Hello
I'm new to the group, glad to be here.
I've founded a movie blog called Screen Comment here (link
here<http://screencomment.com>)
in the US back in 2007.
It started as a blogger site, and we moved to our current wordpress.org home
I recently started producing the MOVIETRACKS podcast series, in which I
program and comment film scores arranged around various themes.
Here is the iTunes page.
I would more than welcome any comments you may have concerning it.
Usually no one ever comments about anything I do, so if no one's
interested, that's OK, too!
Have a great day.

I have a couple of spots left to fill on my 24hr podcast lineup. Here is
what I am looking for to fill the final spots.

1. I am looking for someone that is a podcaster outside the US to pair
with a english speaking podcaster who is in Moscow. The topic of the
hour will be "Foreign Podcasting"

2. I am looking for two guests that use unique tools to produce their
shows aka there are a lot of ways to record a show. But sometimes you
dont need to follow the norms. Warning this spot happens at 9am Eastern
on the 16th

3. I am looking for two Video Podcasters that are having success with
YouTube and standard podcast distribution. This slot is a late one
10-11pm Pacific

4. I am looking to have one additional guest appear with Karin Høgh at
5am eastern. Karin will be talking about the podcasting space in Europe.
She has been in the scene from the beginning and just looking for a good
pairing with her.

If you think you have something unique to add or could fill one of those
spots email me at geeknews@.... During the 24hrs their will be
plenty of opportunities for people to jump in the show as we always have
people that forget or do not wake up in time. I hope to see all of you
when we kick off on Saturday Morning.

Waiting on a confirmation from Adam Curry as he will be kicking it off
with me at 11am on the 15th if all goes to plan.

Todd..

this here...

Second Call for Podcast Gear

I have started posting the New Media Gear series on my web site -- #3 will
go up this week -- and I wanted to make a second call for your
recommendations/gear you use to produce your podcast, audio or video
projects. If you haven't include your equipment, please send it along.

Be specific about your equipment and share your best gear with everyone,
even if it is just a good mic or a great piece of software.

Please include a link to your web site and shows so I can link the post up
to you when I put it up.

You can see the first two posts at: http://welchwrite.com/cip/

Many Thanks for the great info I have received and the great info to come!

I have one and although it has increased listeners, there are many people on my

I would love to check out some of your pages and maybe we could share each other

Joe,

I think that you should look into Mail Chimp as a free newsletter. This is
very powerful, easy to use and also free. I use a paid service called iContact,
which I really like, but frankly, Mail Chimp would do the trick for me.
I can't speak for the Google service you are asking about, but Mail Chimp is a
mature, proven and free system.

Podcasting/New Media Advocacy Group - A Public-Facing Group Designed to
Promote Podcasting and New Media Content to the Public

One of the things I have always found lacking in the Podcasting Community
is a public advocacy group dedicated to promoting podcasting (and other
forms of New Media such as YouTube Channels) to the general public.

While this group, and others, do a good job of podcasters supporting each
other, we all seem to be left on our own wen it comes to introducing our
shows to the public, as well as the concept of New Media in general.

With advances like the AppleTV, Roku, Boxee and smart TV's, it should be
easier than ever for podcasters to get their shows before the non-technical
public who are just interested in good content. I have often said that one
item required for podcasting to grow into a more powerful medium is to "get
on the TV!" By this I don't mean get purchased by a television network,
etc, but rather "get on the box" that is in nearly everyone's home already.

In that regard, I am proposing the creation of a New Media Advocacy group
specifically to promote podcasting and New Media to the general public. If
there are other interested people, we can set up some online structures to
start this journey and begin got move forward as 2013 begins.

I can offer some more thoughts on this topic if people are interested. It
is something that has been on my mind since 2004.

Interested? Let's start a conversation!

Howdy all,

I'd like to add custom parameters to my MP3 file URLs so I can track from
where they are being downloaded. Something along the lines of
Google'scustom campaign
parameters<http://support.google.com/analytics/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=103386\
3>.
Anyone know if this is possible in libsyn or bluburry?

I'm currently using libsyn and can't find anything in their reporting that
indicates they support reporting by custom campaign paramters. I don't have
any experience with bluburry stats so don't know about them.

Thanks
Calvin

Unfortunately, you can't inject Google Analytics or the methods they document
into media. In particular, it presents a problem adding a query string to the
media URL.

If the goal is to have the same media URL be reported separately in some
instances, then we do have that capability with Blubrry/RawVoice statistics,
we've only used it for enterprise clients up to this point, but shoot me an
email with more details and and we may be able to help you out.

We see this kind of thing frequently on http://play.callisto.fm - lots of
redirects with query strings.

IIRC, CNET has them, as do a few other prominent podcasts.

That said, we did have to write code to handle them properly.

On normal web pages it will work, but do some testing with an iPad, iPod,
Android etc... or via RSS feed (Podcast feed) if the URL doesn't end with the
file extension it will not download in most cases. The question mark character
(for the query string) present problems for other clients as well. Look at the
iTunes podcast specification to see how they recommend handling such tracking,
then try to figure it out without a question mark for the query for maximum
device/software compatibility.

If you want to track without a query string, but using other identifiers,
Blubrry Statistics can do it, as I said before, we have a solution that we've
used for enterprise clients in the past, shoot me an email with details and we
can see if it'll work for you.

Calvin,

You could put up an intermediate landing page that simply redirects to the MP3's
URL. The intermediate landing page could do the job of tracking parameters
appended to the referring URLS either with Google Analytics or with your own
code.

The people downloading won't know that they've been routed through an
intermediate page.

Good luck.

I put this on the Podcasters group on Facebook but wanted to ask it:

While I've been doing my podcast for years, I've recently started adding
video clips here and there. Right now I've done 5 videos that I've put up
on YouTube but to be honest the organic traffic isn't there. My podcast has
two different feeds - one from Talkshoe (where I record the weekly content)
and one from my website (where I post links to the downloads).

I've thought about taking the audio from the YouTube recordings and
uploading them as extra episodes on TalkShoe. That would be easy to do but
I don't know if that's the right way to promote the fact that I've got
videos on YouTube.

Is anyone else doing this? If so, how do you handle the media split? Most
folks that are grabbing an RSS for a podcast aren't going to look for video
content as well, right?

Until Later!

Grabbing the media from the video is easy. I use keepvid.com
Load your youtube video, right click and select copy video url
Go to the keepvid site and paste that in the box. It will search for and
grab the video. From there you can save it to your hard drive in a variety
of formats, the last one listed is for MP3. Click that and follow the steps.

If the video is a talking head shot then the audio should work fine as an
extra episode in your show. If however you are showing people something
that requires them to actually "see" what you are talking about, your
audio-only listeners will not be able to see it and will feel left out. So
the content of your video is crucial when it comes to using the audio from
videos.

Have you promoted your videos on your show and on your website by embedding
the video? If the traffic is not to your satisfaction on the videos, first
drive traffic TO the videos... as more people watch it and click like,
other people will be more inclined to watch it because it has x number of
views. They will in turn seek out your podcast.

When I listen to a show I like I search for other things they are doing,
such as videos because YouTube is the #2 search engine in the world. If it
were me, I would be more concerned with driving traffic to the videos to
build a wider audience there than using the audio from the video to make
extra audio content. Some people may not know you have videos and won't
even think of looking. You could use a "clip" of audio from the video on a
show and then tell people they can watch and hear the entire thing for free
on your youtube channel by clicking www._______.com/youtube where the
"youtube" part is a redirect page to your youtube channel.

My 2 cents,

Call for more New Media Gear!

I have been running a series on my blog, highlighting producers and their
gear. I am looking for another round of sharing and recommendations of the
various gear you folks use and/or recommend on a regular basis. I think it
is important to have "real world" recommendations for those folks who might
be new to podcasting or looking to upgrade.

If you would like to be highlighted in this blog series, please post your
name, your show, a link to you and/or your show, and a list of your
equipment (being as specific as possible as to make/model/etc) Int this
way, we can share that info here, as well as on my blog.

Thanks!

Douglas

Douglas, I've been podcasting for over four years. I do three shows:

In the Treasure Corner - http://thetreasurecorner.com
In the Softball Corner - http://thesoftballcorner.com
In the Old-Time Radio Corner - http://radiofun.info

My mic is absolutely fantastic: A Heil PR-40. I consider it the key to
getting truly professional sound in a home studio.

I also use a Mackie 402-VLZ3 audio mixer. More than adequate for me, since
I use just one mic, no guests.

I built a sound box for two bucks, which works great:

Let me know if you use this!

Thanks,

Best,
