I am planning on charging a small fee for an expanded version of my podcast, and
have been looking for a service to serve the member show through, such as
ShowTaxi.com says they can do. But I sent them a question over a week ago,
actually a couple of times, and even called them, but have never heard back from
them. This concerns me that the site might not provide the support needed, if my
members have any issues downloading the podcast. So I was wondering if anyone
here charges for their podcast, and if so, what to you do to make it work? Do
you use a service or a script? I would like to find something to make this work
that doesn't cost a lot, if anything.

I use www.121podcasting.com (premium cast) Wich takes your RSS feed
(typically one to many) and makes it one to one. Then if someone doesn't
pay, you turn off their feed. You can also sell digital products (physical
too) have coupons, all sorts of stuff. It's kind of pricing, but once you
get a few subscribers it pays for itself. I contacted show taxi when I first
built the school of podcasting and I don't believe I ever got an email back.
I ended up reading about them in Lisa Barne's book about making money with
podcasting.

Premium Cast, mentioned by Dave Jackson earlier, is the only all in one
service that I've heard of for this.

But, Cliff Ravenscraft of http://GSPN.tv and
http://PodcastAnswerMan.comhas a premium service for most of his
shows. He recently did a webinar,
which is available as a video download for a fee, on how he does this. I
have to rewatch the recording, but I don't think he had to pay much, if
anything for the tools he uses. He currently has 350+ community members
paying $10 per month for his content.

Here is the webinar description that he used at the time:
http://pamplusmembership.eventbrite.com/ You can contact him about the
recording and cost if you are interested.

I could never get the amember thing to work. I tried it. It works great for
the member site. Does every person get their own RSS feed? How do you "turn

*The Story - The Voices – The Podiobook*

There’s nothing quite like the feeling an author gets when he holds his
own book in his hands for the very first time. It is inspiring,
invigorating, and the beginning of a very long and arduous journey.

Hi, my name is Kenn Crawford, author of the zombie horror novel, /Dead
Hunt/. I would like to tell you about the podcast audio version of my
book and ask you to help me spread the word. Don’t worry, I'm not trying
to sell you a copy, there are no lists to join, I'm not looking for
email addresses or any of that nonsense – it’s just me wanting to tell
you about a book that is so new I’m still playing with the bubble wrap.

*The Story*

Off the coast of Nova Scotia on a remote island, a lonely scientist, a
powerful computer, a simple mistake, unleashes a new threat somewhere in
the hills of Margaree. Dead Hunt is the chilling tale of a desperate
father’s undying love, a daughter frozen in time, and the small group of
teens trapped in the aftermath of walking dead.
/“I was positively terrified while reading Dead Hunt.”/
-- Holly Christine, Reviewer for The Pittsburgh Books Examiner

*The Voices*

Dead Hunt is narrated by author R.E. Chambliss and features the voice
talents of: Kimi Alexandre, Brian Brown, Ry Stevenson, Melissa Bartell,
Erk and Kim Butler. With special guest appearances by Andrew Ball,
Arlene Radasky, Judy, Kristopher Lamont, Lindsey Burns, Lisa Tobias,
Neil Stringer, Nobilis Reed, Randall Carruthers, Tom Storms and
Featuring Rick Stringer of Variant Frequencies as the voice of Professor
Patrick Heslin, and introducing “Robin” as herself.
Music by Farrell Jackson, Tom Storms, Gregory Cain and Kenn Crawford.
/ “Dead Hunt is a compelling story with superior production values.”/
--Dilwyn Havard, Biochemical Scientist, Cardiff, Wales

*The Podiobook*

March 19th, 2010, /Dead Hunt/ debuts on Podiobooks.com – a place where
listeners, authors and creators come together with more than 300 titles
available online. Please help me kick start the launch of my debut
novel, /Dead Hunt/, on Friday, March 19th, by visiting
http://podiobooks.com/title/dead-hunt Right now that link is a blank
page but don't worry, it'll work on Friday. Can't wait for the launch?
Dying to hear a few episodes right now? Visit
http://deadhunt.kenncrawford.com and listen online today!

Tell your friends, tell your neighbors, just don't tell your kids
because this book contains coarse language and graphic violence.
Listener discretion is recommended so I wouldn't suggest it at the next
church social either. Forward this email to everyone you think might be
interested in this type of audio book but please, do not spam anyone.

Thanks everyone

Howdy,

I have been working on editing up the interviews for the next episode of the
taproot music feed podcast and have screwed something up which I am having
trouble debugging.

I used adobe audition just like always to mix the audio clips into a single
MP3 file. When I look at the properties on the MP3 file it shows 128Kbps and
44khz sample rate. I can load these MP3 files into my iTunes library just
fine and play them. But when I sync them to my iPod it doesn't work.

On the iPod, the files show up just fine and I can "play" them and the iPod
looks like it's playing the file, but no sound comes out at all. I can see
the timers counting down the remaining time, etc etc. But no sound is coming
out.

And yes, I can play other MP3 files and I checked to make sure the volume
was turned up all the way.

Anyone have any theories?

Thanks,
Calvin

Theory #1:
1) Did you do any kind of processing to it like noise reduction?
I used Audition for my audiobook and one of the voices was a bit noisy
so I used noise reduction. On playback everything seemed fine but on the
ipod, I couldn't hear that voice. The best I could figure was the
combination of processing on that file threw it out of phase. When a
file is out of phase, the left side peaks as the right dips, thus
cancelling each other out. Normally, if it is out of phase on one thing
it is out of pahse on everything, so I guess it wasn't fully out of
phase, but enough that the ipod couldn't play it properly.
If you don't have a plugin to phaseshift the file, try exporting it
again as a mono file and see if that helps If the mono file plays,
import that into a new sample and convert the sample back to stereo.

Theory #2:
You ain't gonna like this one... shortly after my ipod wouldn't play
part of the mp3, it died. I'm not talking battery dead... I'm talking
dead in the water dead- toast - fried - kaput - expired - never to be
played again, dead, turning my beloved ipod into a paperweight. Its an
old 40 gig drive that's as thick as a pack of cigarettes. I listened to
a lot of podcasts and podiobooks on that old thing. I'm gonna miss it. RIP

Hopefully, your problem is a slight phasing issue.
Kenn

Ken,

Thanks for the input. Theory 1 has some merit to it. Because I recall having
some problems with audition that had similar symptoms. When I was in
multitrack view, I was only hearing the right channel when I hit the play
button. The sound level meters showed two stereo tracks going up and down,
but sound was coming only out of the right speaker. When I went into the
track edit mode, it played just fine. I messed with the audio hardware
settings and messed with the assignments of tracks to sound drivers until
the problem went away, but I really didn't know what I was doing. So this
idea of the tracks being out of phase could explain what I was seeing.

I think I'm just going to go back to my original source files and create
brand new adobe audition sessions and remix from scratch.

Hi, all.

http://www.RadioGuestList.com <http://www.RadioGuestList.com> offers a
free guest expert booking service via email.

As a long-time podcaster myself, I know that finding good guests to
interview can be a real pain. I started www.RadioGuestList.com
<http://www.RadioGuestList.com> as research for my latest online
marketing book and it's getting pretty popular.

If others here want an easy way to find better podcast guests,
subscribing to the email service is easy and free. You can post your
booking needs for free and the list will mail guest experts worldwide.

Most podcasters report several good guest responses per posting (and
dozens in the case of "hot" topics, too).

Hope that's helpful!
Scott

p.s. I'm a long-time podcaster but new to this list, so apologies if
this is not helpful.

Good Saturday everyone,

Hope you are enjoying your weekend. Can someone tell me if something
like this is legitimate? I just did a show on the Amazon Kindle and in
my comments section today (In the SPAM) was what looked almost like a
ping from this website. I looked it over but not sure what to think.
Apparently he takes tech posts off different blogs and social networking
sites and then posts them on his site. He did reference back to my site
with a link so it
isn't like he is pretending it is his own. I am unsure what to do. Would
I approve it or delete it out of my SPAM? Here is a link to his site
http://hightech.gspvn.org/ <http://hightech.gspvn.org/> if anyone would
like to take a look. I got a second one from this site too
http://starttags.com/ <http://starttags.com/> which looks like they are
doing the same thing. Is this common to have? Any help would be
appreciated as I am not quite sure what to do with these. Thanks

I'm embarking on some sort of quest: to understand podcasts.

Don't get me wrong: I've got some sort of intuitive understanding of
them, as I've been consuming them for years, as many as 300
simultaneous subscriptions. I've produced one solo for nearly four
years, been involved regularly with others.

I also understand them mechanically, right down to where are the bits
go. (Well, maybe I can't remember all the details, but the process is
simple.)

No, I'm after a little bit more abstract an understanding, something
that has a better chance of answering "So, what's so big about
podcasting, anyway?" and "Why is podcasting not just XYZ with feature
ABC?".

It's been a curiousity of mine for a while now. Having to give a small
(20min) teaching seminar about it has brought my curiousity to a
sharper point.

I've heard lots of podcasts about the mechanics of podcasting, but
very little on the philosophy of podcasting. I have it in mind that
this might be something I can contribute to, so I'm going to turn this
into a periodic podcast about podcasting, as well as some sort of
supportive blog (at http://understandingpodcasting.com).

If you have opinions, facts, knowledge, ideas, links to existing shows
doing this, links to good books you think I should read, links to
articles, statistics, anything -- I'd love to hear from you. Assume
I've never heard it -- I've done some research, but I'm only at the
beginning, formally.

Some questions I'll be adding:
* Do podcasts have standards? Do they need them?
* Is amateur podcasting coming to a crest?
* Is podcasting a fad?
* What is the importance of show notes?
* Is podcasting important?
* Where did podcasting come from? Where is it going?
* ... and many more. What are your questions?

The question I'd like a little more immediate response to is this: how
many podcasts are there? I don't know if there is any actual
definitive source for this information (I don't think so), but
estimates would be useful. I've found older information, but I suspect
that figures from 2006 and 2007 are wildly out of date..

Thanks!

Greetings fellow podcasters,

I've been doing more and more interviews in my podcast. Up till now, I've been
interviewing people I've already met, but I'm starting to expand past that, so
I'm looking for the best way to contact people to request an interview.

I just sent off a request that looks vaguely like this:

> Dear XXX:
>
> I would like to interview for my podcast, The Skeptical Viewer. We are a
podcast that focuses on how the paranormal is portrayed in the media. Are you
interested?
>
> You can find our podcast here:
http://www.skepticalviewer.com/category/podcasts/
>

It struck me as too brief, but I couldn't think of anything else to add. What
else should I have said?

I have a bit of experience in this department, as Geek Cred is *all*
interviews...

You've got a little tagline describing the show (though something a little
more substantial might be better), but for starters, you should include why
you want to interview them, what type of topics you plan to cover, how long
you want to talk to them or expect it to take (so they can block out their
schedule), and what method (phone, Skype, etc.) you plan to use to interview
them.

I am a podcaster and a radio host here in Northern California. I have no
problem getting guests and I request for them to be on the show very
informally. Out of something like 14 guest that I asked to come on my show,
only 1 ignored me. You have to remember that as much as they are helping
you, you are helping them. If they are famous, you are promoting them, if
they have a book, you are promoting their book, etc.

I first try to find a phone number. If I can't find one I'll then find an
email address. Sometimes you will get the person directly, other times you
will get their agent/publicist/whatever else they want to call it. I've
never even tried to send a letter to request an interview.

Good Luck,

Stephen,

Steve Riekeberg has offered very good advice. I would add that it's worth
flattering the prospective guest. Not in an insincere way, of course. But
letting them know how much you appreciate them--and meaning it--can help
persuade.

Hi guys

It's Kimi from TaleChasing and Guardians Novel!

Long time no hear right?
Things are still going with the podcast and I'm getting ready to do a show
on both explaining my absence, but I wanted to write and let you all know
that my voice work is taking off and I'm professional now! ;)

I'm doing lots of promos, trailers, and audiobooks. I wanted to mention my
voice website for feedback and just to show off (
http://www.gifted-reader.com) but to also let you know I'm available to our
community for voicework for very very reasonable prices if anyone is in need
of anything.

Kimi

Kimi, on your credits page you are sticking in apostrophes where they
don't belong.

It should be "Voiceovers", not "Voice Over's"

Plural, not possessive.

Best,

If anyone needs a female voice for their project, get Kimi!!!
She plays the lead role of "Lucy" in the podiobook version of my novel,
Dead Hunt, and I could not imagine anyone else voicing the role. In
fact, I started writing a new novel that was inspired by her voice. But
I'm just some unknown author you have never heard of endorsing someone
who has worked on my project so what weight does that really carry,
right? Well.... I am a new and unknown author who was the V.P. of
Production for an advertising company and I heard and recorded voices on
a daily basis. I ran a recording studio. But don't take my word for it -
go to her website, listen to her voice and discover for yourself that it
doesn't matter if it's a promo for your podcast, a bumper for your radio
station or a major character in your book, you will not be disappointed
with what Kimi can deliver.
