Re: Updates from Marsha Hanzi, Brazil

Thanks for this advice - Dan Hemenway, Florida permaculturist also recommended to dig a pit and fill it with organic matter.  It makes sense, a sort of flat land swale.  Has anyone had any experience with a glie type mixture - cardboard and algae or other nitrogen element, that will become thick enough to slow the passing of nutrients and water through the sand?  From what you all are saying, the organic matter alone is enough with maybe some clay added - I'm trying to find locally available solutions and there is no clay around that I know of for at least 100 miles.  Some that I've talked to have had problems with the nutrients washing right into the sand, even with a thick layer of organic stuff.

We are currently trying mounds of organic matter on top of the sand with the cardboard/seaweed barrier (it was way easier than digging pits and we just wanted to get started), and so far, the veggies love it.  But we haven't hit the hot weather yet!   We're going to try some of your combos in our garden, Marsha!

Cory
