Subject: Streaming Radio Recorder + Podcasting: BlogMatrix Sparks!

Hi all,

We've taken the core "engine" from Jäger that handles downloading
syndication, enclosures, etc.., put a new GUI on it, wrapped in "mplayer"
and "lame" and now we have a new product called "BlogMatrix Sparks!" that
not only handles podcasts (the gui code is not all hooked up yet though for
this -- we'll probably have this out later tonight or tomorrow), it also can
record streaming Internet radio feeds and treat them as podcasts. It also
has a pretty cool OPML browser (screenshots:
http://sparks.blogmatrix.com/sampler/) hooked in.

The Windows announcement is here
(http://jaeger.blogmatrix.com/weblog/archives/2004_12.shtml#003060) and the
Mac announcment is here
(http://jaeger.blogmatrix.com/weblog/archives/2004_12.shtml#003062). The
main difference between the Windows and Mac version is that Windows has a
Mozilla browser built in; the Mac has something much simpler.

The installer on Windows is shared with Jäger. If you've tried that already
and it's not your thing, just turn off the appropriate check boxes.

We'll probably be adding a way soon to upload downloaded radio shows as
podcasts (i.e. RSS 2 + Enclosures). This isn't out of evil intent so much as
a way of sharing resources (CPU power, always-on Internet between) multiple
machines.

Regards, etc...
David

I left it running overnight and it eventually started working, so I
should have it by now.

Thanks for setting it up, I couldn't play the other version...

I came across http://www.libsyn.org/
"We don't want you to be penalized if your show gets popular. That is
why we do not charge for bandwidth usage, or for hosting a static
amount of web storage. Instead, our price model is based on how much
space you need a month."

They have a 'Podcast Basic': $5/month for 100MB per month.
They are hosted at ev1servers.net (which is not bad), but there are
apparemtly no customers yet.
(domain was registered on 25-Oct-2004 - they've only just started)

Thanks for giving ccPublisher a try; I actually released a new version
this morning which fixes a bug that sounds similar to what you
described here. You can find downloads at
http://mirrors.creativecommons.org/software/publisher. Let me know if
you still have problems and I'll be happy to work on tracking down the
bug. Thanks again for giving it a try.

That's some unbelievable pricing. Sounds like a great business model
to me. Everyone should jump to this pretty soon...

I think I heard on a recent podcast (maybe it was DSC?), about a web
site where you can go and trade audio promos with other podcasters.

Does anyone know where this site is located? I'm trying to get some
promo's out to drive more traffic...

Not bad... I have several sites hosted through ev1servers and they
have some pretty good deals as well (check out their "virtual
servers"). They will host your domain, give you 50 email addresses,
100mb storage, and unlimited bandwidth for $10 a month. I pay $30 a
month for all of that but with 300mb. And ev1 has a great pipe. Not
sure about libsyn's pipe...

I just signed up with Bluehost and find them to be very reasonable. I
did a fair amount of research before signing up and they are very
competetive. They offer 2GB of storage and 75GB/month of traffic for
as little as $7/month (with a 2 year contract).

They also pay very generously for referals ($65 per), so if you decide
to go with them, please use this link:
http://www.bluehost.com/track/djohnson68/text1 (I know, shameless
plug, but I have to support my web site somehow...:)

Anyone got any tips on how to pull off a call in show where you
receive live calls?

We tried it out on my home phone to receive calls. The biggest
problem was receiving a call while we were on the line with someone.
The call waiting beeps, I switch over to the other line manually with
the handset and tell the other caller to hold. Then switch back to
the original caller. When we finish up I manually flash back over to
the holding caller.

We took about 5 callers but it was a little rocky. Anyone know of a
better solution?

In Germany it is this way: Some sip-gate based voip provider give the
enduser a normal number where they can be called - and this is then just a
recordable voip call.

Perhaps there is something possible at your site also?

I'm not sure exactly what your problem is. Are you looking to do a
conference call w/ multiple callers on the line at once?

Not exactly a conference with a list of set callers. I post my phone
number up on the website and tell people to call in at a certain time,
so we don't know beforehand who's gonna call and when.

It's tough to do more than a single caller on home telephone lines.
However, if you have two or three separate phone lines you can use a
system like this:
http://www.bswusa.com/prod_item.asp?item=TS6-HOSTPKG

Big bucks. Another way might be to somehow use one of the conference
call services. Google "conference call services" - a bunch will come up.

Typically though, the more callers, the weaker the caller volume but
it's worth a shot.

Ah, so perhaps you want a way to answer the second call w/out the
call-waiting beep? Or to answer it w/out putting the first person on
hold?

Initially I had some problems with the Mac version of ccPublisher--the
files simply wouldn't upload. I contacted Nathan Yergler, the
developer of the app, who responded immediately to my bug report.
Today he worked with me on resolving the issue, and now I'm happy to
say the application works wonderfully. I've uploaded two podcasts to
my archive.org account, and now I have only to wait for the files to
be approved and made available to the public.

Nathan released an updated version of ccPublisher today, and says he's
working on releasing another update tomorrow. Looks like Nathan means
business; he appears to be really working away on this app. This is
going to help alot with bandwidth issues, especially for the
financially challenged among us.

All:

Audio recording from your home phone is tricky due to audio levels and we
went ahead and purchased a commercial interface from JK Audio it's called
the Inline Patch $270.00 American and it gives you 20db or separation to
bring the audio levels up of those that are on the other side of the line.
Check out my latest podcast 12-2-04 we did a 5 minute interview with it. I
am still working out the bugs with it but I like it. If I had the extra cash
they have a better unit for $499.00 that would have been the perfect
solution. I will wait till we start making money (HA). But several companies
who will be sponsoring/advertising with us will be calling in to use it to
get the pitches recorded.

I have a picture of my setup on my secondary host where my shows are
currently residing (till the bw runs out :) ) This site does not have
enclosure support due to not wanting to ping audio.weblogs.com twice with
the same show info link to pictures are here www.geeknewspodcast.com site
with enclosure support is below.

A poor mans way to get the same results get a old phone take the cover off
the ear piece take the two wires off the ear speaker and wire in a patch
cord to run to your mixer then take out the mouth piece and use a secondary
phone to get the calls setup and to talk into then take the modified one and
take it off the hook and mix in the modified headset :) (Idea stolen from
Thomas over at iPodio.com)

Hi all! Michael Lehman from SoftwareLand here...

Just wanted everyone to know that I was able (albeit with a little
magic) to get the new MSN Spaces free blogging engine combined with
Feedburner to create a podcast-enabled blog. You can check it out at
http://spaces.msn.com/members/moresciencehigh and the RSS feed is at:
http://feeds.feedburner.com/MoreScienceHigh

The issue I encountered is that MSN Spaces does not allow you to edit
the HTML of a post and therefore I was unable to include the required
rel="enclosure" attribute of the <a> tag.

What I had to do was create the link in another HTML editor (with the
attribute) and then, while in WYSIWYG mode copy the link and paste it
into the MSN Spaces editor (which worked and brought the tag along).

I'm in conversation with the feedburner people right now to see why
they require this tag and if there's any way around it.

Please let me know if you have any difficulty with this feed. Right
now it only contains a "boing5.mp3" enclosure

JK Audio makes great inexpensive interfaces ... I would actually
suggest the THAT-1 (http://www.jkaudio.com/that-1.htm, retails for
$150 direct from JK) ... or the THAT-2 (http://www.jkaudio.com/that-

I've used both systems and they both work well ... the "in-line patch
hybrid" is a bit pricy, but it does have XLR balanced output ... hmmm.

I have my own setup described in this PodcastBoard conversation
(truly a poorman's setup):

http://www.podcastexpo.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=8#8

Essentially I just used a cheap Radio Shack device called a Mini
Recorder Control (currently about $15). You plug your phone line into
the device, and plug the device into your recorder (in my case, a
microcassette recorder--though a minidisc recorder or even an MP3
recorder would give you much better sound).

The problem with my setup is that I have to record twice--once during
the phone conversation/interview, then to import the recording to my
Mac. An MP3 recorder would make this easier, as I would then simply
have to transfer the recording via USB or Firewire. Some new Sony
minidisc recorders have this ability (previous models only allowed
transfer of files TO the recorder), but I'd wait for Sharp to come out
with this feature. Sharp minidisc recorders are much better suited
for live audio recording--the manual volume level adjustment is one
feature they've always outdone Sony on.

Guys, this is potententially bad advice. Old style phones have 50
VOLTS DC across the phone line and use carbon-based microphones and
speakers, which have the voltage applied to them (resistance based
transducers). If you did this you'd fry your mixer. Newer style
phones may not have the 50V on the handset but I would definitely
check this first with a volt meter before doing anything of the sort.
Usually you need a transformer across the line to isolate the phone
line from the audio equipment.

How are you handling the 20db standard separation between you and the person
you are talking to. I assume you are living with the volume differential.

I checked all of the phones we have here at the house and none had that
voltage, but again I don't have any phones that is more than 3-4 years old.
The last time I saw a phone with a carbon based earphone was some old AT&T
phones 10+ years ago. So I was not aware that was the operating principle
behind them. I would think the majority of new phones have standard speakers
in them. Thanks for the pre-cautionary note though.

Yes, I guess I'm living with it. The volume seems to be the same
between myself and the person I'm conversing with; it is like I'm
listening in on a phone conversation.

With podcasting being a place where developers and end-users party
together, with someone having a feature request which I have no
alliances which client it would be built into (ideally all), is this
the correct forum for that request? If not, where is?

Note, I am more on the end-user side of the house, and my request
deals with specific functions when incorporating the show notes to
downloads on PDA's or cell phone so my feature request might revolve
around not really understanding how opml works.

Warm regards and please let me know if this is the correct forum for
such a request or the correct individual to send the request to so it
is vetted to ensure it makes sense prior to posting.

Hi guys,
I do the emayhem radio podcast and am part of libsyn.com, and at this point I've
been
beta testing the thing with http://emayhem.libsyn.com . We are aiming to be
ready for
action by friday..but all you guys have caught us a little early. We are
working the bugs
out of the system right now... We do plan on keeping to this pricing model.
I've been
testing the interface, so far so good... Your interest gets us very excited and
we are
working passionately to get this puppy ready.
thanks
