Are there any advantages in using Fire Recorder over the standard Voice Memo
app?

I think the AudioBoo people are planning a Blackberry version. Though,
that's still not a "from any phone" service. I think this Cinchcast thing
can be used from any phone, though.

I just checked out your podcast in the Listen app and it displays your 10 latest
episodes. The 10 episode setting is a limitation set in the application.

Listen is relatively new (about 3 months old), for example the last update now
includes a Listen user agent so we can detect it in Blubrry Media Download
Statistics. I would recommend going to
http://groups.google.com/group/listen-discuss and leave a comment that you would
like the Listen app to display all of the episodes found in your feed. Also
mention you're a podcaster and explain that your older content is still
fresh/evergreen.

If you have a friend who has an Android phone, ask to see the application. I
have nothing but good things to say about Listen, it already does more than
iTunes on the iPhone.

I just got an email from someone who just got a Droid and he listens to podcasts
using Google Listen on his Droid. Apparently however, Google Listen only gives
him my latest episode and not a list of all of them. Anyone know how to get
this fixed so he has access to all the episodes?

Hey Michael,
The 320x240 seems viewable to me. I could read all of the graphics in your
last video episode without any problem. If you can't change the width of the
site then I say leave it as is.
Another option would be to upload your video to a high quality video site
like Vimeo then embed the video in your page. The drawback would be that you
would lose the stats on the video, though you could use Vimeo's basic views
stats.

Side note: I like the intro video that you have on your home page. It tells
visitors everything they need to know to get around. Well done. I also like
the episode maps. A lot of podcasters struggle with keeping older episodes
in front of their listeners, but your map does a great job of categorizing
episodes.

Keep up the hard work!

Will

The only problem with those stats on that site is when you compare them
to actual surveys that you have high sampling rates, they are always way
off. I would never ever use those stats when it came to telling an
advertiser what your audience makeup is. If you want a feel good number
then they are probably ok..

But I can tell you from real polling in which an accurate sampling was
obtained that the numbers they quote from multiple sites we have
compared to are no where close.

Angelo - yup, that was the fix. Here's the thing: the video is 640x480, but the
width of the center of my webpage is a little less than that, so I typed in a
custom width and height. Apparently that was causing the problem. When I
changed the Powerpress settings to 320x240 it plays without scrolling. I'd like
the video to play at 640x480 when you click on the "Open in New Window" link,
but it still plays at 320x240. I guess I can live with that.

What does the group thing: is it better to have video play at 320x240 than
640x480 on your web page? (faster download perhaps?)?

This is a limitation with Quicktime. If your video is 320 x 240, then
the absolute smallest size your video area can be is 320 x 240. If your
video is 640 x 480 and PowerPress Appearance Video settings are set with
the default width of 320 and default height of 240 then your video will
not appear. Essentially, the scale must be 1 or greater for Quicktime.
If your video is 640 x 480, then use those values for your PowerPress
Video Appearance width x height settings.

If you are doing anything larger than 640x480 (such as 1280 x 720 for
AppleTV), I would recommend submitting your video to a video sharing
site such as Blip.tv or YouTube and use the embed provided by that site
for your podcast episode. Large files make viewing video from the web a
less pleasant experience than using a flash based player from a video
sharing site such as YouTube. In PowerPress you'll need to configure the
'embed' option to your Episode Entry Box settings to take advantage of
this technique. PowerPress will use the video sharing site embed in
place of the quicktime embed on your web pages but continue to use the
Media URL to your quicktime for the download links and in your feeds.

It wont give you instant results. We don't survey regarding demographics but we
provide demographics. How? We assume that the demographics of the website
visitors is the same as the podcast listeners. If you can make that assumption
you can use some web analytics to get your demographics.

We only get age, gender, income, education, race, and kids/no-kids.
http://www.quantcast.com/handyguyspodcast.com#demographics

The nice thing about these demographics is they are not reliant on someones
honesty in a survey, you get a larger sample size, you get close to 100%
participation (only those that block cookies and javascript aren't included)

Creepy? Maybe. Valid? I think so.

You just need to add a little bit of javascript to the webpage(s) where people
get your podcast(s) and quantcast will do the rest.

Without the tracking code quantcast only estimates. Here are yor estimated
demographics.
http://www.quantcast.com/DoctorFloyd.com#demographics

That shows you attract Poor old people with graduate degrees. Any sense if
that's even close? Add the javascript for more accurate results.

Quantcast is also able to provide media stats but it requires you to do some
embeding of code in your player. Still doesnt address non-web players, itunes
and such. Therefore I rely on the webstats/demographics.

I'm an Apple enthusiast in most things but prefer to do my podcast on a PC
because I like Audition better than GB.

I'm curious: what fuels this switch? GarageBand's ease of use? I see no
technical advantage for the Mac over the PC. Why do people switch when they
do switch?

I don't think there's been much of a switchover; it has always seemed to me that
the great majority of podcasters have been Apple users to begin with. (I'd guess
as much as 95%, although I'm sure it's not that high.) I'm curious as to what

If anything, the number of PC podcasters would likely to be growing, not
shrinking, as more PC users discover podcasting.

Ed,

Haven't done a podcast in a while, but used Garageband when we did.
We were very pleased with the software, with few glitches or complaints.

I understand your feelings about Mac advertising and fanaticism.
Although
I'm a Mac fanatic myself (might as well admit to my weaknesses), I am a
bit put off by the "us vs. them," condescending tone of the ads that
Apple
runs. And I'm frustrated and dismayed daily at the divisiveness and
adversary
nature of our culture, which isn't entirely unique even to the U.S.

To my brother podcaster and computer user, may you have success in
whatever
hardware/software path you choose.
