Just a thought.

It's bad enough being homeless (been there, done that, got the t-shirt) without
having to describe your condition as a descent into "homelessnessness" No wonder
some people have trouble getting out of it when they can't even pronounce it....

Cheers

Thanks! Sort of an odds and ends cast. Posted here more for the
podcaster interviews, I actually haven't listened to my homeless
interview part ever. Just trimmed the in and out points, spot checked
a few parts and stuck it in there.

I'm working toward the day when I have to edit audio deaf at age 103.
Will do it by eye. But by then, robot slaves will be cheap and
  plentiful anyway.

My thing was actually just a part of the audio of a 90-minute
interview I did for that guy's movie. Whenever I do interviews I only
do them if I retain rights to also record or film for my own stuff.
  That's a right worth getting.

He interviewed me because my podcast has the word "homeless" in the
name. I don't think he expected me to be so "people should pull
themselves up by their bootstraps" in my replies. I honestly doubt any
of it will make it into the film.

Also went through all old backup discs and shredded about 20 discs I

Yeah, once I get the episode I am hammering on now for NYE, I will be
backing up all my show notes, audio, and RSS files, as well as making
a blog export back up. I hope my 4 remaining DVDs will be enough, and
early 2008 will be the photo backup session. *crosses fingers*

Nope - you didn't. (Which is a shame)

It just stuck me that it was a very silly word. So I looked it up and it

You'll have to forgive me. I've a twisted way of looking at the world.

I would second the BluBrry Stats. Very simple to setup on the Podcaster end,
and seems to be accurate to what PodPress is reporting.

Libsyn's stats are down now as well after working really well for a couple
of days there (as a change). You can't even see the spinning icon anymore.
NOTHING shows up.

Rumor has it that Libsyn is doing an overhaul but it can't happen too
quickly for my taste. Oh well, I'm too addicted to looking at my stats
anyway. They just depress me. Having the stats service down is good for my
self esteem.

If someone's looking for a way to make a little money and help people,
here's an idea:

Start a service where, for five or ten dollars a year, you will call
people's K7 number once a month to make sure it stays working. You'd
have to have unlimited long distance to make it work if you didn't
live in Seattle, but that's not so much. I have it, it's about 50
bucks a month.

Subject: Re: Re: New Website Lets You Create Podcasts From A Webpage

Steve has valid points here, Joe, and maybe I don't. I see it as useful
in special cases, on-the-fly remotes where ones usual tools aren't
available, but I don't see it as a day-to-day mechanism for creating final-
form podcasts. The initial voice recording, speech only, is just a start.

There is one sort of podcast where I can see a use for something like
this, maybe. "Five Minute Memoir," for example, is generally an audio
recording of one story by one person who, well, has one brief story to
share, but no plans to do an ongoing podcast, kinda like a very long voice-
comment.

I still think this might be a starting point for a voice-comment
mechanism, though. Wish I could remember that one site that promised a
semi-turnkey voice commenting system. Don't recall the name, and when I
stumbled across it it wasn't up and running yet -- don't know if they ever
finished it, for that matter. Anyway, I can see a use for having a widget
on my Libsyn site that can record voice comments but host them elsewhere --
don't want to tie up part of my show-hosting space with voice comment
files.

Now there's an idea, promoting-wise. Do a blog on a near-and-dear topic.
have a link for voice comments there on the blogsite, that goes back to
your voice-recording system. With enough voice comments, assemble them,
and your responses, into a podcast. It's a start, if you have an
attractive topic you can do well.

Likewise, such a voice-comment mechanism might be useful for shows (like
mine) that have tried the K7 phone numbers but never got called. Might
have a better response level if it's all web-based, since it wouldn't
involve long-distance and/or international calls. And the audio quality
might well be higher with such a mechanism than with a phone voicemail, or
with Skype & Talkshoe & such.

If you're really satisfied you can cope with the hosting duties for
(potentially) so many files, generate a personalized link for each show
that records their show's comments into their own FTP-accessible folders.
Even a show with lots of comments can just FTP in and grab their stack of
MP3s en masse. If used, it could get massive in a hurry, though.

I admit, I don't know much more about Java than that it's a bad idea to
put in cream and sugar. But I believe the script runs on the client
computer, right? So in this context, a script that allows the selection
(from a pull-down list?) of the 'cast to whom the comment is directed
would be handy...

Hey, waitaminute. Script generates the MP3, saves it on your site, person
who recorded it provides an email address, and your system emails a link
to the file to that address. Or attaches the file itself, if practicable.
You've already got the recording and hosting part done, how hard is
generating an email with a link to a file in it? The email address could
be provided automagically by clicking an icon on the show's site -- the
comment address is already pretty public, anyway -- calling the script
with the email address as a parameter.

Make that work, I'd sure try it out.

It was 29 Dec 2007, when Stephen Eley commented:

Anyway, here's my query:

Miss Peter,

Hey sir,

I set up the gMail thing on one of my non-mission critical domains to
test it. Configured the MX records on DreamHost (my domain's registrar.)

Uploaded the attention file as per gMail, domain was authenticated.

I waited a while, then once gMail said it was confirmed, I tried
sending to and from their web mail interface.....could send from it,
but not to it. When I sent through it from my other e-mail, it
bounced. Said "relaying not allowed."

Any ideas on what to fix?

Also, once I get it up and running, do you have any idea where to find
the POP (or IMAP) and SMTP info to enter into my Eudora?

Thank you muchly. Snappy new year!

MWD:

I didn't use the MX Relay method for GMail spam filtering. I'm doing
something a little stranger, but more flexible.

Since DreamHost offers "unlimited email addresses", I have multiple
addresses that get mapped to my gmail account. Those are setup as
"forwarding only" addresses, pointing to my GMail address.

My GMail account is configured to forward to an actual mailbox address
at DreamHost. That's the account I check from WebMail, Thunderbird and
my Sidekick II.

So when you send mail to feedback@... (or comments@,
hatemail@, wtc@, ...) it gets forwarded to whatthecast@...,
filtered and forwarded to fakeaddress@... for "final"
delivery.

Same basic idea without the MX record wackiness.

Not sure on this one. A wild guess would be DNS caching your old MX
record? I remember not being able to get mail from outside addresses
for a few hours but I was able to get mail from my wife's gmail
account right away. Do you have an email address that I can send mail
to in order to test?

First make sure that POP is enabled on your account and then follow

The easiest thing you could do would be to get a free video hosting account
at Blip.tv, upload your files and turn on the option to share the files to
iTunes, which will get your files listed in the iTunes videoblogs.

Hello,
I've got a relatively young podcast (11 episodes and counting) in a
competitive, crowded space (foreign language instruction). But upon
closer inspection it's clear that many of the podcasts in my category
are on a permanent hiatus. There are some that only podcast two or
three episodes and were never heard from again and others that started
out strong but haven't posted new episodes since 2005. As of tomorrow,
that means 3 years without a new episode!! A few of these podcasts
appear to have decent page rankings because they show up on the first
page of Google searches even though their podcast and podcast blog
haven't been updated in more than 2 years. What gives?

My question is at what point is a podcast considered podfaded? And why
doesn't iTunes and the other podcasting directories clean those
podcasts out of their directory? Is it because it is free content? How
do you guys feel about podfaded podcasts cluttering podcast
directories? Do you think there should be a time frame imposed (if no
new episode is posted in the past 12 months you get deleted from the
directory)? Or should we consider iTunes and the other podcast sites
as digital libraries housing any and all podcasts for future generations?

Your thoughts?

P.S. Happy 2008!! :)

There's very little incentive for iTunes or other directories to take
content out of their listings. But take heart -- as your podcast gets
more established, with more links and subscrptions, you'll soon get
ahead of the fossils in the podcast listings and Google. Just keep
doing what you're doing, and do it well, and the right rewards will
come to you. And Have Fun.

I realize this discussion probably has gone on before, but would
there be benefit in a directory who "cleaned house" say "you haven't
released an episode in 24 months, should we mark you as podfaded and
remove you/put you on the podfaded list"

24 months seems to me to be WAY too long!

I think that there are two categories of older podcasts.

Something like the companion podcast to "Podcasting for Dummies" only
had a short run (22 eps?) but it is for a specific purpose but is
still relevant and Tee himself definately hasn't podfaded!

Maybe podfading should be about the podcaster than the show? You can
stay with the same show/format or change or fade.

Then I think you have a show that is regular and then all of a sudden
with no explanation stop doing shows.

Do podcasters or shows "jump the shark" too?

What difference does it make? Yes, those shows are podfaded, but is that a
reason for folks not to listen to the content that is (was) there? If the
shows are still on-line and they have valuable (entertainment and/or
instructional) content . then why not leave the accessable?

I'm in the process of starting a podcast and am thinking about getting
one of those Giant Squid Audio stereo lavailers for doing interviews
on the street and such. I've heard great things about this mic and
I've heard the demos on the GSA website, but I'm wondering if anyone
uses this mic themselves or knows of a podcast that does? It'd be
great to hear it in real-world use.

The mic I'm looking at is here:
http://www.giant-squid-audio-lab.com/gs/gs-podcast_stereo.html

About my main mic: I have a dynamic handheld mic that I bought a few
years ago (a Shure PG something-or-other) that I was thinking of
using. I'm sure it would be fine. But I've heard that condenser mics
sound 10 times better, so I'm thinking about picking up an inexpensive
model. Is anyone using either of the cheap Marshalls--either the 990
or the V57M?
