I'm here to tell you though that while they mean well they are not the most
efficient people. One team will fix it and then another will unfix it.

I know whatever I do I don't want to mess around with my feed again-- but my
issues were slightly different. I think I can keep the feedburner feed even if
I end up switching to wordpress. My issue was that my feedburner feed was the
whole blog, and the podcast episodes as a result weren't properly archived by
itunes. I created a second feed just for the podcasts, using a blogger tab, and
that works like a charm.

It does mean if anyone on itunes goes to the link, they are sent just to the
page of podcasts, not the home page, but the tabs are there so if they want to
know more they can.

Apple has much better things to do than to fix the problems with podcaster's
feeds. If they took the time to fix everyone's issues (most of which are
self-imposed), they wouldn't have time for much else. I think they could make
things a little easier, like making a real setting and set up page for podcast
owners, where they could just plug in a new feed (and validate that feed within
iTunes), but for something they aren't making any money on, they don't do that
poorly with podcasts.

My colleague's design menu is WILDLY different from mine-- we're both on firefox
and both using macs, but she doesn't have the text background button, and she
has a button to type in Hindi (and other languages) that I don't have.

there is no "control" at blogger just community groups so I thought I'd ask here
in case anybody happens to know. Her version of Firefox is old; could that
affect it?

Does she have transliteration turned on (Settings tab, Basic, scroll down to
the bottom)? The description there says, "Adds a button to the toolbar for
converting words from English to the selected language. (You may later
change the language in the Post Editor).
Your transliteration corrections will be saved to help Google improve this
tool. See Privacy Policy for details."

Not sure what you mean about the text background button tho.

edited to add, I bought a plantronics headset and am having the same issues.
However also bought a radio shack mike and that works. it's not ideal, because
you hear a big click when it mutes and unmutes, but it's much better.

a trip to b&h is definitely in my future!

Don't keep buying equipment. Whatever's going on, it sounds like a software or
configuration issue. You shouldn't be having echo problems in Skype -- it's
supposed to deal with that.

It's hard to say what's wrong without being in front of your computer. From
what I've seen in the past, however, I'd offer this advice: plug your headset in
before starting Skype, and then make sure the audio preferences in Skype are set
to use the headset for both "Microphone" and "Speakers." Sometimes it'll
continue to use the built-in speakers and mic, and you may not always know it
right away.

The standing mic makes it mcuh better.I do have the right things picked in
skype preferences and in audio.

skype 4 is awful. I actually find the audio WORSE when it's skype to skype than
when one of us is on a landline. and of course, since it's for podcast, the
audio quality really matters.

I agree that the new Skype is a huge step backwards. It's almost universally
hated for its terrible interface and reduced reliability. The audio quality
shouldn't be _that_ bad, though. That's why I was thinking something else must
be wrong. If you want, you can downgrade back to the old version:

http://www.skype.com/intl/en/get-skype/on-your-computer/macosx/2-8?cm_mmc=PXBL|0\

(source: http://blogs.skype.com/en/2011/04/an_update_on_skype_for_mac.html )

Anyway, my main point was that buying a bunch of different headsets was unlikely
to solve the problem. If your headset worked fine on old Skype and it works
fine on other applications, blaming the headset doesn't make much sense.

y'all, went back to old skype and guess what? pROBLEM SOLVED! NO MORE HUM. NO
WEIRD ECHO.

UNreal. I'm glad I have the stnding mike anyway and I do want to get an even
better one where you don't hear a click and unclick but it's just too funny. I
thought it was the logitech headset, as some posts online suggested it was no
longer working with mac. But when the plantronics was no better...

yep, it's skype. I was happy with old skype, and will be again! THANKS!

I've been using WordPress off and on for several years now. For both
podcasting and blogging. It can be simple like Tumblr or as complex as any
content manager out there. I recommend it for most.

Most packages allow you to create "snippets" of content, add the MORE field
and everything after more is protected. The problem is when you attach the
mp3 file, it gets blocked, or it comes on down, both are wrong. Wishlist
might be on the right track as each individual gets their own RSS. Digital
Access Pass will have that in a future release. Showtaxi sure sounds like it
will work (and take 30%), and Premiumcast.com does it (for $99 a month), my
client is on a tight budget.

That seems like a 5% off the top business. It doesn't cost materially more to
provide a secure/paid podcast than it does a free one - once the infrastructure
is built. Sure, there's a service there that needs to be paid for, but these
services are not Apple, nor is the market yet big enough to sustain that kind of
pricing (in my opinion).

We're considering entering the podcast hosting business soon, frankly, and we're
looking at the industry to see what the actual pain points are. I know this is
definitely one.

Interesting.

S2Member claims to be able to protect content in "alternate views" such as
RSS feeds. You have to explicitly turn it on, but it's easy to find in their
setup panel. When you turn it on, they say that they intercept all calls to
the database and filter the results according to the caller's membership
level.

S2Member also protects by category, post, page, tag, etc etc. So I figure
you create a category for the premium content, turn on the alternate view
protection and use the rss feed for your premium category. But what I can't
figure is that it must mean they use authenticated RSS although I can't see
where they explicitly say that in the set up panel. They have a pretty good
support forum though so you could ask there.

I haven't actually tried it yet, but that's my plan for when I start
creating premium podcasts.

The Musician's Friend Stupid Deal of the Day today is a doozy - a really
nice minirecorder for less than half normal price.

Records in both MP3 and WAV, uses a mini-SD card, has built-in stereo mics,
and a stereo mic input so you can use a professional mic with it. I just
ordered one.

Deal ends midnight Eastern time today:
