Owing to the fact that I've only gotten 10 responses so far with the preferred timing split pretty evenly I'm going to leave it open for some more time and declare the time tomorrow afternoon.

Inconvenience regretted :(

Alright, so I've got two more responses so far and 10 sounds like a good enough number to start with.
Since most of the registrants voted for afternoon timings, I say we do this from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

If nothing, we can atleast meet and decide on the next meeting date/time/venue.

Thank you all and sorry for making this such a last minute event.
Hope to see you tomorrow.

well, right now, there is no agenda... :P

considering people haven't met in a while, I guess the most important discussion would be about how we can make this a more regular event.

Alright, so I guess the communication didn't get out early enough (or to enough people); my bad mostly, shouldn't have delayed the decision all the way to Friday. :S
Since next week in IndicThread and the holiday season starts after that, I guess we're going to have to plan this for early Jan.
I'm up to sending a new survey for the next meet, unless someone else has a venue that would be better suited/closer to everyone. :P

Sorry about this week though, hope we do better in Jan.

Saager,
I think:
  1. ThoughtWorks is fine as a venue.
  2. I don't think a democratic survey for date/time/place/topic is a very good idea.
  3. Just pick a topic, pick a date, announce it right away.

Dear all,

Apologies for a slightly off-topic post.

I am looking to get a CMS built using PHP / MySQL that can do the following:

1. All standard CMS functionality - ability to create pages, layouts, articles,
menus and assigning articles to pages
2. User role based authorisation - Admin, Editor, Author and User
3. Ability to change look and feel using Template
4. User registration
5. SEO
6. A good administration
etc.

In addition, the CMS should also support the following custom functionality:

1. Collect user demographic information when user registers (age, gender,
income, interest in various topics (it should be possible to target articles to
users based on their demographic and choice at the time of registration))
2. Ability to publish content online or via email or any other channel by having
checkboxes at the time of creation of content
3. Ability to sell stuff or collect donations
4. Ability to add forms and engage users in simple 2-3 page workflows
5. UTF8 database (to support multiple languages)
6. Ability to block users from downloading content without permission

I cannot use WordPress / Drupal / Joomla. I need a custom development.

If you are able to deliver such a product, please email me at
ashish@... with your quote, time required and terms. I also
need to see examples of your work.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best Regards,

Ashish.

I don't mean to be rude; and I'm just trying to understand where you're coming from so I have to ask-
  • why did you consider asking this question on a java mailing list?
  • is there a set of users who you know frequent this list that you're targeting?
  • did you feel that this community would provide you any specific outlook/perspective on this issue?
  • or are you just cross-posting?

Hi Ganesh,

If that was true, no one would be developing any new software as most business functionality already exists somewhere or the other. For example, SAP already has Sales, Distribution, Material Management, Production Planning, Financial Accounting, Controlling, etc. Yet you will find people developing these.

The reason I am looking for a new CMS is because based on my experience, nothing out there covers everything my client is looking for. Rather than bend my client's business around an existing software, I would like to get a software designed to suit their business model. Also, my own team is working to its capacity. Hence, I am looking to outsource this work.

I hope that I have not caused any offense and have responded to your query.

Best Regards,

Ashish.

Hello Ashish,
My question is why you need a custom development for this functionality which already supported by some of Content management system (Open source Community edition Alfresco). If you use Alfresco all the functionality you are looking for is already there beside it is best open Source Enterprise Content Management  system. You can customize your need on top of that why to reinvent the wheel.

I am just asking you since I am working on Alfresco and we are using all the functionality you are asking for with few of customization. I apologize if i am diverting your goals.

  • why did you consider asking this question on a java mailing list?
  • is there a set of users who you know frequent this list that you're targeting?
  • did you feel that this community would provide you any specific outlook/perspective on this issue?
  • or are you just cross-posting?

Dear all,

Apologies for a slightly off-topic post.

I am looking to get a CMS built using PHP / MySQL that can do the following:

1. All standard CMS functionality - ability to create pages, layouts, articles, menus and assigning articles to pages
2. User role based authorisation - Admin, Editor, Author and User
3. Ability to change look and feel using Template
4. User registration
5. SEO
6. A good administration
etc.

In addition, the CMS should also support the following custom functionality:

1. Collect user demographic information when user registers (age, gender, income, interest in various topics (it should be possible to target articles to users based on their demographic and choice at the time of registration))
2. Ability to publish content online or via email or any other channel by having checkboxes at the time of creation of content
3. Ability to sell stuff or collect donations
4. Ability to add forms and engage users in simple 2-3 page workflows
5. UTF8 database (to support multiple languages)
6. Ability to block users from downloading content without permission

I cannot use WordPress / Drupal / Joomla. I need a custom development.

If you are able to deliver such a product, please email me at ashish@... with your quote, time required and terms. I also need to see examples of your work.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best Regards,

Ashish.

This book is the definitive resource and a comprehensive guide to working with the JNI. Entirely up-to-date, the book offers a tutorial, a detailed description of JNI features and programming techniques, JNI design justifications, and the official specification for all JNI types and functions.

You will find coverage of important topics such as:

  • Writing native methods
  • Passing data types between the Java language and native programming languages
  • Embedding a Java virtual machine implementation in native applications
  • Leveraging legacy native libraries
  • Improving the efficiency and reliability of your code
An entire chapter is devoted to avoiding common traps and pitfalls. The book uses numerous examples to illustrate programming techniques that have proven to be effective.

=========================

We're happy to announce the third edition of DevCamp Bangalore -
DevCamp Bangalore 3 (http://bangalore.devcamp.in) on Saturday, 4th
September 2010.

The event will be sponsored & hosted by ThoughtWorks
(www.thoughtworks.com) at our office in Diamond District, Bangalore.
(view map: http://is.gd/ejWkd )

Like any BarCamp, registration is on the wiki and there is no registration fee.

DevCamp is an un-conference by the hackers*, for the hackers and of
the hackers. It's a species of BarCamp where anything a lover of
computers and technology would consider important or entertaining
goes. The first DevCamp took place a little over two years ago, and
we've always had a lot of fun being a part of this event; we're hoping
to keep that trend going with DCB3.

If you're planning to do a session at DCB3, do keep in mind the fact
that everyone at DevCamp is a hacker, a pro. Please assume a high
level of exposure and knowledge on the part of your audience, and
tailor your sessions accordingly. Avoid 'Hello World' and how-to
sessions which can be easily found on the net. First hand war stories,
in-depth analyses of topics, and live demos are best.
