James, I'm in somewhat the same situation as you. I need to get some
video production music for projects I'm working on and a fellow video
buddy of mine pointed me to this software:

http://www.smartsound.com/

He's been using it for a while and, from what he's told me, the cool
thing about this is that you can create your own mixes (pull out parts
you don't want, fade instruments in or out, etc.) and tailor the music
to your project. Again, I haven't bought this yet but it is also based
on the model of buying the disks you need and the "basic" software
mixer is free. The premium version with all the controls is $149, IIRC.

Well, the intro and all music within my Starting WoW show use DJ.
check www.StartingWoW.com for that. I also used DJ for the Penn and
Teller skit in VFTQ at

. It is about half way into the show.

I've used Magnatune twice for theme songs. Non-commercial songs are
free, commercial licenses are reasonable.

Is revamped and has a new look, five shows are up and if you haven't
checked it out, have a listen. I know that what you'll hear may not
please everyone, but the tunes are definately different and unique.
Good downtempo, chill, party music for sure (and I'm talking shows 2-
5)!!! Put your earbuds in and head over to:

It's ready to go, I just need to figure out how to add RSS tags to it
and distribute it.

Any recommendations as to which site I should upload my podcast to? I
want to distribute the podcast to as many listeners as possible.

If you want to make life easy on yourself, $5 a month at Libsyn will
get you very easy uploading, an RSS feed, easy iTunes tagging,
unlimited bandwidth, and a plain but no-hassle Web site. There are
ways to do it flashier, but they require more learning. There are
ways to do it cheaper (i.e. free), but they have more gotchas.
(Disclaimer: I have a commercial relationship with Libsyn. But I was
recommending them for novices even when I wasn't using them myself.)

Note, however, that in terms of getting it to "as many listeners as
possible," putting it up someplace where they can download it is only
the first part of the challenge. Marketing your podcast is *your*
problem, no hosting site will give you much help with it, and don't
expect fast results. Success will be more about you and the work you
put into it than where you upload.

Here's a few steps to start with:

1> Get your site set up, and start producing podcasts. Post them
weekly, or even more often if you're ambitious. Listeners want to
know that if they like your show, there will be more coming.

2> Learn from your mistakes. Listen to every podcast you produce, on
your mp3 player or in your car. When you hear something go wrong (and
you will) make a note of it and resolve not to make that mistake
again. Every show should be better and smoother than the one before.

3> While you're posting your first few podcasts, get involved with
your favorite podcasts. If they have a bulletin board set up, post
there. If they want feedback, send it. Respond to what you hear and
become an active member of the community of listeners. Make note of
which of these podcasts play promos for other podcasts. Also, get
involved in online communities related to your area of interest which
are NOT podcast-focused. Put your podcast URL in your signature for
all of these places.

4> When you have ten weeks of podcasts up, make a promo. It needs to
be engaging content all by itself; if the promo isn't interesting, it
won't help you much. This will be a challenge. The degree to which
you meet this challenge will determine the results of this campaign.

5> Politely ask the podcasters with whom you have been cultivating
this relationship over the past ten weeks to play your promo.
Maintain the relationship with these podcasters even after they play
the promo.

6> Your show will evolve over time. Eventually your promo will seem
stale. Make a new one that reflects your new level of skill and your
changing style, and make it available.

Good luck to you!

Hello Nobillis-

I definitely agree with #1 for two reasons.

1- Get our site up and start producing prodcasts. Though you might say that you
have no idea what to do it on, that is not the concept sometimes; the concept is
to get your feet wet so that your first podcast that took you several hours to
put together will only take minutes when you know the ins and outs.

2- Have hour site up and running with new stuff on a designated time or day.
That way your consumer will know that on Sunday at 6:00pm will be the next
episode of "Doctor Dill Invades the Lawns", that is what I believe will drive
people back to your site over and over again.

Cheers and Happy Airwaves.

I run Podcast Society, which I set up for any podcast, regardless of content
to use for free.

If you need forums, just email me the name of your show, what each forum
should be called, and if the content is "Rated R". More adult-centric show
forums will have their forums invisible until the moderator (you) invite
them to your show forums, basically, this keeps the kiddies from learning
new words.

No slight of hand here, I do mean free.

For general-purpose music you can use for most stuff, without the music
overwhelming what you have to say, try Kevin MacLeod's music from
http://www.incompetech.com. Not brilliant, but you don't want brilliant
music, you want good music that doesn't interfere with your message.

Kevin's good on that.

Hope that helps.

A lot of the old timers here know about him, but it's good info to share for
those who have not been around as long.

He has a great book which I read, with some relevant info.

Steve is right about capacity (with only a couple problems lately, due to
a typo on a filename on my part), as far as Libsyn is concerned. Libsyn
is the simplest way I know of if your intent is to produce and distribute
a Podcast, and anything else is secondary.

There are several mechanisms (requiring more tinkering) to host a podcast
AND have a clever-looking blog to link to your podcasts, and I could AND
you several other ANDs. But to Just Get A Podcast Out and keep it going
out, Libsyn is excellent. As Steve said, the rest is "up to you." Some
folks here can give you some ideas as to what You ought to be Up To.

Steve has some excellent ideas in that regard, and I think someday soon
Steve may actually have a reasonably successful podcast. ;-)

Even I can, though I have a small audience. My core audience just keeps
listening. They don't know why. I suppose the ethical thing would be to
stop using the subliminal audio messages. But hey, it's just a hobby.
It's not like I've put in subliminal messages to tell them to promote the
podcast for me, and or send me money.

Yet.

I'm up to 73 episodes now and since they are all in my rss file they
all appear on iTunes. I'm wondering if it's time to cut off the
number of episodes in the rss file. I don't know - is there any
reason to do this? Is there a limit on how big your rss file can be?
Are potential new subscribers ever turned off by too many back episodes?

Thoughts on this much appreciated

Hello Michael-

I don't know the size of the rss, or even what the heck a rss is anyway; see how
new I am to this field.

But on a personal note...

If the rss file is not being a problem, then definitely leave it alone.

Depending upon what your podcast is about, is maybe when you might want to
streamline it.

But I was listening to Real Estate podcasts and I used the older ones to compare
to the newer ones for strategy.

Though every new subscriber is different, you can't please them all.

So best bet would be to put what you got out there and as the saying goes,
"...if you don't want to listen to it, then don't."

The best advice for anyone that I have for you regarding having tons of
podcasts, is to make sure that your file management is at its top of its game.

Label all of your podcasts for what they are and don't ever use those default
names. I.e. 38264512.wav or especially
1898%&#help7$%house*&@investing*(%sell.wav

Hope this helps at least 1%.

Cheers

I imagine that most RSS feeds are being generated by a blogging
platform of some kind, and every blogging platform I've seen lets you
set how many of the most recent articles are in the feed.

We've produced 160 weekly editions of our show, and we keep the last
20 of them in our feed. In our case, this is a parameter we set in
our blogging software.

This topic has come before on this list. Some felt that it was good to have
as many episodes available via RSS as possible. Others contend that having
that much information in your RSS file could be problematic, as the file is
constantly being accessed by aggregators looking for updates. The idea is
this: A large RSS file that's constantly being hit by aggregators could
cause a strain on your website's bandwidth, whereas a smaller file (with
less episodes available) wouldn't. In general, RSS feeds carry only the
most recent items. Regardless, my advice is, if you're not noticing any
problems due to the size of your RSS file, then leave it as is. You'll
probably get more downloads from your archives that way.

If you have feedburner host the rss file, then you don't need to worry
about the hits to your webserver.

"Sly Crooner of Swanktown" is the podcast that chronicles the
extraordinary everyday lives of the irrepressibly stylish and terminally
bon vivant habitues of the Royal Palm Court Lounge in Swanktown. They
are at once sweet, desperate, glorious and pathetic. Just like you.

This week Dr. Peculiar struggles to find the magic music that will
unlock the heart of the mysterious, beautiful and sad woman in the
corner. There's lots of competition for her affection and his
desperation mounts. If only he could get her out onto the dance floor .

Once I hit too many shows so that it creates a problem for RSS readers, I'll
just let them drop out of my feed, but will make them available in packages
of 10 from one of my webservers. I suppose if bandwidth becomes an issue, I
can upload them to archive.org as well and let them handle the bandwidth and
storage.

I'm looking to add some new hosts to Kore New Media, Florida's largest
podcast group.

We have 7 active shows already, we're looking forward to another 3 in 2009,
one of which will be video. The more popular shows are Kore News, Kore
Groove and Kore RPG. We produce nearly a gig of content each month. 2009
will have us pushing about 1.5 gigs per month.

Priority will be given to D&D 3.5 players for our D&D gameplay podcast (our
most popular show). Living in South Florida is a plus!

We've got about 1,700 unique listeners across all shows and look forward to
about 5,000 by the end of 2009. At this point I'll have advertising and will
hand checks to all talent and producers!

Even if you're in another show, I'd still like to hear from you if you're
interested.

Hey Walt-

Why is it that all of the good stuff happens south from where I live in Colorado
or out of state. Grrrr....

I am an avid D&D 3.5 player and getting into 4.0 now.

Would love to help you out, but I am just learning the ropes of podcasting and
that when my fricking st-55 microphone works on my Mac. Grrrrrrr....

I am going to try and log in to listen to what the D&D 3.5 is talking about.

Cheers
