German Project to Tackle Suicide Shows Success

FRANKFURT (Reuters Health) - Suicides in the German city of Nuremberg plunged
40% in the first 9 months of 2001 compared with a year ago, and at least part
of that success can be attributed to a research project designed to detect and
treat depression, according to the coordinator of the project.
The project, which aims to de-stigmatize depression and other psychiatric
illnesses through posters, public events and brochures, is one of several the
German government is funding in an effort to cut the country's high suicide
rate.
