Review of Huw Price's Book: Time's Arrow and Archimedes' Point: New Directions
for the Physics of Time <http://prespacetime.com/index.php/pst/article/view/35>

Stephen P. Smith

Abstract

Price writes much on Gold's big bang and big crunch model of the universe, and
he writes on alternative views too. Having navigated safely from the time-flow
anthropocentrism, Price seems to have gotten himself snagged on a second
anthropocentrism that we are isolated from everything else. It is true we may
see ourselves as all knowing creatures that are competing for our survival in a
lifeless pool of chaos we call our universe. But there is no objective basis for
this belief. It is just a possible that we are the forgetful universe reflecting
hopelessly into the many egocentric bodies that are said to be all knowing. Are
we the inside system or the outside system? The question is symmetrical, and
cannot be answered. Then why do we answer it by projecting a Gold's universe
onto reality by demanding a separate big crunch future that is just as likely as
our big bang past? You can find this book at Amazon

The Modern Analysis of the Problem of Multisecting an Angle
<http://prespacetime.com/index.php/pst/article/view/34>

Temur Kalanov

Abstract

The work is devoted theoretical and practical analysis of an actual problem –
the problem of multisecting (in particular, trisecting) an angle, i.e. the
problem of division of a given arbitrary angle into the given set of equal parts
using only a compasses and an unmarked straightedge. General statement of a
problem is formulated. The mathematical analysis of the problem (within the
framework of the theories of similarity of triangles and of similarity of
concentric circles) and the logical analysis of the problem are proposed. It is
proved that practical solution of the problem of multisecting an arbitrary angle
with only a compasses and an unmarked straightedge is impossible because an arc
cannot be transformed to the straight line segment with a compasses and a
straightedge.

Review of David C. Stove's Book: Anything Goes: Origins of the Cult of
Scientific Irrationalism <http://prespacetime.com/index.php/pst/article/view/36>

Stephen P. Smith

Abstract

What are the implications of Stove's remarkable book? I will summarize my
observations. Induction is not the poison that Popper made it out to be.
Moreover, science need not be restricted to negative declarations as Popper
demanded, but may also seek evidence that affirms. Popper's falsification
principle continues to be important to promote error recognition, but it is very
partial. Popper's own failure in deductive reasoning shows his limitation.
Induction and deduction as a two-piece logic system is still too restrictive for
proper error recognition, in my view. You can find this book at Amazon

Review of Palle Yourgrau's Book: A World without Time: The Forgotten Legacy of
Godel and Einstein <http://prespacetime.com/index.php/pst/article/view/38>

Stephen P. Smith

Abstract

Yourgrau tells us that Godel was a philosophy-loving Platonist, and writes (page
23) on Platonists: "who like Plato believed in the objective, independent
existence of ideal, disembodied forms, of which the natural numbers are a
paradigm." Here truth discovered objectively becomes conflated with existence,
while the person that discovers truth fades in importance. Godel would have been
better served by resolving his issues with the "Dutch anti-Platonist,
intuitionist mathematician L.E.J. Brouwer," who also visited Vienna as Yourgrau
(page 29) indicates. Yourgrau (page 40) tells us that Einstein`s thinking
impacted the Vienna Circle, as well as Godel: "It was precisely the hegemony of
positivism, Godel wrote later, that allowed the members of the circle to mistake
Einstein for an ally and to underestimate the difficulty of rendering
mathematics empirically acceptable by reconstructing it as a system for formal
manipulation of signs. Einstein himself would awaken the positivists from their
misconceptions about the ultimate relationship between his thoughts and theirs.

Review of Steve Fuller's Book: Kuhn vs. Popper: The Struggle for the Soul of
Science (Revolutions in Science)
<http://prespacetime.com/index.php/pst/article/view/37>

Stephen P. Smith

Abstract

Fuller's book in interesting (worth four stars) because of the contrast made
between Kuhn and Popper found in the first half of the book. The confusion comes
later, but Fuller (page viii) shows little affection for Kuhn from the get-go,
and writes: "The more I have tired to make sense of Kuhn's words and deeds, the
more I have come to regard him as an intellectual coward who benefitted from his
elite institutional status in what remains the world's dominant society." Fuller
tells us that Kuhn won the class struggle, and Fuller's own emotionality betrays
his affection for Popper's libertarianism. You can find this book at Amazon

"Crackpots" Who Were Right II
<http://prespacetime.com/index.php/pst/article/view/40>

Philip E. Gibbs

Abstract

This is the second instalment of the series entitled "crackpots" who were right.
It is a collection of my postings at http://blog.vixra.org . The cases described
so far are just the tip of the iceberg. These are the scientists whose work
eventually led to a paradigm shift in their discipline and in several cases the
work was recognised with a Nobel Prize, though not always for the scientists who
made the initial breakthrough. For every scientists who makes such a major
advance in science there are many others who take smaller steps. Undoubtedly
there must be many other independent scientists whose work was so completely
rejected and ignored that it never garnered any recognition and has long been
forgotten. Science suffers through such neglect and that is why we think
viXra.org is so important.

Review of Ayn Rand's Book: Introduction to Objectivist Epistemology: Expanded
Second Edition <>

Stephen P. Smith

Abstract

According to Rand`s objectivism, deduction, induction, and concept-formation are
all that is needed to acquire objective knowledge. Rand`s "concept-formation" is
to first differentiate (or particularize) a set into units and then to integrate
(or generalize) over the set. Rand (1990, page 28) limits concepts to a
bi-polarity and writes: "The process of observing the facts of reality and of
integrating them into concepts is, in essence, a process of induction. The
process of subsuming new instances under a known concept is, in essence, a
process of deduction." Rand correctly connects induction and deduction with the
proclivities of generality and particularity, respectively, but in doing this
she turns concept-formation into an empty bi-polarity that holds nothing else
but induction and deduction. You can find this book at Amazon

Abstract

In May 2010, viXra.org has reached 1000 papers. It is encouraging to see that a
large number of submissions to viXra.org are now marked with comments indicating
that they are submitted to or even published in peer-reviewed journals. Indeed
the quality of many of the papers has surprised even us. There will always be
those who look for the worst paper they can find then hold it up as an
indication of how poor viXra.org is. Clearly they are missing the point. In
other news, If you need some money to help you carry out your research on
fundamental science questions you may be able to apply for a grant. The FQXi is
currently inviting proposals for grants on the "Nature of Time". Initial
proposal are required by June 14th 2010.

Physics as Infinite-dimensional Geometry and Generalized Number Theory: Basic
Visions
<http://prespacetime.com/index.php/pst/article/view/46>

Matti Pitkänen

Abstract

There are two basic approaches to the construction of quantum TGD. The first
approach relies on the vision of quantum physics as infinite-dimensional Kähler
geometry for the "world of classical worlds" identified as the space of
3-surfaces in certain 8-dimensional space. Essentially a generalization of the
Einstein's geometrization of physics program is in question. The second vision
is the identification of physics as a generalized number theory. This program
involves three threads: various p-adic physics and their fusion together with
real number based physics to a larger structure, the attempt to understand basic
physics in terms of classical number fields (in particular, identifying
associativity condition as the basic dynamical principle), and infinite primes
whose construction is formally analogous to a repeated second quantization of an
arithmetic quantum field theory. In this article brief summaries of physics as
infinite-dimensional geometry and generalized number theory are given to be
followed by more detailed articles.

Physics as Infinite-dimensional Geometry I: Identification of the Configuration
Space Kähler Function <http://prespacetime.com/index.php/pst/article/view/48>

Matti Pitkänen

Abstract

There are two basic approaches to quantum TGD. The first approach, which is
discussed in this article,is a generalization of Einstein's geometrization
program of physics to an infinite-dimensional context. Second approach is based
on the identification of physics as a generalized number theory. The first
approach relies on the vision of quantum physics as infinite-dimensional Kähler
geometry for the "world of classical worlds" (WCW) identified as the space of
3-surfaces in in certain 8-dimensional space. There are three separate
approaches to the challenge of constructing WCW Kähler geometry and spinor
structure. The first approach relies on direct guess of Kähler function. Second
approach relies on the construction of Kähler form and metric utilizing the huge
symmetries of the geometry needed to guarantee the mathematical existence of
Riemann connection. The third approach relies on the construction of spinor
structure based on the hypothesis that complexified WCW gamma matrices are
representable as linear combinations of fermionic oscillator operator for second
quantized free spinor fields at space-time surface and on the geometrization of
super-conformal symmetries in terms of WCW spinor structure.

In this article the proposal for Kähler function based on the requirement of
4-dimensional General Coordinate Invariance implying that its definition must
assign to a given 3-surface a unique space-time surface. Quantum classical
correspondence requires that this surface is a preferred extremal of some some
general coordinate invariant action, and so called Kähler action is a unique
candidate in this respect. The preferred extremal has interpretation as an
analog of Bohr orbit so that classical physics becomes and exact part of WCW
geometry and therefore also quantum physics.

Abstract

There are three separate approaches to the challenge of constructing WCW Kähler
geometry and spinor structure. The first approach relies on a direct guess of
Kähler function. Second approach relies on the construction of Kähler form and
metric utilizing the huge symmetries of the geometry needed to guarantee the
mathematical existence of Riemann connection. The third approach discussed in
this article relies on the construction of spinor structure based on the
hypothesis that complexified WCW gamma matrices are representable as linear
combinations of fermionic oscillator operator for the second quantized free
spinor fields at space-time surface and on the geometrization of super-conformal
symmetries in terms of spinor structure. This implies a geometrization of
fermionic statistics.

The basic philosophy is that at fundamental level the construction of WCW
geometry reduces to the second quantization of the induced spinor fields using
Dirac action. This assumption is parallel with the bosonic emergence stating
that all gauge bosons are pairs of fermion and anti-fermion at opposite throats
of wormhole contact. Vacuum function is identified as Dirac determinant and the
conjecture is that it reduces to the exponent of Kähler function. In order to
achieve internal consistency induced gamma matrices appearing in Dirac operator
must be replaced by the modified gamma matrices defined uniquely by Kähler
action and one must also assume that extremals of Kähler action are in question
so that the classical space-time dynamics reduces to a consistency condition.
This implies also super-symmetries and the fermionic oscillator algebra at
partonic 2-surfaces has interpretation as N = 1 generalization of space-time
super-symmetry algebra different however from standard SUSY algebra in that
Majorana spinors are not needed. This algebra serves as a building brick of
various super-conformal algebras involved.

In this article the construction of Kähler form and metric based on symmetries
is discussed. The basic vision is that WCW can be regarded as the space of
generalized Feynman diagrams with lines thickned to light-like 3-surfaces and
vertices identified as partonic 2-surfaces. In zero energy ontology the strong
form of General Coordinate Invariance (GCI) implies effective 2-dimensionality
and the basic objects are pairs partonic 2-surfaces X2 at opposite light-like
boundaries of causal diamonds (CDs).

Physics as Infinite-dimensional Geometry IV: Weak Form of Electric-Magnetic
Duality and Its Implications
<http://prespacetime.com/index.php/pst/article/view/51>

Matti Pitkänen

Abstract

The notion of electric-magnetic duality emerged already two decades ago in the
attempts to formulate the Kähler geometry of the "world of classical worlds".
Quite recently a considerable step of progress took place in the understanding
of this notion. This concept leads to the identification of the physical
particles as string like objects defined by magnetic charged wormhole throats
connected by magnetic flux tubes. The second end of the string contains particle
having electroweak isospin neutralizing that of elementary fermion and the size
scale of the string is electro-weak scale would be in question. Hence the
screening of electro-weak force takes place via weak confinement. This picture
generalizes to magnetic color confinement. Electric-magnetic duality leads also
to a detailed understanding of how TGD reduces to almost topological quantum
field theory. The condition that the theory reduces to almost topological QFT
and the hydrodynamical character of field equations leads to a detailed ansatz
for the general solution of field equations and also for the solutions of the
modified Dirac equation relying on the notion of Beltrami flow for which the
flow parameter associated with the flow lines defined by a conserved current
extends to a global coordinate. This makes the theory is in well-defined sense
completely integrable. Also Dirac determinant conjectured to represent Kähler
function can be calculated explicitly in terms of the geometric data
characterizing 3-surfaces.

Abstract

Physics as a generalized number theory program involves three threads: various
p-adic physics and their fusion together with real number based physics to a
larger structure, the attempt to understand basic physics in terms of classical
number fields, and infinite primes discussed in this article.

The construction of infinite primes is formally analogous to a repeated second
quantization of an arithmetic quantum field theory by taking the many particle
states of previous level elementary particles at the new level. Besides free
many particle states also the analogs of bound states appear. In the
representation in terms of polynomials the free states correspond to products of
first order polynomials with rational zeros. Bound states correspond to n-th
order polynomials with non-rational but algebraic zeros.

The construction can be generalized to classical number fields and their
complexifications obtained by adding a commuting imaginary unit. Special class
corresponds to hyper-octonionic primes for which the imaginary part of ordinary
octonion is multiplied by the commuting imaginary unit so that one obtains a
sub-space M8 with Minkowski signature of metric. Also in this case the basic
construction reduces to that for rational or complex rational primes and more
complex primes are obtained by acting using elements of the octonionic
automorphism group which preserve the complex octonionic integer property.

Abstract

p-adic physics and their fusion together with real number based physics to a
larger structure, the attempt to understand basic physics in terms of classical
number fields discussed in this article, and infinite primes whose construction
is formally analogous to a repeated second quantization of an arithmetic quantum

In this article the connection between standard model symmetries and classical
number fields is discussed. The basis vision is that the geometry of the
infinite-dimensional WCW ("world of classical worlds") is unique from its mere
existence. This leads to its identification as union of symmetric spaces whose
Kähler geometries are fixed by generalized conformal symmetries. This fixes
space-time dimension and the decomposition M4 X S and the idea is that the
symmetries of the Kähler manifold S make it somehow unique. The motivating
observations are that the dimensions of classical number fields are the
dimensions of partonic 2-surfaces, space-time surfaces, and imbedding space and
M8 can be identified as hyper-octonions- a sub-space of complexified octonions
obtained by adding a commuting imaginary unit. This stimulates some questions.

Abstract

Physics as a generalized number theory program involves three threads: various
p-adic physics and their fusion together with real number based physics to a
larger structure, the attempt to understand basic physics in terms of classical
number fields (in particular, identifying associativity condition as the basic
dynamical principle), and infinite primes whose construction is formally
analogous to a repeated second quantization of an arithmetic quantum field
theory. In this article p-adic physics and the technical problems relates to the
fusion of p-adic physics and real physics to a larger structure are discussed.

The basic technical problems relate to the notion of definite integral both at
space-time level, imbedding space level and the level of WCW (the "world of
classical worlds"). The expressibility of WCW as a union of symmetric spaces
leads to a proposal that harmonic analysis of symmetric spaces can be used to
define various integrals as sums over Fourier components. This leads to the
proposal the p-adic variant of symmetric space is obtained by a algebraic
continuation through a common intersection of these spaces, which basically
reduces to an algebraic variant of coset space involving algebraic extension of
rationals by roots of unity. This brings in the notion of angle measurement
resolution for given p-adic prime p. Also a proposal how one can complete the
discrete version of symmetric space to a continuous p-adic versions emerges and
means that each point is effectively replaced with the p-adic variant of the
symmetric space identifiable as a p-adic counterpart of the real discretization
volume so that a fractal p-adic variant of symmetric space results.

3x3 Unitary to Magic Matrix Transformations
<http://prespacetime.com/index.php/pst/article/view/58>

Philip E. Gibbs

Abstract

We prove that any 3x3 unitary matrix can be transformed to a magic matrix by
multiplying its rows and columns by phase factors. A magic matrix is defined as
one for which the sum of the elements in any row or column add to the same
value. This result is relevant to recent observations on particle mixing
matrices.

Block Universe – According to the Formalism d = v x t Space-time Is Timeless
<http://prespacetime.com/index.php/pst/article/view/60>

Amrit S. Sorli, Davide Fiscaletti, Dusan Klinar

Abstract

According to the formalism d=v*t fourth dimension of space-time is spatial too.
In formula X4=i*c*t symbol t represents numerical order of material change i.e.
motion running in a space. Flow of time is flow of numerical order of material
change that we measure with clocks. Fundamental unit of numerical order t0, t1,
t2...tn of material change is a Planck time tp. Numerical order of material
change tn-1 is "before" numerical order of material change tn equivalently as
natural number n-1 is "before" natural number n. Flow of physical time is a flow
of numerical order t0, t1, t2..tn of material change and runs in a timeless 4D
space.

Relativistic Effects of Relative Velocity of Material Change Start with Massive
Particles <http://prespacetime.com/index.php/pst/article/view/62>

Amrit S. Sorli

Abstract

Constancy of the light velocity in different inertial systems and areas of space
with different gravity implies that relativistic effects of relative velocity of
material change start with massive particles.

Interpretations of Quantum Mechanics: A Critical Survey
<http://prespacetime.com/index.php/pst/article/view/61>

Michele Caponigro

Abstract

This brief survey analyzes the epistemological implications about the role of
observer in the interpretations of Quantum Mechanics. As we know, the goal of
most interpretations of quantum mechanics is to avoid the apparent intrusion of
the observer into the measurement process. In the same time, there are implicit
and hidden assumptions about his role. In fact, most interpretations taking as
ontic level one of these fundamental concepts as information, physical law and
matter bring us to new problematical questions. We think, that no interpretation
of the quantum theory can avoid this intrusion until we do not clarify the
nature of observer.

"Crackpots" Who Were Right III
<http://prespacetime.com/index.php/pst/article/view/63>

Philip E. Gibbs

Abstract

This is the third instalment of the series entitled "crackpots" who were right.
It is a collection of my postings at http://blog.vixra.org. The scientists
covered are Stanley Prusiner, Georg Ohm, Robbert Goddard, Carl Woese, Galileo
Galilei, Barbara McClintock and J Harlen Bretz. These are the scientists whose
work eventually led to a paradigm shift in their discipline and in several cases
the work was recognised with a Nobel Prize, though not always for the scientists
who made the initial breakthrough.
