David Andelman and I have been connected via the internet for the last few
years. I frequently receive emails from people who remember me from CBS News
or The New York Times, who want to reconnect via Facebook or network through
LinkedIn. Unfortunately, I never worked for CBS News or The New York Times.
And on his end, I suspect David Andelman receives late-night emails intended
for me from overdue bill collectors and people who want him to teach them
how to become sports agents, based on a story I wrote for Gallery magazine
in 1994.
We have both, I believe, handled the mistaken identity issue with good
humor, eventually referring to each other as ³cousin.² Today, I even
introduced David to my daughter as ³Uncle² David.
David is a veteran foreign affairs correspondent whose assignments took him
to more than fifty countries, as Paris correspondent for CBS News and as the
Southeast Asia and Eastern European bureau chief for The New York Times. He
also spent time at the New York Daily News and CNBC.
He is now the author of a topical new book, A Shattered Peace: Versailles
1919 and The Price We Pay Today, as well as two earlier works, The
Peacemakers and The Fourth World War.
When I learned that David, who is currently the executive editor of
Forbes.com, the online identity of the esteemed business magazine, would be
appearing in the new media capital of St. Petersburg, Florida for the St.
Petersburg Times Festival of Reading today, I had to invite my cousin for an
in-person edition of Mr. Media.

Actor
Oscar Isaac
HBO Filmsı ³PU-239²

RSS FEED: http://feeds.feedburner.com/MrMedia
Oscar Isaac, my guest today, co-stars with Paddy Considine in a riveting new
HBO film, PU-239.
Based upon a short story by Ken Kalfus, PU-239 tells the story of a devoted
father and husband -- Paddy Considine -- in post- Soviet Russia who labors
in a deteriorating nuclear plant. After being exposed to a deadly dose of
radiation while trying to avert a plant disaster, he is made a scapegoat and
suspended without pay.
With just days to live and desperate to provide for his wife and young son,
he impulsively steals a small amount of PU-239 -- weapons grade plutonium --
and heads to Moscow to attempt a quick sale.
In Moscow, Considineıs character gets caught up with an inept, wannabe
gangster -- played by Isaac -- to help him sell the dangerous goods on the
black market.
The movie debuts on HBO on November 16.

RSS FEED: http://feeds.feedburner.com/MrMedia
George Gray is having way too much fun on his HGTV show, ³Whatıs With That
House?²
The show, now in its second season, is kind of a goof on the proliferation
of shelter TV shows, where viewers are taken into fabulous homes and
mansions and led around by announcers in hushed, respectful tones. Thereıs
no respect in Grayıs tone -- and rightfully so.
If you havenıt seen the show, I absolutely insist you pause this interview
and set your DVR, Tivo, or VCR to record the show. Itıs on HGTV every
Wednesday at 11:30 PM Eastern or Pacific. You wonıt be sorry.
Back now? Okay.
If Gray seems familiar, it means you probably saw him in ESPNıs sports
fantasy reality series ³Iıd Do Anything² or the syndicated version of ³The
Weakest Link.²

Esquire Magazine editor and best-selling author
Interview with A.J. Jacobs
³The Year of Living Biblically²
WEB SITE: http://www.mrmedia.com
RSS FEED: http://feeds.feedburner.com/MrMedia
A.J. JACOBS must have the best magazine job in America. As editor-at-large
for ESQUIRE, here are a few examples of recent stories appearing under his
byline:
* ³My Outsourced Life,² detailing his effort to send his writing assignments
to India;
* ³Googling A.J. Jacobsıs Brain,² about his proposed effort to catalogue his
thoughts, dreams, and desires;
* ³The Sexiest Woman Alive 2005² and ³2006,² in which he spent five months
teasing readers as to the identities of Jessica Biel and Scarlett Johansson.
And, yes, he was required by law to spend time with each of them, passing
off flirtation as research.
And then there was his equally painful interview with Eva Longoria of
³Desperate Housewives² in which he described each of her body parts in
languorous detail.
Oh, I could go on and on about the women in his professional life. They also
include Mary Louise Parker and Rosario Dawson. But then weıd never get to
the reason for this interview, which is to celebrate his hysterical, yet
thought-provoking new book, THE YEAR OF LIVING BIBLICALLY.

³In the Shadow of the Moon²
Interview with Dave Sington, Director
http://www.mrmedia.com
In the Shadow of the Moon, the new documentary directed by David Sington,
captures all the emotion and enthusiasm about space travel that once
transfixed the American public and seems strangely absent from todayıs world
of technology.
I was eight years old when the Eagle landed on the Moon in July 1969. I
havenıt been the same since. I anticipated a lifetime ahead of flying around
the neighborhood with jet packs, manned missions to Mars, and all kinds of
things that, before that July day, were science fiction and after, well,
they seemed just around the corner.
Now Iım approaching my 47th birthday, and none of my expectations of a space
age came to pass. None. Zero. Zip.
Watching In the Shadow of the Moon, I remembered that lost feeling. Itıs a
wonderful experience, which is why I looked forward to talking with director
David Sington.

Jeff Garlin
³Curb Your Enthusiasm²
http://www.mrmedia.com
Today is a great day to be Jeff Garlin. And for him, tomorrow will probably
be an even better day.
The sixth season of the hugely popular and hysterically funny HBO series
³Curb Your Enthusiasm,² starring Larry David and co-starring Garlin, is now
underway.
But even better, I suspect, for Garlin is that his first movie as writer,
director, and star, I Want Someone to Eat Cheese With, opened on September
5.
The New York Times greeted Garlinıs Cheese this way: ³Laid back and
affectionate, Cheese is the movie version of a dear friend you could spend

I love Consumer Reports magazine (especially it's annual report). I check a
variety of other resources, however, before ultimately making most of my
more expensive purchases. Yet CR is still included in my arsenal of
information.
I'm in my thirties -- I wonder if younger consumers are aware of Consumer
Reports, and if they consult it? I wonder what resources younger consumers
use, besides FatWallet.com and Woot.com (which I liken to CR in many ways)?

In the 1970ıs, my dad never made any purchase of substance without
consulting Consumer Reports. Vacuum cleaners, toaster ovens, window air
conditioners, used cars -- he never made a move without CR.
In those pre-Internet days, he collected the magazineıs back issues the way
I collected comic books. I just kept my comics a lot neater and more
organized than he did his magazines.
Todayıs Consumer Reports is very different from the one my dad admired,
thanks to the Internet. There are a whole host of web sites and services
competing to provide consumer information in what used to be a niche owned
solely by Consumer Reports. Consumers now have instant free access to
consumer-written product performance reviews from Amazon.com to Epinions and
everywhere in between. In the wired world, it seems, everybody has an
opinion and wants to share it.
Weıll talk about that today with my guest KIM KLEMEN. Kim is the new editor
of CONSUMER REPORTS, the flagship publication of Consumers Union. Sheıs also
an old acquaintance whom I worked with at the Tampa Tribune twenty years ago
and whom my wife worked with at the St. Petersburg Times. Kim joined
Consumer Reports in 1997 and has since been managing editor, deputy editor,

Hi there,
The new episode of Lance and Graal (www.lanceandgraal.com) is online
and ready for download!
This week:
Jeva and Betsy present Pagan Headlines.
Betsy speaks about Indo-Wicca, a blend of Wicca and Hinduism.
Rev. Paulette Reynolds of the Wiccan Interfaith Council International
co-leads a network of over 85 volunteers, facilitating cooperation
among Wiccan and Pagan Traditions, troop support, and many other things.
Paper Mache is probably one of the most undervalued art materials. A
pity, since it is super eco-friendly and extremely versatile.
New Essay added to our website: herbal sunscreen recipe.

The first cool thing you need to know about National Geographicıs The Green
Guide newsletter is that you can download an electronic edition of the
latest issue for $2.50 right now or spend $3.50, and theyıll mail you one in
about two weeks.
I like it already.
The Green Guide is truly a magazine of the moment. Whether you believe in
global warming, as Al Gore does, or believe itıs nothing more than liberal
strategery, as the President does, the environment is a hot topic.
I canıt believe I just said that.
Joining me today is Seth Bauer, editorial director of The Green Guide and
thegreenguide.com.
Launched in 1994 and acquired by National Geographic in 2007, The Green
Guide is a bimonthly newsletter and comprehensive Web site for consumers
interested in a green lifestyle.
Over the past 20 years, Bauer has served as editor-in-chief for publications
such as Body & Soul and Walking magazines. Heıs also the co-author of the 90
Day Fitness Walking Program and has been published in The New York Times,
Outside, and American Health. He is also and this is very interesting to
me an Olympic medal winner and a world champion in rowing.

Joltinı Joe Sinnott.
You have to be pretty damn good at what you do for someone to nickname you
³Joltinı.² The name stuck to Joltinı Joe DiMaggio, of course, and is also
part of the eternal legend of Joltinı Joe Sinnott.
Unless youıre a comic book fan, you may not know Sinnott. But if you
recognize the names of Stan ³The Man² Lee and Jack ³King² Kirby, Joltinı Joe
will be forever connected to their accomplishments. Lee wrote the stories,
Kirby drew them, and Sinnott inked them, starting with the fifth issue of
the Fantastic Four in 1961 on through the first appearance of the Silver
Surfer and beyond. Heıs also contributed his talents to Thor, The Hulk, and
Captain America, to name just a few.
You can see Sinnott's work on three new Marvel Super Hero postage stamps -
two Silver Surfers and a Thing -- that were released in late July by the
United State Post Office.
Sinnott is the subject of a new oral history called Brush Strokes With
Greatness, compiled and written by Tim Lasiuta. Itıs packed with
illustrations from his 50-plus year career, starting with a Timely Comics
story called ³The Man Who Wouldnıt Die² on through the development of the
legendary Marvel universe.

For those who love music, movies, television; any media in general.
We talk about anything media. We now, currently, have only one
podcast, depicting a review for the poorly done film, Epic Movie. But
scheduled Tuesday, August 14, we will be reviewing a couple of Mel
Brooks films. If you like the podcast, please download and subscribe.
It doesn't cost you anything, but it will allow us to continue our
podcasting service. So get ready to Bend the Media.

Like most Americans, I donıt have the best eating habits.
I generally try to follow the 80/20 rule. I make an effort to eat smart and
well about 80 percent of the time and give in to my inner teenager the other
20 percent, having an occasional burger and fries.
Over the last 25 years, weıve been barraged by media and marketing that urge
us to eat a better diet and make better choices at every meal, and one of
the magazines long at the forefront of this effort is Time Warnerıs Cooking
Light, and I should know, my wife has stacks of back issues all over the
house.
Joining me today is Mary Kay Culpepper, editor of Cooking Light, which she
took over in January 2001. Since then, the magazineıs audience has grown to
more than 11.5 million readers, and it seems safe to assume that at least a
few of them have improved their health by following the ideas and recipes in
Cooking Light.

Merry Meet!
Thanks to all your support, we're good to go at least for the rest of
August.
Here's what we have for the current show:
Current Episode Lammas and Heatstroke
Jeva and Betsy present Pagan Headlines.
Thanks to your support, Lance and Graal will continue. Betsy and Jeva
take time to give thanks.
The roots of Lammas are ancient, but this Holiday celebrating the
Corn-King's self-sacrifice is especially relevant in these times.
Lammas is an important opportunity to show our gratitude to those who
have made personal sacrifices so that the Pagan community may thrive.
Outdoor rituals are a lot of fun. It's a good idea, though, to take
proper precautions to that heat, rain, and wind don't ruin your
celebration.
The Cabot Temple is gearing up for it's 18th Annual Witch's Ball
this time at the luxurious Hawthorne Hotel in Salem, MA. Rapid Cabot
Freeman of WitchinHour TV provides a first glimpse.
Podsafe music by: True Tribe, Ulph Johansson, Everyday Jones, and Deyo
