Hi Friends,

Recently I shifted from Pune to Bangalore, so hired a P&M for
shiting. This was Transcend Packers and Movers, located in Koregaon

Our household things were badly damaged, consignment did not reach in
time, and above all one carton went missing.

Be cautious, during delivery noone came for unloading and unpacking,
it was a tough and bad experience for me and family, landing in
Bangalore.

I dont want anyone else should experience the same so be catious if
you plan to shift from Pune Say No to :

Transcend Packers and Movers, Koregaon, Pune

And, do suggest the same to your friends and relatives.

Dear all,

I have been working in UK for almost three and a half years. During this period, I changed 4 companies. Some because they went bankrupt while others because the work was not interesting or money was not good enough.

I would like to share my experiences with you.

I arrived in the UK on 1st August 2000.

My first company got me a project in January 2001.

At that time I realized that things move in the UK only from January till June. From June onwards, people start going on summer holidays. Things move a bit in October and November. However, right after that, Christmas fever kicks in. And again, nothing moves in December.

So, the best time to start looking for a job in the UK is January till about May.

There are various routes of coming to UK. However, if you wish to come here and work, you will need a Work Permit.

There are two kinds of Work Permits:

1. Employer Sponsored Work Permit - In this case, the employer will sponsor your work permit. However, to work for another company, you will need them to apply for a fresh Work Permit as Employer Sponsored Work Permits are Non-transferrable.
2. Highly Skilled Migrant Work Permit - The HSMP work permit is something that an individual can apply for by themselves. It does not tie them up to a specific employer. The differences between these two can be summarised as follow:

Employer Sponsored

1. Specific to Employer
2. Applied by the Employer
3. Copies of Documents are accepted
4. Based upon documentation provided by Employer

HSMP

1. Not specific to a particular Employer
2. Applied by the individual
3. All documents must be submitted in Original
4. Based on a points scheme

So if you are looking for a way to come to UK and then look for a job, HSMP Work Permit scheme is just what you are looking for.

To get an HSMP Work Permit, you need to get 65 points.

There are points awarded for age, education, experience, past earnings, and spouse's education and experience. Extra 50 points are awarded if you can come and work as a General Medical Practitioner.

For more information on HSMP Work Permit Scheme and the Points, visit the following link:

Further information and application forms are available at:

Please note that you will need either a Work Permit or a Spouse Visa (if your spouse is British) to work in the UK legally.

There is a shortage of General Medical Practitioners in the UK at present. So the HSMP scheme gives 50 points to anyone who can come and work in the UK as a General Practitioner.

Next is the part of finding a job in the UK.

Most jobs in UK are in the South-East, that is, in and around London. Most of my time in UK, I have been working in London.

However, that does not mean that there are no jobs elsewhere.

Following are some good websites if you are looking for a job in the UK:

JobServe and TotalJobs are my personal favourites.

Finding a job in the UK is more like a chicken and egg problem. Unless you have UK experience, UK employers are reluctant to employ you. However, as long as you have a valid visa to work, eventually you will find employment.

There are two kinds of employments on offer in the UK.

1. Permanent - You get a fixed salary + a package of benefits.
2. Contract - You get a good rate but almost no benefits that a permanent employee gets.

To apply for a job in UK, make sure your CV is not too long. Ideally, keep it between 2 and 4 pages.

The worst of both can be if you work as a permanent employee where your company employs for a specific contract and contracts you out. In that case, you neither have the peace of mind of a permanent job nor the money of a contracting job.

So you need to be careful and make sure of where you stand with your employer.

As an employee, you have certain rights and UK Government takes these rights very seriously.

For example, you are legally entitled to 4 weeks of paid holidays. But if your company states that it gives only 2 weeks, that part of the contract is held illegal.

For more on your rights as an employee, visit http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/.

Also, please note that different laws apply in England, Scotland, Wales and Northen Ireland.

All or most jobs in UK are advertised through Agencies.

Job Hunting can be a bit tricky at times in the UK. There are many instances where you might find a job advertisement and you may send in your CV to the agency.

However, it is possible that there may not be any job and the agency may call you back to find out following information from you:

1. Where are you working?
2. Is your company employing?
3. Who is the contact person for employment?
4. Where else has your CV been sent?
5. Where have you been for interview recently?
6. Who did you speak to there?

If you feel that something like this is happening, just hang up. After a couple of times, the person will get the message.

There are some genuine agencies too.

These are the ones that will really work with you, help you edit your CV to highlight certain points, keep you abrest of what is happening with the client, get you interviews and eventually, land you a job or contract.

If you are planning to work as a contractor, you need to be aware of laws such as IR35. You can get more information on it from Inland Revenue website at http://www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk/ir35/.

You can find more information on Income Tax and National Insurance deductions from Inland Revenue website at:

It took me a while to get my head around the calculations. So if you are looking for straight-forward calculator, visit:

www.i-resign.com is a good resource of various other information such as benefits, salary-packages, etc. as well.

In this newsletter, I have attempted to explain the process of Job-Hunting in the UK.

Please feel free to send me your questions.

In the next Newsletter - Living in the UK - I will attempt to explain UK important things that one needs to know about living in the UK.

Regards,

-Ashish.
