Thanks, Andy. The problem with going to the main site
(danhughes.libsyn.com) is that I house two completely different podcasts
there, and by splitting them into /rss/treasure and /rss/softball, fans
of one don't see the other.

The libsyn tech staff checked it out, and they told me that the browser I
was using when I had the problem could not read the rss material, so
simply showed what it saw rather than what it was supposed to interpret.

The browser in question is the version of "Explorer lite" that comes with
the Juno email program.

Bottom line is that the only people who will have problems with the URL
are those who use the Juno internet connection.

I'll write Juno and see if they can do a fix at their end.

Thanks,

---Dan

Hi Dan,

That URL is really only meaning full to podcatchers or RSS readers.
It's the actual feed that contains the information about your podcast
that isn't really intended for human eyes.

You should be visiting the http://danhughes.libsyn.com/ to access
your podcast site.

Good luck and congrats for getting started!

I've suddenly received several of these, from different individuals. Went
to the "Grouply" page, but did nothing with it, primarily because I didn't
wish to sign up for another service.
Now that you've suggested that it is a device to steal id's and passwords,
I'm glad I left the page.
Thanks for the heads up!!

I don't know if anybody's tried stuff above and beyond meetups, but
I'm taking a swing at a "con" built around maximumfun.org and my
various podcasts (The Sound of Young America, Jordan Jesse Go!, etc).
  It's called MaxFunCon - http://www.maxfuncon.com . I thought I'd
share some of my experiences.

My intern and I looked at some university and conference center type
sites here in Los Angeles, but were really dissapointed with what we
found -- it was all really expensive and, frankly, lame. I happened
upon a link to this conference center owned by UCLA that's about two
hours east of LA, in the mountains. That totally changed my ideas of
what the conference could be. We went from a traditional
panels-and-conference-floor type of situation to something that was
kind of like a theme cruise or something.

Anyway, what I ended up with was a weekend-long event with an
all-inclusive price. We've got two comedy shows -- one comedy music
(Hard & Phirm and Jonathan Coulton), and one standup (Jimmy Pardo, Tig
Notaro, Maria Bamford, Chris Hardwick). We're taping a couple of
podcasts (Jordan, Jesse Go, You Look Nice Today, Never Not Funny), and
we're running a variety of seminars. Oh, and a couple speakers - John
Hodgman and Merlin Mann. All of these are folks I know from real
life, or through my shows.

I'm just about to the 50 paid attendees I need to break even, and I'll
make a bit of money if we get to the 100 person limit. Since my show
is mostly listener-supported, my real goal here is to connect more
deeply with people, and give them a really special experience that's
reflective of what maximumfun.org is about. I see it as kind of like
a funny TED.

Anyway, thought people might be interested in the idea.

More than likely General. It is impossible to cover all of the
categories. To do so it would cost a lot more to hold the awards due to
trophy purchases. Key is to tell your audience what category to nominate
you in..

Ok folks, it's been a few months but the Enlighten Up Podcast is back.
I'm changing to a different hosting provider(see ya godaddy), am
moving all the stuff around and got the first new episode up last
night. This brings me to my problem. It doesn't seem to show up on
iTunes. I am not normally an iTunes user, but since the majority of my
traffic for the podcast comes from there, I re-downloaded the software
and went to check out the entry. All appears fine except the new show
isn't there. So I thought I would go check and make sure they still
have a correct feed address and make sure it didn't go into some sort
of hibernate mode, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to do
any management as the producer of the show. It seems I can look at the
subscribe page just like everyone else but I can't figure out how to
get any deeper.

Could someone clue me in on what I'm forgetting/missing?

Did you change the feed URL, Lans? Are you using WordPress/podPress? If
you are, you can tell podPress to ping iTunes. Also keep in mind that it
can take up to 24 hours for some changes (even new shows) appear in the
iTunes Music Store. And even if it does take that long, it shouldn't stop
your subscribers from getting your new episode, as long as they're
subscribed to the correct feed address.

I agree. your new episode will probably show up about a day after you upload it
unless you ping it.

Is there any quick and efficient way to upload a large mp3 file?

It seems that a 2-hour file takes much longer than eight 15-minute recordings.
I lowered the quality and rate of the recording, but it is still 27mb.
How do you upload these big files?
(I know that I could split this into parts, but that would be a last resort.)

Thanks for your suggestions.

Upload where? To Libsyn, or some other hosting provider? Are you
using their Web interface or are uploading with an FTP program? What
sort of broadband connection do you have -- cable modem, DSL, etc.?
How long is it actually taking you?

General tips:

* If you don't know what FTP is, learn about it. Find out your
hosting provider's FTP address and use that instead of Web interfaces.
You'll need a good client program to access it. For Windows, WinSCP
and FileZilla are free. On the Mac I'm partial to Cyberduck. If they
offer SFTP that's even better and more reliable. (And every modern
FTP client does both.)

* If you're using entry-level DSL, it may be time to consider
upgrading to a faster plan or switching to cable modem if it's
available. You can Google on these two broadband technologies and
their differences.

* If you're still using dial-up over a modem, stop. Get broadband.
Dial-up and podcasting aren't highly compatible, for exactly the
reasons that are frustrating you. Broadband in the United States is
getting cheaper all the time -- and once you have it, you'll wonder
how you ever put up with using the Internet without it.

Steve,

I upload to my own site and  use cable.
Since nothing was working, I decided to put the file on a jump drive
and try uploading on another faster computer. That did the trick and it uploaded
in just a few minutes.
Just proof that I really need to replace the ancient desktop that I am using.

I'm no expert but I think I can shed some light on the matter:
Podcast survices use a form of compression to support our dial up listeners. At
least, that's what the survice I use (gcast) does.

I waited and nothing ever showed up so I began back tracking. I
checked the feed address in feedburner, which seemed to be right so I
ran it through a validator. For some reason that I'm sure is
completely obvious but I am overlooking, the feeds are sending web
pages (html headers...frame displays...the whole 9 yards). I used the
feed 'http://enlighten-up.org/?feed=rss2&cat=21' which renders
beautifully in a browser window but makes the validator puke. I tried
changing it to an atom feed and got the same problem: pretty web page
but no valid feed.

What have I missed here?

Thanx for the help folks!

I, for one, have no idea what you mean by "audio search-engine for your
podcast"

Something that finds audio you can include in your podcast?

Something that finds audio you have included in a previous podcast?

Or ???

We've had more and more interest lately from radio stations who'd like to
syndicate The Radio
Adventures Of Dr. Floyd on their stations (two requests alone this week). We're
signed up
through PRX.org and we've had a very small amount of people go through there.
Most of
these requests are from Public Stations or College Shows who don't have any sort
of budget
to pay for the syndication.

We really like the idea of just letting them broadcast the shows for free, as
it's publicity and
helps spread the word. However we'd like to come up with some sort of
'agreement' form
that they'd fill out and and then send to us before we allow them to braodcast
our show. The
agreement would, among other things, have them agree that they cannot edit the
shows in
anyway and if we ever were able to secure real life 'syndication' they
understand they MAY not
be able to broadcast our shows anymore.

Any thoughts on where could get something like that drawn up for a relatively
low amount of
cash short of a lawyer? And if a lawyer's the only place what type?
Entertainment lawyer?

Thanks!

I bought copy of Business and Legal Forms for photographers by Tad Crawford (I
got mine thru B&H Photo on line). It comes with a book and the forms on CD.
The Property release form would probably work with just a little tweaking.

There's also a book called _Getting Permission_ from Nolo Press that
has a lot of advice and legal boilerplate for reuse of intellectual
property. I haven't read through my copy in a while, but I know there
were agreements for merchandising, for music use, etc., so I'd be very
surprised if there wasn't one for syndication.

If you're planning on letting people play your stuff for free (and
good on ya), then that's probably all you need. If money is involved,
however, it's _probably_ well worth your time to get a lawyer. An
entertainment lawyer might work, or an intellectual property lawyer.
Wherever you start, though, a _good_ lawyer should tell you if he or
she isn't the right person for this particular problem, and help to
refer you somewhere else.
