As webmasters, we are all chasing customers. We are looking for
human visitors to come to our websites and to buy what we are
selling.

To serve our needs for targeted traffic --- potential customers
--- the search companies have begun to offer us a share of their
significant traffic through many paid advertising methods.

The most common advertising offer at the search engines is the
PPC (Pay-Per-Click) advertising model. There are also other
search advertising models such as CPM (Cost Per Thousand
Impressions) and Featured Listings.

In this article, we will look at the advantages and disadvantages
of each advertising method.

PPC (PAY-PER-CLICK) ADVERTISING MODEL

By far, PPC is currently the most popular advertising model. From
the buyer's perspective, it is usually the most expensive type of
advertising and the one that generates the most fear of fraud. In
fact, many experts suggest that click-fraud might be as high as
20 to 25% of all click-traffic.

Pay-Per-Click is exactly what it sounds like. The advertiser bids
on keywords and tells the advertising company that they will pay
X number of cents or dollars for every click that they receive to
their website through the PPC-provider's website.

Advertisers compete for position within the search results with
the highest bidder getting the best advertising spot at the top
of the results. The second highest bidder gets the #2 spot, etc.

Generally, Pay-Per-Click providers serve three listings on
the first page of search results. Only when there is strong
competition for a particular keyword term and a number of
advertisers vying for placement, will the PPC-provider show
results with more than three advertisers.

If you bid the minimum five cents per click (the standard for
most PPC systems), then it is possible that you might not see
your listing on page one or page two of the search results.
Let's face it; PPC providers are interested in making the most
money they can from the traffic they send to people. So, if one
advertiser is paying a dollar per click and you are only bidding
five cents a click, who do you think will receive the best
placement? Yep, the one-dollar per click advertiser will get
the most attention and the best placement, even if it requires
pushing your placement back to page three of the search results.

The top two PPC-providers are:

Other not-so-well-known providers of PPC traffic, in
alphabetical order, include:

The biggest advantage to these systems is that they serve large
pools of consumers online, and they let you target specific
search keywords.

The disadvantages are numerous. Those most often cited include:
the high cost of  bids for certain keywords, poor conversion
rates on purchased clicks, and click fraud (generally regarded
as people clicking your link just so they can get paid for it).

Personally, I have paid as high as a dollar per-click for a
service that sells for $35, and $20 in volume. I have spoken to
others who operate for-profit websites and have paid as much as
$2.50 per click on an average keyword. In some really competitive
markets, people pay as much as $30 per click.

If you use the Web-Professor bid tool to check keywords at
Overture ( http://web-professor.net/tools/bidstats/ ) and you
type in the keyword "mesothelioma", you'll find 30 bidders
vying for that term and a maximum bid of $29.88 per click! If
the maximum bidder converts traffic to sales at the national
average of 3%, then he or she is paying an average of $900 to
get one client! Insane, but true.

CPM (COST PER THOUSAND IMPRESSIONS) ADVERTISING MODEL

CPM advertising is most often associated with banner advertising,
but can now be purchased for text ads as well. This type of
advertising is available from many sources, including:

CPM advertising can be cheaper than PPC, but it fails to address
the effectiveness of your advertising copy. Before undertaking
a large CPM campaign, you need to be confident your advertising
copy will deliver results.

As with any other type of advertising, you need to track click-
through and conversion rates to determine the advertising copy
that is most effective for your business.

You also need to have a solid understanding of how many
impressions it will take to generate a visitor, and how many
visitors you will need to generate one sale. And, on the
backside, you will need to know what the average earnings from
your sales will be. With these stats in hand, you'll know how
much you can afford to pay for CPM advertising or any other type
of advertising.

Using Google Adwords, you can buy CPM advertising for as little
as $2 per thousand impressions. The one time I went that route,
thinking my advertising might be cheaper, I ended up dropping
$180 in three days with only one sale to show for my investment
-- utilizing the exact same ad that generated a 4% click-through
rate (CTR) in Google's PPC advertising system.

The major appeal of CPM advertising is its perceived low-cost,
with rates ranging between $2 - $3 per thousand impressions.

The major disadvantage to this type of advertising is that you
need a good handle on how well your advertising is performing.
Your advertising copy can make or break you. Additionally, you
need to keep an eye on your advertising budget. From first hand
experience, I can tell you that although CPM advertising can
appear inexpensive, it can in short order surpass the costs of
PPC advertising.

FEATURED LISTING ADVERTISING MODEL

Featured listings differ from the other two advertising models
in that you do not pay for "ad clicks" or "ad impressions".
With featured listings, your advertisement appears in the
purchased location for 30 days, 90 days, or one year.

Featured listings can be bought on individual websites and even
on networks of websites. Below are a few examples of advertising
networks that offer featured listings:

  * Geek Files ( http://www.geekfiles.com/advertising/ )

Geek Files offers various Featured Listing placement options with
ad rates ranging from $19 to $179 per month. You get two months
free if you buy advertising for a full year.

  * Aardvark Travel ( http://www.aardvarktravel.net/featured/ )

Aardvark Travel is a travel search engine. Featured listings
appear in a colored box between the top five listings and the
bottom five listings in the travel-related search results. There
is a $50 setup fee for each Featured Listing and a $10 per month
recurring charge for as long as you keep your listing active.
Aardvark claims featured listings generate 40 times more clicks
than any other listings on their pages.

  * The Independent Search Engine and Directory Network
( http://www.isedn.org/ )

The ISEDN offers a program that allows you to purchase Top Ten
exposure for your website(s) across their network of 200 plus
member websites.

The network is comprised of specialized search engines, search
directories, and article directories. Featured Listing placements
for specific keywords are displayed across the entire ISEDN
system.

The cost of a keyword term (the word or phrase associated with
the listing) is $12 for three months or $36 for 12 months. The
price drops for each additional 5 listings you purchase. If you
are buying in volume, discounts can be significant. For example,
the cost for 16 to 100 listings is $6 per listing for 3 months
and $18 per listing for 12 months.

The main drawback to the ISEDN program is that the network,
although large, does not yet have the traffic volume of the major
engines.

The major benefit, of course, is that you can buy a lot more bang
for your advertising dollars. Additionally, you can see your ads
appearing on pages in a position that will attract more attention
and click-through traffic to your website.

WHICH ADVERTISING MODEL IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

It really depends on your business model. More so, it depends on
your absolute click-through averages and your website conversion
rates.

Your advertising needs to cost you no more than what it earns for
you. Ideally, your advertising will cost less than it earns for
you.

Some businesses trade on the lifetime value of customers and are
willing to pay more to get customers than what they earn on their
first sale, but not all of us can afford to build a customer base
in the same way that Amazon built theirs.

If your advertising budget is small, your goal should be to make
every advertising dollar count. Grow your business to the point
where you might be able to afford some of the more expensive
advertising solutions. But then, if the lower-cost solutions
generate sales for you, why would you want to pay more?

  * the keywords will actually convert -- they will actually
result in increased sales.

Otherwise, it's really wasted time.

impressions (instead of just the old green bar), the Google tool
can really help with your keyword research.

And it's Free!

If you don't have an AdWords account, you can access the tool
independently (just Google: Google Keyword Research Tool).

Grabbing the Best Keywords for your Website Using Google's
Keyword Research Tool

Step 1 -- Put your keyword phrase or root keyword into the tool.
I suggest one phrase at a time, 1-4 words in length. Click: Get
Keyword ideas and wait for the results.

Another option is to click Website Content and let Google pull
suggestions from your website content.

Step 2 -- IMPORTANT, change the Match Type to Phrase, which adds
quotes to the keyword results. This makes the tool's impressions
more closely match organic search, ignoring the "loosey-goosey"
broad match phrases for AdWords.

And under the Show/Hide Columns make sure your settings display
Approx Avg Search Volume. (If you're marketing a seasonal
product or service you might change to a different setting.)

Step 3 -- Analyze the results. What we're all trying to find is
the low hanging fruit: the best balance of traffic volume, ease
to perform SEO and traffic that will likely convert.

I suggest targeting phrases that are at least 5,000 to 10,000
monthly average impressions. Conversely, keyword phrases with
very high monthly impressions may prove too competitive in
organic search. Find the best balance for your organic
optimization skills and for your industry.

If your sales goals require 200,000 monthly organic impressions
and you choose keyword search phrases with between 5,000 and
10,000 monthly impressions each, then you'll need between 20 to
40 keyword phrases to deliver you that 200,000 monthly
impressions.

Of course, as you discover opportune phrases that are offer
greater monthly impressions and that you're comfortable
optimizing for, that will lower the number of phrases needed to
reach your monthly goal.

Make your keyword list from this criteria. I like to copy and
paste into my email program.

And to determine the number of monthly impressions needed,
you'll need:

(1) good organic listing click-through rate data -- what
percentage of searchers will click on your listing? (and)

(2) conversion rate data either from your own website or for your
industry -- what percentage of your site visitors will BUY?

You will find an experienced Internet Marketing Consultant |
Coach who specializes in Keyword Research can help you formulate
a keyword list that will deliver BOTH the traffic and sales
conversions that you need.

Step 4 -- Evaluate the competing number of pages in organic
search from Google. Is this a number you're comfortable
optimizing for?

While you're on the SERPs looking over the search results, look
at the AdWords ads and the organic results.

Does your service or product sound like it belongs on this page,
for this keyword? Or, does it sound out of place?

And for a search phrase to be good, normally you'll want to see
several AdWords ads appearing for the search phrase.

Make your list from this criteria, setting aside any keyword
phrases from the previous step (at least for right now) where the
competition is too steep. Phrases that look good but with too
much competition, save for the future.

This brings up a good point: Keep good notes! Otherwise, you'll
come back for the next round of research and have to re-do
things. :-(

Step 5 -- Evaluate the phrases still on your list for their
likely commercial intention using the Microsoft Online Commercial
Intention Tool (Google it).

If you're using an SEO Consultant, make sure they use this tool
and evaluate commercial intent for the keywords you are
considering.

Now, this is a Microsoft tool...I use it and am glad for the
data, but I don't make decisions about any keyword phrase off
data from just one tool or from just one step in my process.

Having said that, I wouldn't select 15 phrases for optimization
where each of them shows there's not commercial intent.

Keep your list of phrases that still meet your criteria and move
onto the next step.

Step 6 -- Evaluate your remaining list in Google's Traffic
Estimator. What I look for is the relationship of average monthly
impressions to estimated daily click throughs in AdWords. Do they
make sense and suggest commercial intention?

If one phrase has twice the monthly impressions, but only 1/2 the
daily AdWords clicks, something may be wrong. You may want to
look closer.

The goal isn't just traffic, it's traffic that converts --
buys, sign up to your email list, calls or emails your company
and becomes a sales lead, etc.

When you complete these steps, you should have whittled your
initial keyword list down to the "lowest hanging fruit", the
most opportune phrases (easiest to rank well in) COMBINED with
the largest amount of quality traffic, COMBINED with traffic that
should convert.

The Windows Into Your Website

Keywords are the windows into your website. If you target the
wrong ones for your business, you won't have the traffic,
Internet sales or sales leads that you need.

If you're using an SEO Consultant to perform your work, make
sure they do it the correct way -- not the lazy way -- and
oversee their work. Your site, your responsibility!

If you're doing d-i-y Keyword Research, be really educated about
what you're doing OR your d-i-y effort could cost you more than
hiring a qualified company.

NOTE: Another option available from some Internet Marketing
Consultants today for those watching their budget is to offering
Coaching services. This is sort of a hybrid between the retail
price, full-service option and the go-it-alone, time consuming
do-it-yourself option.

Achieving the search engine ranking for your chosen keywords
doesn't have to be difficult or expensive if you follow my
formula. And if performed correctly, the end results will be
keywords that work for your business.

Many webmasters / online marketers make a common mistake when
they begin doing business online. Often times, people do the
processes necessary for their success - backwards. Rather than
starting at the beginning and working forwards, they start at the
end and work backwards. As a result, they waste more money and
resources, often breaking the back of their business, well before
they start to see any real success in their business.

In my years of helping online marketers promote their businesses,
I have seen business models that seemed to have all of the
elements necessary to ensure great success. And unfortunately, I
have seen many of these perfect business models fail miserably,
because their owners failed to honor their business with a
realistic promotional plan.

Putting The Cart Before The Horse

When people begin to promote their new business, this is where
most people begin to err.

Just recently, I spoke with an individual who started a business
in a pretty competitive field. I don't view heavy competition as
being a bad thing. In fact, I find that there are often enough
customers in any niche to support the additional competitors,
especially when a new competitor answers a need not served by the
current players.

The individual to whom I refer made his mistake by focusing 95%
of his advertising budget on Search Engine Optimization (SEO),
before he even knew what keywords would help him to be profitable
in his business! He has so far blown $9,500 of his $10,000 to
optimize his website for the search engines, and he still does
not know what keywords will drive traffic to his website, leading
to sales conversions for his website.

His "backwards" approach has left him with only $500 in his
budget, with little hope for his future. He now emails me 4-5
times a week, always in a state of utter panic for the prospect
of his future. All I can tell him is to be patient, since he has
to learn how to "bootstrap" his way to success, now that he has
no budget left to build strong and fast.

Test Your Copy First

Search Engine Optimization should "never" be a business' first
step in the promotion process. Although SEO can bring great
rewards, it can also be very expensive to implement. Look at it
this way. What good is search optimization if you have optimized
for the wrong keywords?

The first step in the promotion of any business should be focused
on attracting potential customers to one's website.

The marketer needs to put human eyeballs on the website, so that
they can test and tweak their sales copy for greater sales
conversion.

Until a website has seen several hundred visitors, the sales copy
should not be changed or tweaked. Sales copy should always be
tested against a large statistical group of visitors, in order to
ensure that the copy is given a fair and realistic test.

If the online marketer has a bit more money to start the process,
often the best spent money will be to hire a professional
copywriter to write the sales copy for the website. Professional
copywriters have a skill, and that skill is to create the words
that will drive people to buy what you are selling.

"Test Traffic" Is Important To The Process

Most Internet Marketing newbies are still focused on getting
those first few hundred visitors to their websites.

At this point, there are systems like Link Referral

business owner bring in a bit of traffic to their website. In a

The Law Of Attraction

While the traffic exchange systems mentioned above can send some
traffic to your website, you are not going to get rich
participating in those systems.

Once you have positioned your website to convert visitors to
buyers, it is time to start attracting a larger number of
visitors (potential customers) to your website.

There are a number of ways to do this, but two of the most
effective are: Article Marketing and Pay-Per-Click Advertising.

Article Marketing

Mark Silver recently produced an exceptional home study course
about writing articles that will help you be much more successful
in your article marketing activities

Just last week, a friend of mine told me that he has not promoted
his website in over a year, yet he noticed that his website has a
steady stream of traffic to it, from the three-dozen articles
that he wrote and distributed in 2006 and 2007. He said that his
ebook continues to produce new sales each and every month, and
the only thing he can really attribute those continuing sales to
is the articles that are available on the Internet that are
promoting his website and ebook.

Article marketing, in and of itself, is a promotional tool that
will allow a marketer to bring regular visitors to his or her
website, and if the website does its job well, then the website
will be able to convert those visitors to buyers. This is
important, because all businesses need money coming into a
website early, to ensure that the business can survive
financially, until the long-term "recipe for profit" can be
found and duplicated reliably.

Pay-Per-Click Advertising

Pay-Per-Click (PPC) advertising is a process where you bid on
keywords in the major search engines, through Google Adwords,
Yahoo Search Marketing, etc. You tell the search engine companies
what words you desire to bid on and how much you are willing to
pay for a visitor, and the highest bidders for that keyword
phrase will be shown above and to the right of the free results
in the search engine results pages.

Keyword research, utilizing systems like Word Tracker

NicheBot (http://thephantomwriters.com/nichebot) will enable you
to brainstorm keywords and get a good idea of which keywords
might be more profitable for your business.

By utilizing Google Analytics or Yahoo's Panama Full Analytics
(traffic analysis), an online marketer can follow a visitor from
the search engine to the marketer's sales page. Where this is
important is it enables an online marketer to uncover the
essential business knowledge of which "keywords" will bring
people into a website and help convert those visitors into
customers.

Essential SEO Knowledge

What one must keep in mind is that some keywords will deliver
visitors who will never buy, while other keywords will deliver
visitors who are extremely likely to buy. This one paragraph
holds within it the secret to a successful SEO strategy. This is
the essential knowledge that a marketer should have, before
engaging in any Search Engine Optimization campaign.

Like I said previously in this article, "Although SEO can bring
great rewards, it can also be very expensive to implement."

If you are going to spend a lot of money to optimize your website
for the search engines, doesn't it make much more sense to
target the keywords that will actually help you to earn back your
investment?

The Backwards Thinking

The backwards thinking I referred to in the beginning of this
article was the idea that many people put SEO in front of their
keyword research, keyword tracking and keyword conversion
statistics.

An industry I like to pick on is the travel industry. In order to
rank well for the solitary keyword "travel" in the search
engines will require an astronomical SEO budget. But most people
seeking travel information are looking for something just a bit
more specific, like: Disney vacations, Hawaii vacations, and
European travel.

So long as a keyword has been proven to convert visitors and
sales, then it makes sense to optimize for that keyword. But you
will never truly know which keywords will convert visitors and
sales, until you have invested some of your budget into
pay-per-click advertising and traffic analysis.

Once the necessary "keyword" knowledge is in hand, then the
marketer can make an investment into search engine optimization
for those keywords that can actually make them money, and with
good SEO deployment, the marketer can find that they can actually
capture a lot of the search engine traffic for specific keywords
through the search engines' free listings.

There are many companies on the Internet, who are promising that
if you give them lots of money, they will guarantee you top
rankings in the search engines. Buyer Beware!!!

Let Me Cut To The Chase

We all want to be on page one of Google's search engine results
(SERPs). After all, the higher our websites rank in Google, the
more money we will make. Every single one of us who have built
commercial websites are looking to make money and perhaps even to
get rich doing whatever it is we do at our websites.

But just because you and I both want to be on page one of
Google's SERPs, does not mean you or I will be on page one of
the results. Think about this objectively: no matter who we are
or what we do, we are typically challenging thousands or millions
of other web pages in our niche, for the keywords that we hope
will make us rich.

Understanding Search Engine Results

There are actually two sets of listings in the search engines.

  * On the left, you will see the "organic listings", which by
definition are free;

  * On the right hand side of the page in the search engine
results, you will find the "Pay-Per-Click listings" (PPC).
Placement in the PPC listings is an auction environment. The
highest bidder on a keyword will be in the top spot in the PPC
results. The second highest bid will hold the second spot, etc.

Comparing Organic and Pay-Per-Click Listings

Those who wish to rank in the organic search results will need to
employ Search Engine Optimization (SEO) techniques to improve his
or her rankings. There are literally hundreds of SEO companies,
who specialize in helping its clients climb in the "organic"
search result listings. But, SEO is a time-consuming process that
requires the efforts of specialists, who have actual knowledge
and skills in manipulating the search engine results. Here is
what Google has to say about this practice and its accompanying
industry:

Those who wish to employ paid search listings (PPC), which can
frequently be much cheaper than getting to the top of the organic
listings, will utilize one of the following services:

  * Google Adwords (http://adwords.google.com)

  * Yahoo Search Marketing (http://searchmarketing.yahoo.com)

  * 7 Search (http://7search.com/advertise/)

  * ISEDN is a bit different than the other search advertising
networks. First off, they do not charge a fee for each click.
Instead, they charge a quarterly placement fee. Also, instead of
representing one large search engine, their ads appear on 225+
smaller search engines. (http://www.isedn.org/)

Organic listings are best if you can get them, because they will
deliver free traffic to your website, sometimes for years. On the
other hand, given the cost of developing organic rankings, it
often makes more sense to pay a little bit each month for PPC
search traffic, rather than to pay thousands per month, sometimes
for years, just to break into the top few pages of the organic
search results.

Some Real-World Perspective

To get your website into page one of the organic search results,
can be a daunting process. To put this into perspective, I ran
some popular keywords through Google to see how many search
results would be found. Here we go:

  * travel - 1,410,000,000 results

  * HDTV televisions - 2,310,000

  * hybrid cars - 15,700,000

  * homes for sale - 96,000,000

  * real estate agents - 72,100,000

  * divorce attorneys - 1,640,000

  * cancer treatments - 3,610,000

With 1.4 Billion (with a "B", not a "M") pages vying for page
one results in Google for the word "travel", and 72 million
pages struggling to be seen in Google for the search term "real
estate agents", is it any wonder that the people in many
industries are struggling to be seen online?

If your competitors are struggling to be at the top of the search
results, so will you, unless you have extremely deep pockets.
With that having been said, there are some industries where
getting to page one will take an investment of millions, and then
there still are No Guarantees that you will succeed in your
endeavor.

There Is More Than One Way To Skin A Cat

At the end of each day, only ten websites will ever be on page
one of the organic search results. But, pay-per-click lets anyone
who has some money to spend, to break into page one of the search
results.

Depending on your bank account and your business model, SEO or
PPC may be the answer to getting people to visit your website and
to buy what you are selling. Depending on your keywords, the
ISEDN advertising opportunity may make more sense. I have used

for some of my own advertising.

But when all is said and done, what matters is for you to get
your advertising message in front of the people most likely to
buy what you are selling.

My Advertising Model Of Choice

In my years online, I have always turned to article marketing to
get my sales message in front of the people most likely to buy my
products or services.

Case in point. You are reading an article that I have written, to
speak to those people who are looking for ways to advertise their
business online. And at the end of this article, you will see
what is called a "resource box" or the "about the author
information". The resource box, at the end of this article, is
my advertisement for my business.

If you reach the end of this article and you read my resource
box, then I will have succeeded in getting you (someone in my
target audience) to read my advertisement. If you click the link
in the resource box, then I will have succeeded in getting a
potential client to visit my website. And finally, if you buy my
products or services, then my website will have accomplished its
purpose - to turn its visitors into buyers.

The interesting truth is - and few people will point this out to
you - if you click the link below and visit my website, then you
will have reached my website without actually passing through a
search engine to get to it. That is the beauty of article
marketing - you can use this advertising model to reach your
target audience, regardless of how well or how badly you rank in
the search engines.

In Conclusion

There is only one company who can guarantee you top rankings in
Google, and that company is Google. Although Google could
guarantee you top rankings in their search results, they won't
do it; not for any amount of money.

So when you see some other company making pie-in-the-sky promises
about how they can "guarantee your search engine rankings", get
a solid grasp on your wallet and run... the other way... fast...

register ringing and profits flowing. Most webmasters struggle
with exactly how to make that happen, until which time they
discover pay-per-click (PPC) advertising through the search
engines, utilizing the Google Adwords and Yahoo Search Marketing
programs.

As small business owners discover the powerful advantage of using
PPC advertising, they tend to spend a lot of time learning the
systems and figuring out how to use these top-tier
search-marketing tools to gain an advantage over their
competitors.

In the growth curve of any business, a day will come when the
business owner realizes that his or her personal time is best
spent taking care of other business processes. When this time
comes, the business owner will seek out other people to manage
his or her PPC advertising campaigns.

It is at this juncture when business owners will either hire an
in-house marketing person, or they will employ a third-party PPC
Management company to service their PPC advertising accounts.
This is where most businesses using pay-per-click advertising
start to go wrong.

In-House Marketing Staff

It is true that the business owner needs to get back to the tasks
that will make his or her business a true success. Part of the
growth cycle is to find people who can replicate certain business
processes, freeing the business owner to focus on other more
important areas like product or service fulfillment, customer
service, sales, human resources management, strategic planning
and financial management.

But, finding the right person or company to best represent the
needs of the business, in regards to PPC Management, can
frequently be a crap shoot at best.

Racing to the local university to find a recent marketing
graduate to bring into the company often results in opening a can
of worms. Most college grads, which leave college with a degree
in marketing, leave school with a very general understanding of
basic marketing principles, human psychology, consumer behavior,
advertising and promotion concepts, business finance,
organizational management and strategic planning.

Although most universities do a good job at preparing their
students for an entry-level job in marketing, few give their
students any hands-on training in specific advertising methods
that will be used in the real world, let alone with the
advertising methods that enable commerce to flow on the Internet.

Pulling a marketing person from another business is often as
problematic as hiring a recent college graduate. Unless one hires
from a company that has used PPC advertising for some time, one
might find the new hire possesses the same lack of hands-on
experience with PPC advertising methods as the college grad.

Don't get me wrong; marketing professionals are essential to the
overall implementation of a business' marketing plan. The
problem is that the process of managing pay-per-click advertising
campaigns really requires someone with very specialized
experience, skills and knowledge.

The Problem With Most PPC Management Companies

An alternative to hiring someone in house is to hire a
professional PPC Management company. The problem with most PPC
Management companies is the same problem most people have with
ordinary marketing companies.

  * First, typically there is that huge down payment to get the
job started;

  * Most marketing companies require an ironclad contract
committing the buyer to a six-month or twelve-month service
contract;

  * Marketing service companies typically require huge monthly
fees to maintain the contract (with most PPC Management
companies, these fees frequently run in the range of 10%-20% of
your monthly PPC spend);

  * The worst part about the typical Marketing company and PPC
Management company is that while they extract a high toll from
their customers, these companies seldom if ever offer any kind of
real guarantee of results for the work that they will do for you.

After being burned two or three times by Marketing or PPC
Management companies, most businesses start shopping for
performance-based service providers. Unfortunately, it is a
buyer-beware market out there.

PPC Management companies frequently suggest that their services
are "performance-based", but what they define as
"performance-based" is often different from what you or I would
define as truly "performance-based".

How to Identify a "True" Performance-Based PPC Management
Provider

When you are spending thousands of dollars per month on your
pay-per-click campaigns, there are certain things that you should
be able to expect from any PPC Management provider, who is
claiming to offer performance-based services. I will outline some
of the questions you should ask here:

  * How are your performance-based programs structured?

  * How will you measure performance improvements?

  * Will I have to pay any fees that are not directly linked to
performance improvements?

  * Will the compensation that I have to pay be in proportion to
the results you achieve for me?

  * Who will be working on my account? Is their compensation fixed
or is it derived from the real performance improvements they make
for my account?

  * How are you going to help me bring additional net profit to my
business?

  * What other clients have you worked with, and what kind of
successes have you achieved for them?

  * How long will I be required to keep my commitment to your
company, if you are not producing real measurable performance
improvements?

  * Do I have any recourse if you do not produce better results
than I can accomplish on my own, without your help?

The problem within the PPC Management industry is that most
management companies see themselves as advertising services
companies. They often lack the in house skill that it takes to
consistently produce significant performance improvements for
client accounts. Their only recourse to stay financially viable
is to offer fee-based services where client payment is guaranteed
but clients' results are not.

But, when a marketing management company adopts a true
"performance-based" stance and begins to see itself as a
partner in its client's future, then the management company will
have the appropriate incentives to take care of its client's
businesses in the same manner that it would take care of its own.

But never make the mistake of trying to define Google as just a
search engine or you will miss the true calling of this little
"Backrub", which was the original name used by its founders
Larry Page and Sergey Brin in 1996.   Google as we now know it
debuted in 1998. The name Google is a twist on the word Googol, a
number represented as 1 followed by 100 zeros. After everything
is said and done, it will more than likely refer to Google's net
worth - monetary or otherwise.

But forget search engine, for regardless of the founders'
intentions or company's objectives, Google is and has always
been the ultimate marketing machine. A massive marketing machine
that is just now gearing up and aiming for more and more lofty
heights. These heights seem to increase each day as Google
quietly rolls out program after program.

All noble ambitions aside, Google is the perfect marketing
machine. Google has no equals, and it is very close to getting a
stranglehold on the real power behind all marketing, which is
information.   Marketing is information. Information is
marketing.   Great marketing is supplying the right information
at the right time. Google more than any other entity on the web
or in the world, for that matter, fulfills this criterion at its
very core. Google is re-writing the book on how products are
marketed.

Google now has over 60% of the search traffic in the U.S., with a
staggering 7.3 billion monthly searches. In some countries
Google's search share is 80% or more. (Source: comScore) Those
webmasters who have number one keyword listings in all three of
the major search engines will know Google is the only game worth
playing because it delivers by far the most traffic.

While MSN and Yahoo! are still major players and are listed in
the top 5 traffic sites on the web, what most people don't
realize is that (unlike the other two) almost all of Google's
traffic is search traffic. >From a marketing perspective this is
extremely important since search traffic can deliver the highest
conversions (sales) mainly because it lets you capture the
potential customer or client when they are in the right mindset
to buy or to perform an action.   Obviously the key to successful
marketing is finding the buyers and clients for your products and
services. Google has forged itself as the ultimate "middleman"
as more and more of the world's business is performed in
cyberspace. And as everyone knows the "middleman" can reap huge
profits and hold enormous power.

Google, within its Adsense program, now offers CPA or Cost Per
Action where marketers can now receive larger returns for
displaying Google's links on their webpages. As any professional
marketer will tell you, you can get 10 times the revenue by
promoting affiliate products rather than the Adsense code on your
sites. But by adding CPA and other affiliate products within the
Adsense program, Google has made it more attractive to serious
online marketers.

Another step in that same direction is Google's acquisition of
DoubleClick, which includes the massive online affiliate
marketing network Performics. This means Google can now bring any
customer full-circle from initial search to checkout.

This may have dire consequences for large, lucrative third-party
affiliate networks like Commission Junction and LinkShare. Online
marketing and ecommerce is growing at a blistering rate, and the
company that controls the majority of these transactions will
wield enormous power. Will make the Medici look like paupers.

Those marketers who have managed to acquire number one listings
for their targeted keywords in Google's organic search are
smiling all the way to the bank. Mainly because Google commands
enormous trust with the surfing/buying public and this is
demonstrated through higher conversion rates. Likewise, those who
have mastered the Adsense and Adwords programs will know Google
is an excellent source of online income.

Most of the complaints against Google stems from its PageRank
system, which is supposed to be Google's version of online
democracy in action, a link is a vote for your page or content.
The higher the number of links, the higher your page will be
ranked in Google's index or SERPs - Search Engine Results
Pages.

So far Google has played fair, giving even the smallest webmaster
the opportunity to capture top Google listings if they produce
superior or popular content to the surfer. Some would even argue
Google's recent crackdown on sites offering paid-links can be
seen as evening the playing field for the small webmaster or
marketer who obviously doesn't have the economic clout or
resources to buy their way to the top of Google's listings.

Keyword rankings may be the ultimate equalizer and determiner of
online wealth. Those who can reach the top positions for their
chosen profitable niche keywords will have companies and service
providers lining up to do business with them. The fallout can
prove extremely lucrative for both parties.

However, few marketers or webmasters forget who is really holding
the cards; Google controls all steps along this marketing tunnel
with its search listings, Adwords and Adsense programs. The only
dark spot on the horizon could be monopoly issues, but Google
probably has enough reservoirs of public goodwill and deep enough
corporate pockets to squash any claims. As Google's dominance in
the search market becomes greater, Google will have control of
all segments of the online marketplace. Why should Google stop
there, why not go into Radio, TV... as the Internet gradually
mutates into a billion+ interactive TV channel universe (as many
believe it will) who do you think will be at control central
offering you a nice free remote?

Then there is also Google's planned broadband 700 MHz bid; one
can only speculate on Google's intentions. But Google must find
a way to transmit its information at no cost to its users. Could
it mean free wireless Internet for everyone on free Google boxes
or gadgets of some form, usable and accessible anywhere in the
world? Anything is possible because the stakes are so
astronomical and the marketing revenue so vast, Google must get
its information seamlessly and instantly to the end user at all
costs.

One can only guess at the enormity of the marketing power Google
will yield in coming years as the Internet slips out of its teen
years. But it won't be just marketing, the influence of Google
on all aspects of our lives will probably grow exponentially and
that influence will be huge.

For the true power of Google is only just now beginning to be
glimpsed; only as more and more of the Google pieces fall into
place will we truly fathom what life will be like in the Google
Age. Google's power, reverence and respect will no doubt be so
enormous it may lead some to make comparisons to a higher power
that has guided most of the life on this planet so far. Which
could also lead one to muse, at least they got the first two
letters correct.
