Hi everyone,

I have to make my complements to the makers of this liveCD. It's a
great distr. Being new to Linux I have a question? Does iceWM also
have a graphics-manager like kcontrol in kde. So I can configur the
graphical interface, like making icons to mount hd-partitions, change
the wallpaper and so on?

Thanks!

hi quasarbas

I think you could take a look at this FAQ at http://www.icewm.org/

9.6 Can I have icons on the desktop?

Sure, but not from IceWM. Again, this is desktop environment work, but usually done by the respective file managers, since they already know about MIME types, file endings and such. IceWM users usually use idesk, dfm, rox, kfm or gmc, where idesk, dfm and rox are better suited for work on smaller (older) machines than the other two.

*you could find more information here:

There you can find almost everything you need to know:

Hi everyone,

actually I was more looking forward to something from "building a Pollix user guide / remaster guide" to  "create a transplan package" from harddisk install to transplan pollix into a universal Java Utility installer (since everything Java tools runs anywhere, everywhere)

(so we could move all java packages from the /opt/ folders to any OS as we like)

do you guys thing this is possible :)

there is an icewn availabe for windows here  (which requires cygwin)

:)

Hi Mario,

I double checked and there are links there: in the
download section below the screenshots. The current
version of 20040309 (~700M). Maybe that's the (old)
cached page in the browser. Try reloading the page.

I'll learn to make the seed for torrent later :)

hi kendrew,

I've downloaded the pollix-20040309.iso though HTTP
the server twise,

and both file I download got following md5sum:

34dafa0b449fe4db16d96e289115f7b9

which is a different, compare to the orgional
pollix-20040309.iso.md5

524499a99190f5bb35de99015b40bc4a

also I've tried to do a mount -o on the downloaded
file and compare it with the file ./KNOPPIX/md5sum and
found a different checksum on the ./KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX
file

is this mean I'm getting an in-complete .iso file ?

or you've did some modification after you "md5checked"
those files?

waiting for your advise (before burning thoes images)

best regards,
Charles Fan

Hi, last night I downloaded the most recent Pollix ISO. Anyway, on my
own desktop machine I've been having a problem getting Pollix started.
I get the screen where you start Knoppix, but after that I just get a
blank screen, not even showing the text show Pollix starting up (I do
however believe that Pollix is running, but just not displaying
anything.) I've tried some different settings, such as changing the
resolution, the vsync and hsync, but it still didn't work. I was
wondering if you guys have any more suggestions.

Also, md5sum showed that the ISO was okay, and also I've taken the CD
to another computer and Pollix loaded fine (I'm using it right now in
fact). Suggestions?

One other thing: some of the screenshots on the Pollix have bad paths.
The first two or three are okay, pointing to the webserver, but the
other ones point to a file on a cdrom or something.

hi there,

I think you are having one of the following problems,
w/some solutions here:

try starting with one of the following boot
parameters, (or both, knoppix lang=en vga=normal
acpi=off):

for some display card with a LCD monitor, you need to
boot with: knoppix lang=en vga=normal

the ACPI support in kernel 2.6.1 used in
pollix20040309 are not yet compatiable with some
motherboard, you might try boot it with: knoppix
lang=en acpi=off

* about the md5sum, kendrew have already uploaded
another .ISO image again, so the checksum problem has
already been fixed on the previous night.

best regards,
Charles Fan.

hi there,

just forgot to ask, are you using a SCSI cd-rom on the
"problem machine" ? knoppix might not like all scsi
controllers, (but there should be a visible message)

also, if both parameters didn't work, you can still
try to copy the contents from the \boot\isolinux\ to
your harddrive and run linux.bat from dos mode (I mean
Real MS-DOS mode, not a dos windows inside M$-Win).

* a simple suggestion here for Kendrew, may be you can
modify the syslinux.cfg to include these 2 parameters
so pollix will easily boot on more PC's, they won't
use the new kernel 2.6.x hibernation features when
booting off a liveCD anyway

change: vga=791 ===> vga=normal

add: acpi=off

best regards,
Charles Fan

Okay, vga=normal made it so that the text on the next screen
appeared, but I'm still having problems.

I get the line "Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel."
Then nothing after that.

I'm running an intel hyperthreaded P4 2.8 GhZ on an Intel D865PERL
Socket 478 Motherboard.

Also using IDE not SCSI.

hi Dedmoroz,

the latest poolix made use of Linux kernel 2.6.1
(borrowed from knoppix 3.4 c't edition) which is not
yet compatiable with VMWare, you could try using
pollix20040206 or any earlier pollix edition if you
want to try it with VMWare.

btw, a newer knoppix 3.4 edition w/ kernel 2.6.3 is
expected to release with-in few weeks, you could wait
few more weeks for another newer release of pollix if
you want (I guess the newer release should boots under
VMWare)

best regards,

Hi all,

Thank Charles for pointing out the problem of starting Apache in
Pollix 20040309. I verified that, and it is due to some extra files
in the Apache configuration directory /etc/apache/conf.d/*.dpkg-dist.
Maybe these files were created here when some packages were updated
(mod-ssl?). A workaround would be simply removing them:
   sudo rm -f /etc/apache/conf.d/*.dpkg-dist
Then you should be able to start Apache.

For the "Nothing appearing" problem of javakah, it is likely to be
system/hardware dependent. Let's hope for a newer version of Knoppix
with better hardware support in 2.6 kernel to come out soon!

Unfortunely, there was a spam advertisement message from a "member"
of this group. I looked him up in the member list, but could not find
him. Very likely, he unsubscribed after sending the message. I hope
that it is just an independent and unfrequent event. In case this
happens again and gets serious, I'll take some measures such as
requesting approval for joining this group.

Regards,
Kendrew

hi dedmoroz,

there is no any standard ways to install pollix into a
harddrive, but there are "hardways" :-)

the easiest way is to install it over a FAT partition
(Fat 16 or Fat 32 doesn't metter) and copy all the
files from the CD-ROM into your harddrive, then type
the following commands under MS-DOS promnt (not inside
windows)

CD \BOOT\ISOLINUX
LINUX.BAT

you can type any *boot parameters needed after the
linux.bat commmand (without the keyword "knoppix")

*boot parameters can be found inside
\knoppix\knoppix-cheatcodes.txt file

but remember, your user directories are still stored
inside ramdisk even you boot pollix from a harddrive,
but you could modify the startup script knoppix.sh to
"mount" any drive / directories you want at boot time
if you like.

best regards,
Charles Fan

Dear Charles Fan,

thank you so much. This will solve the problem.

But will it not be reasonalbe to preserve the harddisk installation and
a persistent home-directory of Knoppix also in Pollix?

Are there special grounds to eliminate these scripts?

Thank a lot

hi there,

if you want to store you files into a harddrive, the
easy way is to use the command "mkpersistenthome" but
remember it will ask to use your whole harddrive
(might erase data) so remember to say no on the 1st
step.

there is also a way to boot under Ext 2 / Ext 3
partitions, see text below:

IF YOU ARE NOT EXPERIENCED WITH GNU/LINUX and LILO

THIS FAQ IS NOT FOR YOU !!!

http://www.knoppix.net/docs/index.php/HdBasedHowTo

*finally if you really like to try "restoring" pollix
into a full debian distrubtion, you could try booting
up with the CD, copying all the files from /KNOPPIX/
folder to a mounted harddrive, and setup all the links
by hand :) remember to install lilo.

best regards,

Charles Fan

I also wants to know :) lets gave some space for
kendrew to answer this,

:-P

may be the orgional knoppix installation script didn't
work on pollix, I didn't try that.

* you could also try downloading the orgional Knoppix,
install it using knoppix-installer, then cp all the
files from the /opt/ folder of pollix, copy the menu
of IceWM from /etc/X11/icewm, then start your local
Xwindow w/ IceWM and use it

:) well you might have to setup some environment
variables for the Java SDK.

best regards,
Charles Fan

Charles,

Thanks for the kind help, and for giving me the space
:)

Knoppix C't edition, on which Pollix 20040309 was
based, did not have a working installer. (Note:
actually C't can be installed after downloading some
package(s) from the web and following specific steps.
It was described in the forum of knoppix.net. Search
for more information there if you're interested.)

Regards,
Kendrew
