrics" used, during the day and late into the drunken night. I
can't really criticize -- I was saying the same lines as everyone
else.

Is attending the Expo important? That's a complex question. It's
_fun_ to attend regardless of its importance. I'd say it's
_moderately_ important to attend if you're treating your podcast as a
business; and it's _critical_ to attend if you intend to stake a claim
in podcasting beyond your own podcast. Events like this are, in a
very real way, the conversation that podcasting has with itself. The
sharpest observation I had was that the conversation was entirely
about the people and companies who were _there_. People talked about
Podcast Ready. People talked about SwitchPod. People talked about
Blubrry and Podcast Pickle, both of whom had successful and fun party
suites.

Apple was discussed very little except in regard to the recent fracas
with Podcast Ready. And I barely heard Podshow mentioned at all.
Even the Podshow podcasters who attended weren't talking about
Podshow. The ridiculous Hummer limo, running guests to their
anti-conference or whatever it was, only got rolled eyes. I'm pretty
sure they have no idea how much it's hurting them to detach themselves
from podcasting's conversation. They weren't there, so they weren't
on the radar. And a company that survives on the creativity of
individuals can't afford that.

Besides, they're missing the fun.

I didn't miss the fun. I had lots of it. All businesses, priorities,
and importances aside, I'll be going again next year.

And I hope to see you there.

The core of The Levelator is written in C++ for performance reasons.
We've used Java only for the UI. It allowed us to get it done quickly
so that we could use the same codebase for Windows, OS X (Intel) and
OS X (PowerPC). We didn't get it done until 12:30am on Saturday, and
if we hadn't used Java, I doubt we could have delivered a multi-
platform version while still at the PME. As it is, we were a day
late. Yes, there are other cross-platform solutions, but this is the
best we could do with the skills and tools we had.

In a future version, I want to recode the UI using native tools,
making it much easier to install, particularly on Windows.

That said, on the Mac, it was a fairly easy install. Not, perhaps, for
newbies, but it did install cleanly and works. I ran my Expo LIVE show
through it and it did improve the sound quality markedly.

I listened. If what you claim to have observed was genuine -- if
*all* you saw were "40 year old male virgins typing alone in the
blogging room" -- then I'm sorry you missed all the fun. It sounds
like you didn't check out the hotel bar, you didn't run across the
poker games, and you didn't wander by the Libsyn party to hear DJ
Steveboy's dance mixes or see the Wingin' It Live recording with naked
bodypainting.

Your loss. I assure you, though, the people who put having fun ahead
of judging other people found everything they were looking for.
