On Monday, April 25th, Agile Denver welcomes Ron Jeffries, experienced XP
author, trainer, coach, and practitioner. Ron is author of Extreme Programming
Adventures in C#, the senior author of Extreme Programming Installed, and was
the on-site XP coach for the original Extreme Programming project. This is Ron's
first visit to Agile Denver, and will be an opportunity not to be missed by
those old and new to Agile.
Ron has been involved with Extreme Programming since 1996, presenting numerous
talks and publishing papers on the topic. He is the proprietor of
www.XProgramming.com, a well-known source of XP information. Ron is an
independent consultant with Object Mentor, and was one of the creators, and a
featured instructor in Object Mentor's popular XP Immersion course.
Ron has advanced degrees in mathematics and computer science, and has been a
systems developer for more years than most of you have been alive. His teams
have built operating systems, compilers, relational database systems, and a
large range of applications. Ron's software products have produced revenue of
over half a billion dollars, and he wonders why he didn't get any of it.
The meeting will be held at the Qwest Auditorium in Downtown Denver. Doors open
at 6:00pm for networking and refreshments, and the meeting is open to software
professionals and students. Visit http://www.agiledenver.org/2005AprMeeting.php
for any additional meeting details.
On a related note, Ron may still be looking for a Little Help with

Hey all,
I've been offered a position at Microsoft, working with Peter. I'll be
out of here in the next week or so. It's my hope that at some point,
the group re-organizes and starts meeting again.
Good luck in everything, folks. :)

This is the CFP for the merged Agile Development Conference (ADC) and
XP Agile Universe (XPAU) conference:
Call for Participation - Agile 2005
July 24-29, 2005. Marriott Hotel, Denver, Colorado, USA.
http://www.agile2005.org
March 1: Submissions due for Tutorials and Workshops
March 15: Submissions due for Research Papers, Experience Reports, and
Educators' Symposium
Agile 2005 integrates the best features of the Agile Development
Conference and XP Agile Universe to create an exciting conference
about techniques and technologies, attitudes and policies, research
and experience, and the management and development sides of agile
software development. The agile approach focuses on delivering
business value early in the project lifetime and being able to
incorporate late-breaking requirements changes. It accentuates the
use of rich, informal communication channels and frequent delivery of
running, tested systems, while attending to the human component of
software development.
Agile 2005 gives attendees access to the latest thinking in this
domain, and bridges communities that rarely get a proper chance to
exchange ideas and thoughts. It brings together researchers from labs
and academia with executives, managers, and developers in the trenches
of software development. Agile 2005 is not about a single methodology
or approach, but rather provides a forum for the exchange of
information regarding all agile development technologies.
We invite submissions for the following:
- Research Papers
- Experience Reports
- Tutorials
- Workshops / Peer to Peer Sessions
- Educators' Symposium
Other conference activities include:
- Introduction to Agile (for Agile "newbies")
- Executive Summit
- Open Space

Quality Interactions: Building Effective Working Relationships
"...we have come to value:
Individuals and interactions over processes and tools."
- The Agile Manifesto
Our interactions can set off a positive spiral of increasing trust and openness
or a negative spiral of distrust and defensiveness. On Agile projects, our
success depends not just on technical skills, but on our abilities to build and
sustain strong, collaborative working relationships.
In this session, Esther will cover five tips for building, strengthening, and
maintaining quality working relationships with customers, peers, and others in
the workplace.
AGENDA:
6:00 - 6:30 PM Networking and refreshments
6:30 - 6:35 PM Announcements and door prize giveaways
6:35 - 7:45 PM Presentation
SPEAKER
Esther Derby facilitates team and management problem-solving. She helps teams
plan the work; stay on track (or get back on track); and capture what they've
learned so they can apply it to the next project. Esther focuses on creating
situations that encourage teams to create knowledge and increase their
capabilities to deliver software on time and with the desired quality. Esther
has special expertise in facilitating mid-project reviews and post project
retrospectives.
A frequent speaker and author on software management issues, Esther has
published articles in Software Development, Cutter IT Journal, STQE, and on
StickyMinds.com. Esther Derby is currently Technical Editor for Better Software
(formerly STQE) magazine.

I'd like to continue.
The meetings where we had a speaker/expert, such as security with
Keith or CI with Kris, but still had at least half Q&A and discussion
were particularly successful. I'd like to see more of that. Agile
modeling *might* have been interesting if we'd had an expert around.
I favor continuing with the midweek meetings, and I like Tuesdays. I'm

Despite our name, we could broaden the focus a bit (oxymoron? :) ).
Actually, we seem to end up discussing more general software
engineering and geek stuff at the meetings anyway.
> - Would moving the day help? We could do any weekday downtown, or
> maybe we could do a weekend and do it at somebody's house.
A day switch would probably be tough for me, but I'd try to work it
out. Given the right day (including weekends), I'd be up for hosting
some or all of the meetings at my home in Highlands Ranch (pending
spousal approval, of course), but I probably couldn't comfortably host
more than about 10.
> - Should we change the format, and try to get speakers in? Would any

Bringing in speakers would be fine by me, as long as about 2/3 of the
time were left open for discussion. The discussions and the
networking are the most beneficial parts of the meetings, to me.
I'd be willing to take a turn giving a talk, if there were anything
people wanted to hear from me :).
--
Steve Johnson
I'm a new participant, so actually things that you may consider 'done'
are things I might be interested in hearing about.
I'm afraid I'd have liked to attend last month, but December is a heck
of a month to schedule things with - plus, my sister was moving and I
had to help with that. :)
Beyond that, I'm too new to say.
--
John Fiala
We got very little interested for December, almost nobody responding
to the list and very few attendants. I'm hoping it was just because it
was December, and everybody was frazzled with holiday commitments.
Personally, I'd like to keep up the meetings, but if we've all decided
we can't do it, then so be it. I can always go to Keith's house and he
can thrash me at chess instead. :)
I'd like to open up the mailing list to ideas that would increase
attendance. A couple sort of directed questions:
- Richard mentioned that he figured all the "big topics" have been
covered. What do you think? Are there any 2.5 hour chat topics left of
interest?
- Would moving the day help? We could do any weekday downtown, or
maybe we could do a weekend and do it at somebody's house.
- Should we change the format, and try to get speakers in? Would any
of the members be interested in giving talks on specific topics?
Any other thoughts?

Dunno. Probably depends on the topic

Yes.

Sure, cuz no one would listen to me anyway :)

I'd be fine with recording, don't know if anyone would listen.

So, I've got this wacky idea. Tell me what you think.
I'd like to bring audio equipment to the meeting (microphones, mixing
board, recording device), then record the meeting and release it as an
MP3 file.
Some initial questions:
Do you think there's enough value in the things we utter to make it
worth listening to by random people?
If you missed a meeting, would you listen to the feed afterward?
Are you comfortable being recorded?

I would listen...
Once at least. If it sucked too bad, I probably wouldn't do it again. :)
