Walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, therefore it is a duck.

How do I distinguish the spam from the ham? The spam is the first
one, the ham is the second. The machine sending the spam tried again
5 minutes later. From the perspective of the MTA, the spam was sent
by something claiming to be "Microsoft Outlook Express" and behaving
very much like "Microsoft Outlook Express" would be expected to
behave - does it really matter what software was actually responsible
for sending the message? That is only a philosophical discussion at
best.

But back to the original topic - as you can see, the spam still gets
through with greylisting, because the software sending the spam is
intelligent enough to respond appropriately to my server faking a
temporary failure.

When I raise the greylist delay to half an hour (enough time for the
ISP to start getting complaints of spam originating from their
clients, and shut the client out), I start receiving complaints from
people whose mail servers send them messages saying, "I couldn't
deliver this message after half an hour, I'm still trying though."

I am attaching the logs of postfix + mailscanner (logs.txt) ,
fetchmail logs(fetchmailogs.txt) and also postconf -n output
(postfix.txt).

I am changed the user names and my domain name in these logs (for
security purpose) but I haven't changed anything apart from these
names.

Further details

Local domain name is sun.net
ISP/DNS Domain name is testing.com
catchall mailbox name is testing@...
Relay Host is mail.testing.com

In the logs (logs.txt) you can see there is a mail for user
test2,test3,test4,test5 and there is one wrong email id of test6 as
this user does not exist. Now all the legitimate users will get the
mails and the mail with the wrong mail id goes to the ISP server into
the catchall mailbox. The fetchmail downloads the mails from the ISP
server and then the problem starts again those mails are distributed
to the users test2,test3,test4,test5 and again the mail for the user
test6 goes to the catchall mailbox and the process continues until
this mail returned with the following error

----- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors -----
<test6@...>
(reason: 554 5.4.6 Too many hops)
     (expanded from: <test6@...>)

----- Transcript of session follows -----
554 5.4.6 Too many hops 27 (25 max): from <test1@...> via
61.11.28.71.bb-static.vsnl.net.in, to <test6@...>

I am not able to understand how to get rid of this problem. I hope
this time I am able to make you people understand my problem.

Please let me know if you need any further inputs.

Thanks & Regards

In their letter to Jorey they said, "...update your profile to include an
email address without the characters above." My thought is that if they're
going to accept an email address as a login ID, they should accept valid
email addresses. If the problem is in their CRM/database software, perhaps
they should consider their criteria for login IDs to make them something
other than email addresses (and effective way to do that would be to also
exclude '@' from login IDs). But it's not a perfect world, and I'm thinking
perhaps they've chosen the least troublesome path, which is to inconvenience
only the users who have email addresses with these "invalid" characters.

Hi all,

please have a look at the attached files for further info.

In short, I upgraded my linux box from SuSE 9.1 to 10.1 and the postfix
system stopped working. For what I could understand from the log files, it
should be something involving file permissions or user/group permissions
of some postfix daemons!? But I couldn't figure out what it is. For
instance, what intrigued me was that the local transport daemon works just
fine, the virtual one does not. It appears to me that they both have the
same entries in master.cf. Delivery to local recipients works.

Try:

	 # Use any valid name that is not equal to the domain
	 # in the server greeting. If localhost.shenzhenparty.com
	 # is listed in DNS (and resolves to 127.0.0.1), use that.
	 #
	 myhostname = mail.shenzhenparty.com
	 #
	 # Still, Use the domain to qualify unqualified email addresses.
	 #
	 myorigin = shenzhenparty.com

Use "127.0.0.1", or with Postfix 2.2 and later: "loopback-only" (without the
double quotes).

This is not constructive here. We can take our toys and go play in our
own sandbox too.

I am running an anti-spam/virus gateway built with postfix 2.2.5 and
amavisd-new 2.3.3 running on OpenBSD 3.8. Everything was working well
until several domains had their MX records turned in the server's
direction. I am now logging very many disconnections.

Jun 1 08:33:54 host postfix/smtpd[4431]: connect from
avk84-1-82-243-6-24.fbx.proxad.net[82.243.6.24]

Jun 1 08:33:54 host postfix/smtpd[4431]: disconnect from
avk84-1-82-243-6-24.fbx.proxad.net[82.243.6.24]

Why is it disconnecting so quickly?

My onboard pf firewall is only showing occasional blocked ICMP (type 3,
code 1).

I also cannot locally send a simple mail out from the server. I get
similar disconnect messages.

Here is the output to 'postconf -n':

reject_rbl_client bl.spamcop.net,
reject_rbl_client sbl.spamhaus.org
transport_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/transport
unknown_local_recipient_reject_code = 550

I tried restarting the server ('postfix relaod') and amavisd-new with
no luck.

I am accepting mail from other domnains using relay-domains, checking
for spam/virus, and then redirecting with transport.

The queue is quite full:

# postqueue -p | grep MAILER | wc -l
      176

I am running all software in chroot environment (/var/amavisd).

Subject: duplicate bcc'd messages through always_bcc
nathan@...

I send all received and sent messages to an auditing account through the
"always_bcc" directive and main.cf. Unfortunately, I always receive two
of every message in that audit account. I recognize that always_bcc is
designed to avoid mailer loops, so I have to imagine it's one of my
filters causing the messages to get processed twice, but I can't figure
out which one. I'm using postfix 2.1.1-1.17 (SLES9 RPM) and Amavis
(wrapping around clamav) and Spamassassin for virus and spam filtering,
respectively. I know there have been previous discussions of this sort
of problem, but none of the errant configurations were close enough to mine.

Here are, what I believe to be, the relevant lines from my master.cf:

What is /var/spool/postfix/maildrop? If it is an IMAP mailbox directory
tree, it should not reside inside /usr/postfix, and MUST not be owned by
the "postfix" user. Please fix this. The virtual_uid_maps = static:<uid>
value must not be the same as the uid of the "postfix" ($mail_owner) user.

Suse 10.1 comes with AppArmor, which has a profile for Postfix. For any
file access not defined in that profile you get "Operation not permitted".
Either switch AppArmor into learning mode to modify the profile or
deactivate AppArmor entirely.

Judging from the client name I wouldn't mind. (^-^)

Not too serious, it should be send within a few minutes once you solve
your problem.

This is your problem: you only have 5 concurrent smtpd processes. The
default is 100 for a reason. (^-^)

Change and issue "reload postfix". Then watch your mail log and the queue.

You are completely missing the point.
It isn't a case of "Looks Like", it's a case of what is on the other
end of the wire.

External address.
No reverse DNS.
Currently no DNSBLs of any consequence.

You might want to greylist it for a bit longer....
Bottom line is, mail servers and local addresses shouldn't be
greylisted.
But *unknown* connects should be for quite some time.
302 seconds doesn't cut it.
86400 seconds might.
This is, of course, only MHO.

That's your problem, Sir.

Yes.

Oh no, it's quite practical.
You see... sometimes, they make misteaks.
And those misteaks become a sign.

My apologies if I've posted here already, but still have an issue that's
bugging me...

Running postfix 2.2.4 on Mac OS/X. I've created a rbl_access file which
consists of

dcn.yahoo.com OK
scd.yahoo.com OK
mud.yahoo.com OK

I run postmap rbl_access , and it creates the rbl_access.db . I then add
to my main.cf:

smtpd_client_restrictions =
      check_client_access hash:/etc/postfix/rbl_access

I then get in my mail.log:

Jun 1 10:42:15 www postfix/smtpd[25475]: fatal: open database
/etc/postfix/rbl_access.db: Inappropriate file type or format
Jun 1 10:42:16 www postfix/master[56]: warning: process
/usr/libexec/postfix/smtpd pid 25475 exit status 1
Jun 1 10:42:16 www postfix/master[56]: warning:
/usr/libexec/postfix/smtpd: bad command startup -- throttling

I've tried check_client_access btree, same thing.

I've put both my rbl_access and rbl_access.db at
http://www.espphotography.com/rbl_access and
http://www.espphotography.com/rbl_access.db .

Any help greatly appreciated. I'm going nuts here. I'd love to add
bl.spamcop.net, but I need to whitelist yahoo groups.

Thanks.

What does "postconf -m" say about the supported map types?

Hm, I just noticed that several people have already deducted you have more
than one version of postfix on your system. What steps did you take to
resolve that situation? Just what is your situation at the moment at all?!?

This uses the default_database_type.

This uses hash:

Perhaps the default has been set to "btree"?

hi everybody:

im using virtual domains and want to deliver mails to maildirs on a openafs
volume. i have searched for a solution about the link()/unlink() vs rename()
problem on this and other mailing lists. i dont want to patch postfix, but i
really need a solution for this. Finally i've found that procmail already
uses rename() for maildir delivey so i wolud like to use it. the problem is
that i dont get how to set up virtual to pass mails to procmail for final
delivery.

for what ive readed i think that i should add an entry in master.cf for
procmail and add a transport_maps entry on main.cf.

if someone could give a hint or point me to the right docs i would be very
gratefull.

I'm pretty sure the mirror can handle the traffic if you prefer.

BTW, I figured out the test and added 127.0.0.2 to each zone with a
test text record.

The maildir protocol is not compatible with AFS. Changing the protocol
violates its reliability guarantees. Only local unix filesystems, or
correctly implemented NFS srevers are suitable for maildir.

Still trying to remove postfix via apt-get which is where I believe it was
also installed from..

If there's anyone who knows apt-get and willing to help me out offlist,
would be appreciated, or know of a good apt-get group.

Basically attempting to remove postfix via apt-get remove postfix, I get a

I'm sorry, but AFS is not suitable for this purpose. Working
around this with rename() is unacceptable, because it will
result in silent loss of email.

You can see what HELO string value Postfix will use with a couple of
commands. For example:

$ postconf smtp_helo_name
smtp_helo_name = $myhostname

$ postconf myhostname
myhostname = myhost.mydomain.com

	 : run; postconf smtp_helo_name

If that returns:

	 smtp_helo_name = $myhostname

then recurse with:

	 : run; postconf myhostname

If you change either in the "smtp unix" entry in master.cf, look at the
value there.

To log it, "debug_peer_list = 1.2.3.4", where 1.2.3.4 is the IP address
of some machine to which you are about to send a test message. Then reload,
and the HELO/EHLO name will be in the logs.
