I have a great deal of respect for this, Paul. Not many men are open
enough to have (or admit) such a strong and sensitive reaction to
aesthetic perfection. Particularly in another man.

(Me, I was thinking about *Minx* naked. But maybe I'm just weird that
way. Far be it for me to object if that's not as interesting to you.)

Agreed! I've only recently begun playing with the H4, but I recorded
an entire audio book for a client using my trusty SM58 through the H4
and it worked great. Ya gotta have that gain up, as Steve says.

I've used it. it works fine. To do something else you simply unstrap the
Ultrapod. I can similarly mount the set up on a stand or table and its all
rigged set to go -- if necessary I don't have to use a mic on the camcorder but
run a lead to the speaker's mike instead or the meeting amplifier setup.

The point being I can sort of sync two recording devices in real time -- as I
set out to do.

That presumes that I edit the video first. I often have to access the audio
straight after the event to write newspaper copy.

In most instances, such as if I'm working to cover a protest march, I need both
the mobility and the recording length the audio assures when my mini DV camera
power resource can cut out after a time if I don't have a reserve battery
pack.(But then I don't want to edit heaps of video or overload my computer with
huge video files but still have the event extensively covered)

I think audio is good for covering talk but when you engage with other occasions
you need to be flexible and wonder what suits the coverage/reportage.

I found that with podcasting an event -- I ended up with a lot of audio and the
challenge of a subtle edit to bring it to a worthy publishing. It is also the
case that online you will , if you publish ab hoc and only occasionally as I do
-- you will pull more viewers than listeners -- that's a video fact of web life
today.(Despite the fact that online web video more often than not offers simply
atrocious sound quality.)

So do I want to forgo audio? No. So what I do is straddle media and for me I
try to do it el cheapo and sue what I've got (and what I already know).

I'm oh so multimedia, you see.

I face the same debate in regard to covering conferences. You want an clear
audio record of each or most of the presentations. But you also want enough
video to give people a taste of the event, edited up as to summarize the main
issues, debates or whatever. Theres' an unbearable habit online to shoot whole
talks in video format as though someone wants to sit and watch some talking
head address them from their computer screen for an unbroken 60 minutes.

But some talks, short ones, can work -- even if divided up into short video
segments for online publishing.

Thanks all for the thoughts on the H4. I ordered and H4n and am eagerly
waiting on its arrival. The discussion about gain and haivng suficient
difference between sound level and ambient room sound was very informative.
I have had similar problems with my Heil PR-40 going into my Alesys mixing
board. The levels are generaly too low and I either have to speak louder
than is comfrtable into the microphone or turn the gains up so high on the
mixer that there's bad ambient room noise. (The room is a huge "bonus room"
in my house with high ceilings and lots of flat echoy walls. ) Usually if I
fiddle with the gains I can get it just about where I want it and then do a
bit of compression and amplification in software. The problem is that in the
long run, I'd like to be able to do a more or less "live to tape" podcast.
So I still have lots of learning to do. Which brings me to my next
question.....

I have been watching all my local community college course catalogs for a
sound engineering course that I could take but have not seen any. Is anyone
aware of any online training for sound engineers? And failing that, gasp, I
might even be willing to read a book on the subject if anyone could
recommend a good one.

Thanks,
Calvin Powers

Calvin, you might try making a sound box. Mine cost me two dollars: a

I record in a spare bedroom with no acoustical treatment except that my

Hey Dan-

Great idea!

What other material would be great to use instead of the gray foam?

Maybe a paper egg crate?

Bubble wrap?

Flat foam?

Is the sound deadening caused by the material used or the angled design?

I listened to #22 and then compared it to #23 and it seemed that #22 was a bit
louder.

Does the foam deaden the area and make it louder when recording?

If so, would just turning down the levels fix the problem?

Turn in next week for Dan's Fix'm Tips.

All the stuff you mentioned as liner material is inexpensive - I'd say
experiment. Try 'em all! Try a blanket, too. I don't know the physics
of sound deadening; I just try different things and see what works in
real life.

#22 was louder than #23? Probably I just had the level set differently
when I recorded it.

As for adjusting levels to fix problems, give it a try and see what
happens!

G'day all

Since my return from the US, I have moved away from WP.com and now am
hosting my blog with a host using WP.org as my blogging platform. I have
combined all 5 of my shows on the one website and overall I am happy with
it. While there are probably some things that need to be tweaked on the
website, I am still new to the WP.org side of the fence with plugins etc
etc.

One problem I am noticing when scheduling posts for later publishing is that
the audio player and MP3 enclosure are not on the post when it is published,
even though I put the MP3 into the relevant field on the plugin when I do my
show notes. So when the episode's show notes come out, it often comes out
without the enclosure/player for the MP3. Then I have to re-add the MP3
filename again.

I'm not sure if it me at my end, my blogging host's end, the WP platform or
the podcast plugin. I am using WP 2.8.1 & PowerPress 0.8.3

Any suggestions welcome.

Hello Erk,

This is a known bug with PowerPress and WordPress versions 2.8+. I have
a fix in place for the next version of PowerPress, which should be
released sometime in the next 24-48 hours. I've been working on a lot of
other features and bugfixes in this version, hence the delay.

This next version of PowerPress fixes some bugs with the "play in new
window" feature not working in Chrome and Safari. It also includes a
number of new options to specify your own custom iTunes keywords,
summary and subtitle. We've added a big warning when you enable these
fields that you need to validate your feed every time you create a new
episode, one wrong character in these fields can cause problems with
your iTunes listing. We've also added an embed feature for those who
post video to sites such as YouTube, Viddler or blip.tv. And our biggest
requested feature, a shortcode will soon be avaialble so you can insert
the player within the middle of your blog posts.

We have removed the "play on page" option in the next release. The
option has been a source of confusion with the "play in page" option.
The "play in page" option will now be used in its place.

If you've been using a Hybrid based WordPress theme and had problems
getting PowerPress (or other plugins for that matter) to work, I've
recently traced through both the Hybrid theme source code and WordPress
and discovered the problem is in the Hybrid theme when the meta
description from the excerpt setting is enabled. Unfortunately the
author of the Hybrid theme didn't take kindly when I explained to him
that the bug can be fixed within his theme. In so many words he said he
could care less if the Hybrid theme ever worked with PowerPress. The
next version of PowerPress will work with the Hybrid theme, but if you
are using an older version or have found other plugins that don't work
with the Hybrid theme (such as PodPress), I've written a plugin that
fixes the problem: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/hybrid-bugfix/

Thanks,
Angelo

How about plush carpet remnants? I'd guess you can get them for free from a
local carpeting store or even a sample for a couple bucks?

Hey Dan-

Cheers

Well, I see that yahoogroups has stripped out the photo I sent with my
note to Calvin, making the post useless.

Trying again:

Calvin, you might try making a sound box. Mine cost me two dollars: a
dollar for the milk crate and a dollar for the foam rubber camping pad
that I cut up (got them both at yard sales):

http://danhughes.net/pod/studiobox.jpg

I record in a spare bedroom with no acoustical treatment except that my
mic is in this box. Looks weird but sounds fine! (Audio sample: listen to
program #022 at http://thetreasurecorner.com which was recorded with this
setup.) I use a Rode NT1000 into a small Mackie mixer into my desktop, no
processing at all.

Howdy all,

I'm still very much a newbie to podcast production and would appreciate any
hints/advice/criticism of episode
4<http://www.taprootradio.com/2009/07/taproot-music-feed-4-ian-thomas-leo.html>o\
f
The Taproot Music Feed that you'd be willing to share.

The podcast features phone interviews, talk sets, and music tracks. I'm
starting to get the hang of mixing these elements together so that they come
out at the same level and I think I'm getting better at in studio voice
recording. But my ears are also very inexperienced, so I'm sure there are
things that more experienced podcasters will hear that I don't. So please
feel free to give me your thoughts on how I can improve the production
values of the podcast. You can either respond to the list or tome directly.

Thanks,
Calvin

Thanks for the quick reply, Angelo. I look forward to the new version.
Hopefully that will fix this issue as it was doing my head in!

Calvin, you need to fix your website portal.

http://www.taprootradio.com works, but taprootradio.com and
http://taprootradio.com both are dead. All three of these forms should
go to your website.

Most people nowadays don't bother with the http:// or the www. part, and
they won't bother trying again if that doesn't get them there.

Calvin, leaving out the http:// and the www. to access your website
should work, but it doesn't. You need to fix that.

Walt, I think plush carpet samples would work fine in this box. Maybe a
thick blanket, too. Should be fun to experiment with different materials
and see what effects you can get.

Mind you, this is coming from a guy that knows not a lot about the science
of soundwaves in the wild, but I think a carpet would work better than a
blanket because the waves would get trapped in the more porous surface, as
opposed to a blanket, unless you made the blanket look like one of those
wrinklie dogs?

Walt speculates,

Walt, I think this is one of those cases where instead of dragging out
the calculator and audio formulae and graphing the theoretical frequency
bands for different materials, it's easier (and more fun) to just try
each material and see what it souds like to human ears in the real world.

P.S. The wrinklie dog may actually be your best bet, if you can get him
to hold still.

Hey all - I know Podpress may eventually need to go. For now, its what I use.

I want to make some changes on my site and I need to inquire about Category
Casting. Is anyone using it? How do you set it up?

Currently my site http://www.handyguyspodcast.com sends all blog posts out in
one feed. Fine.

I am adding separate pages "Paul's Corner" for example. Here Paul can blog about
things. I dont want this content going out in the feed. Ideally I would like a
separate feed for Paul's Corner.

I have a plugin that lets me restrict posts of certain categories from going
into the feed. As I was implementing it I remembered the term category casting.
Hmmmm, I thought, maybe Podpress can handle this for me.

Unfortunately no podpress forums or documentation i can find on this feature.

I have PodPress 8.8 and WP 2.8.2 and the no revisions plugin. All is working
fine.

Thanks
