Just a quick note about a Forest Garden Design Course I'm leading over in northeastern north america... I'm moving towards making the curriculum and all the educational materials free and 'open-source', and will keep y'all posted as this develops. The idea is really to propagate this model of combined course-and-planting to establish community-supported forest gardens of serious scale all around the world.
In Peace,
Ethan
Dear Friends - [Please forward widely!!!]
I'm excited to let you know that AppleSeed Permaculture is opening the registration for our Forest Garden Design Course at Camp Epworth, High Falls, NY, on April 24-27.
Imagine a forest where every single tree is dripping with fresh fruits and ripening nuts. Every shrub is packed with delicious berries, and every other plantis a medicinal herb, culinary spice, or beautiful edibleflower. Tubers and root crops are abundant underfoot, gourmet mushroom logs sprout in the shade, and hardy kiwi vines climb back up throughthe layers of this multi-functional forest of food. During the 4-day (Thu-Fri-Sat-Sun) course, participants collaborate to learn how to design, establish, and maintain such gardens of Edible Forest Gardens of Eden.
We are asking a sliding scale fee of $350-650 for the entire course, with $25 discounts for early registration (before March 1st) and group registration ($25 off for each person in the group). Please pay what you can -- we use a sliding scale to accomodate as many people as possible. Some folks are able to invest more in the learning experience, and this is essential to balance out those who cannot. Currently we cannot offer work-trade, though limited "plant-trade" will be available -- look for an email in the coming weeks.
space. Checks should be made payable to AppleSeed Permaculture, and sent to 136 Lovers Lane, Greenfield, MA, 01301. Please email Ethan (eroland@...) to let us know you're planning to attend.
More details about the course:
• Accommodations: Indoor,dormitory-style housing and camping are both available on site for $5 per night. Some private rooms may be available for an additional price. There are several B&B-type accommodations in the immediate area.
• Families & Children: We would like to accommodate families with children at this course. If you are interested in this, please contact me directly and we'll work together based on your needs.
• Food: In order to keep our prices low, food will be partially potluck, and partially prepared on-site by a local cook. As much as possible will be organic and locally grown. Vegan, vegetarian, omnivorous, and carnivorous diets will all be deliciously accommodated.
I look forward to seeing you at the course!
Cheers,

Hello
Just joined the group so I thought I'd introduce myself.
I'm 44, female, living in North Wales.
I've done a fair bit of 'conventional' organic gardening, with raised
beds, crop rotation, home-made compost, etc.
The last twelve years were spent in running a micro-business, making
herbal ointments and natural cosmetics. It did pretty okay but I got
pretty bored of filling 1000s of jars n bottles. So I sold it to a
lovely couple who are carrying on the good work...and I'm now
studying full-time at Bangor University for an MSc in Conservation
and Land Management.
Anyway, this is where you lot come in...this summer, I'll be doing a
project for my dissertation. I'm interested in looking at the effect
that companion plants have on vegetable crops. There's plenty of
anecdotal evidence about the benefits, but I want to start to do
proper randomised, controlled trials to research these interactions.
So I'm looking for other people who have experience of using
companion plants and other interplanting methods. It would be nice to
have some people to bounce ideas off, and to ask for advice if I have
problems.
I got in touch with the permaculture association and they gave me
your contact details.
I'm looking forward to 'talking' to people who have open, enquiring
minds and share my interest in natural, ecological processes,
especially where crop production is concerned.
