Bass Amp As Pa Sub

I was told that If I add a sub to my bands live Pa setup, it would fill
out our sound some. Could I use a small combo bass amp and hook it into
our sub out on the PA instead of getting an amp and a sub speaker.
Could I make the combo work? I am looking to minimize setup and cost. I
also have another small pa. Someone told me I could Get a pair of 16"
cabs or one 18" and hook up the pa to the sub out with a crossover to
the pa. Would I need a crossover If I used the bass amp?

Any Help would be appreciated
