hi shalmali,
I think u r choosing an invalid date in the standard Rails date
helper (i.e. 31 of February).

The proposed solution is:
1) Intercept ArgumentError if the class is Date (and only Date)
2) If ArgumentError is raised, create a Time object using the same parameters
3) Convert it to Date

Sandip, AFAIK you'll just have to wait for the next edition of Obie's

Hi all, I'm forwarding you guys an invitation to a "Geek Night" by
ThoughtWorks Pune. The topic is Usability and UI Design. As Rails web
app developers, I guess being cognizant of "user experience" is a good
thing: it can help us develop more user-friendly interfaces, providing
more value to our end users.

Please do join in if you feel you can benefit from or even contribute
to this event (there are no fees but free food! *wink*).

---------------
Hi there!

As some of you may know, we at ThoughtWorks have been organizing
something called a 'Geek Night' for some time now. A Geek Night is an
informal gathering where we pick a hot technology topic and proceed to
discuss it and learn from each others' experience and perspectives.
The meeting takes about two hours inclusive of eating/drinking (soft
drinks only *wink*) and heckling the presenters. We generally plan it
on Saturday evenings so that our peers from other organizations can
join us too.

The topics for these Geek Nights may range from cutting-edge
technologies like JRuby to proven open source tools like Hibernate or
Spring. And sometimes we indulge in Code Jams where we get our laptops
in the room and go about solving a problem and discuss our solutions
till the food is over.

For our Geek Night this month we plan to bring up an interesting topic
  -  Usability Design

ThoughtWorks Pune is proud to host Abhijit Thosar - Usability Guru

Abhijit has over 20 years experience in the design and development of
products based on emerging technologies. He joined Human Factors
International, India in 2000 and worked as a project director on over

for Capgemini Pune. His other interests include designing accessible
systems and interfaces for members of the elderly and disabled
population as well as designing research for products and services for
upcoming markets. Abhijit is looking forward to an interactive session

Dear Sidu/Sandip,

The Rails Way for Rails 2 is out already at the start of this year.
Don't know if it is available in India yet but no reason why it
shouldn't. I have a copy purchased in the US. And yes, it is a
fantastically comprehensive book for Rails 2.0.

If you love video tutorials, which we do, I'd also recommend Peepcode:
http://peepcode.com/products/rest-for-rails-2

Video tutorials are like instant noodles. Easy to cook and eat when
you are hungry. :-)

Hello Guys,

Hope you all are fine and doing well at your corresponding organizations. Guys I
m stuck in some problems, Hope you will help me out.

Problem 1

I have a text field where I am entering some Email id separated by commas, Now
after hitting the enter button, I want that My individual Id's should save into
the table.

Like I am entering
someone@..., asdd@..., jskhfv@...

This should go into the table with different Id's

This is what I have written in my View
<input type="text" name="recipient_email" size="31">

and this is what I have written in my controller :
	 @recipients = params[:recipient_email].split(',')
	 for recipient in @recipients
		 @invite.user_id = current_user.id
		 @invite.recipient_email = @recipient
		 @invite.save
	 end

Problem 2

Guys there is a text field called username in one of my form and there is a link
in front of it called "Check Availability", Now what I want is if someone clicks
on check Availability it will check the table if the same username exists or not
I want this to be done through AJAX

Problem 3

In one of my page I am giving Email only and based on that I am creating a new
row into the users table, after that I m sending the link to the user based on
his/her given email address, clicking on the confirmation link will led user to
a page where user must have to give the username, password and confirm_password
fields.

Now the problem is validation for email is running successfully, but validations
for username, password and password_confirmation are not working. I am sending
you the code

MODEL user.rb
class User < ActiveRecord::Base

:on => :update
	 validates_confirmation_of :password, :if => :password_required?, :on => :update
	 before_save :encrypt_password

	 validates_presence_of :username, :on => :update
	 validates_uniqueness_of :username, :on => :update
end

CONTROLLER account_controller.rb

def create
	 @user = User.new(params[:user])
	 return unless request.post?
	 @user.save!
	 redirect_to :action => 'index'
	 flash[:notice] = "Your Account has been created an email has been sent to your
Email id, please confirm that and try to login again"
	 UserMailer::deliver_registration_confirmation(@user, @user.activation_code)
	 rescue ActiveRecord::RecordInvalid
	 render :action => 'index'
end

def update
	 @user = User.find(params[:id])
	 @user.update_attributes(params[:user])
	 return unless request.post?
	 self.current_user = @user
	 flash[:notice] = 'Your password has been saved'
	 redirect_to :controller => 'users', :action => 'dashboard'
	 rescue ActiveRecord::RecordInvalid
	 render :action => 'signup'
end

These are my three problems, please show me some way, I will be highly thankful

hey punit,

 I hope this will help you to solve you problem.

1.  use recipient instead of @recipient, in line
@invite.recipient_email = @recipient

2. Use 'link_to_remote' function for calling ajax function after clicking on the
link.

http://api.rubyonrails.org/classes/ActionView/Helpers/PrototypeHelper.html

This will help you for the syntax.

3.  hey have you written any method called password_required? in your model
file? If not then you should write this method.
If this method is missing, then your validations will fail. And if your password
field is mandetory, then just remove this statement, (:if =>
:password_required?) from your validations.

I hope your code will run with these changes.

Thanks,
Shalmali Kale

Hi

Can any one help me to solve this question?
Write the code for a simple checkers game. You only need to write the
code for the Piece and Board models. Implement a method named
validate_move(from,
to) for the Piece model that returns true or false depending on
whether the
move is valid. You are free to make assumptions; just indicate what
they are.

Thank you shalmali kale, for providing me such valuable information within this
short time.

My First problem is solved, and thank you for providing me the link for the
second problem, It will help me, I will solve my second problem based on this
url.

but my third problem is still not solved, I haven't created any method def
password_required? in my model user.rb, will you plss show me some stuff what to
write in this method, it will help me a lot.

Second thing is whenever I m writing @user.save on update method validations are
working, but after giving the correct information, rather than saving those
values into the DB validations are running again and again and when I am using
@user.update_attributes(params[:user]) no validations took place..

I want to know how to store the encrypted password manually into the database,
coz I am writing on my update method : @user.crypted_password =
params[:password], will it store the password in hashed format ?

There is one new issue I am describing here, hope you are not fustrating. I have
two models :
(1) Group : id, group_name, owner_id
(2) GroupMembership : id, group_id, user_id
(3) User, :has_many :groups

I have defined the relations b/w them, few of them I described above. Now in one
of my page I want to display All the groups created by the user, and below all
each and every group I want to display each and every user, so that user can
select multiple groups and users to send his/her personalised stuff.

I have written some queries to fetch the groups and users those queries are
working fine for me, means I am getting the correct list, now I want to know how
user will select multiple values coz values are coming from two different tables
and I want to show it in one page with multi-selecting option.

GROUP.RB
    has_many :group_memberships, :dependent => :destroy
    has_many :users, :through => :group_memberships
    belongs_to :owner, :class_name => "User", :foreign_key => 'owner_id'

GROUP MEMBERSHIP.RB
    belongs_to :user
    belongs_to :group

USER.RB
    has_many :owned_groups, :class_name => 'Group', :foreign_key =>
'owner_id'
    has_many :group_memberships
    has_many :groups, :through => :group_memberships

I would be highly thankful to you, for your help, if anyone else know how to
solve it, please help me I am looking forward for help from all of you.

Thanks,  Puneet Pandey

Hey Punit,

Find my reply below in red.

Hope this will help.

Thank you shalmali kale, for providing me such valuable information within this
short time.

My First problem is solved, and thank you for providing me the link for the
second problem, It will help me, I will solve my second problem based on this
url.

Thanks gr8

but my third problem is still not solved, I haven't created any method def
password_required? in my model user.rb, will you plss show me some stuff what to
write in this method, it will help me a lot.

def password_required?
     crypted_password.blank? or not password.blank?
  end
I think this method will help you. You should have crypted_password method in
your model file. Are you using acts_as_authenticated plugin for saving
password?? Or you are manually writting your code?? U shud use this plugin as
its really easy to use.

Second thing is whenever I m writing @user.save on update method validations are
working, but after giving the correct information, rather than saving those
values into the DB validations are running again and again and when I am using
@user.update_ attributes( params[:user] ) no validations took place..

I need to check your code for this. Not sure exactly what is causing this
problem.

I want to know how to store the encrypted password manually into the database,
coz I am writing on my update method : @user.crypted_ password =
params[:password] , will it store the password in hashed format ?

Nope this method wont just save crypted password in the database. Again use
authenticated plugin for the same.

GROUP.RB
     has_many :group_memberships, :dependent => :destroy
     has_many :users, :through => :group_memberships
     belongs_to :owner, :class_name => "User", :foreign_key => 'owner_id'

GROUP MEMBERSHIP.RB
     belongs_to :user
     belongs_to :group

USER.RB
     has_many :owned_groups, :class_name => 'Group', :foreign_key => 'owner_id'
     has_many :group_memberships
     has_many :groups, :through => :group_memberships

I would be highly thankful to you, for your help, if anyone else know how to
solve it, please help me I am looking forward for help from all of you.

Here I can see that, there is many to many relationship between users and groups
table. In rails we follow some coding lines. If two tables are having
many-to-many relationship btw them, then
we shud create third table.

e.g groups and users have many-to-many relationship btw them.
So third table will be

group_users which will contain ids of groups and users. As like your
groupmemnership table but change its name to group_users as per ruby's naming
convension.

Then automatically when u will say group.users, it will give you all users from
that group and if u say user.groups, it will show u all groups of that user.

Hope this will help. Do ask me if you need further clarifications.

Thanks,
Shalmali

Thanks, Puneet Pandey

hey punit,

  I hope this will help you to solve you problem.

1. use recipient instead of @recipient, in line

@invite.recipient_ email = @recipient

2. Use 'link_to_remote' function for calling ajax function after clicking on the
link.

http://api.rubyonra ils.org/classes/ ActionView/ Helpers/Prototyp eHelper.html

This will help you for the syntax.

3. hey have you written any method called password_required? in your model
file? If not then you should write this method.

If this method is missing, then your validations will fail. And if your password
field is mandetory, then just remove this statement, (:if => :password_required?
) from your validations.

I hope your code will run with these changes.

Thanks,

Shalmali Kale

Subject: [puneruby] Problems in some Issues

Hello Guys,

Hope you all are fine and doing well at your corresponding organizations. Guys I
m stuck in some problems, Hope you will help me out.

Problem 1

I have a text field where I am entering some Email id separated by commas, Now
after hitting the enter button, I want that My individual Id's should save into
the table.

Like I am entering

someone@gmail. com, asdd@hotmail. com, jskhfv@yahoo. com

This should go into the table with different Id's

This is what I have written in my View

<input type="text" name="recipient_ email" size="31">

and this is what I have written in my controller :

@recipients = params[:recipient_ email].split( ',')

for recipient in @recipients

@invite.user_ id = current_user. id

@invite.recipient_ email = @recipient

@invite.save

end

Problem 2

Guys there is a text field called username in one of my form and there is a link
in front of it called "Check Availability" , Now what I want is if someone
clicks on check Availability it will check the table if the same username exists
or not I want this to be done through AJAX

Problem 3

In one of my page I am giving Email only and based on that I am creating a new
row into the users table, after that I m sending the link to the user based on
his/her given email address, clicking on the confirmation link will led user to
a page where user must have to give the username, password and confirm_password
fields.

Now the problem is validation for email is running successfully, but validations
for username, password and password_confirmati on are not working. I am sending
you the code

MODEL user.rb

class User < ActiveRecord: :Base

attr_accessor :password

validates_presence_ of :email, :on => :create

validates_confirmat ion_of :password, :if => :password_required? , :on =>
:update

before_save :encrypt_password

validates_presence_ of :username, :on => :update

validates_uniquenes s_of :username, :on => :update

end

CONTROLLER account_controller. rb

def create

@user = User.new(params[ :user])

return unless request.post?

@user.save!

redirect_to :action => 'index'

flash[:notice] = "Your Account has been created an email has been sent to your
Email id, please confirm that and try to login again"

UserMailer:: deliver_registra tion_confirmatio n(@user, @user.activation_ code)

rescue ActiveRecord: :RecordInvalid

render :action => 'index'

end

def update

@user = User.find(params[ :id])

@user.update_ attributes( params[:user] )

return unless request.post?

self.current_ user = @user

flash[:notice] = 'Your password has been saved'

redirect_to :controller => 'users', :action => 'dashboard'

end

These are my three problems, please show me some way, I will be highly thankful

World-renowned Egyptologist Dr. Mark Lehner will speak at OOPSLA 2008

The OOPSLA conference attracts software technologists from around the world.
Here they will address the newest trends in improving programming languages,
refining the practice of software development, and exploring new programming
paradigms. One of the unique strengths of OOPSLA is the keynote speakers who
come from outside software development, but whose work offers insights that
can be of great interest to software development.

World-renowned Egyptologist Dr. Mark Lehner will discuss the infrastructure
that supported construction of the great pyramids at Giza. His presentation
focuses on issues critical to software development today -- the social and
architectural modularity of provisioning such a large workforce. Professor
Lucy Suchman, of Lancaster University, will discuss methods for making sense
of how people work together and using those observations to better support
their work. Professor Sonali Shah, from the University of Washington will
discuss the social structures that support innovation and entrepreneurship
today.

Other keynote speakers are leading figures in different parts of the software
development community. Rebecca Wirfs-Brock, developer of the
Responsibility-Driven Design approach to software development, Janos
Sztipanovits, the director of the Institute for Software Integrated Systems
(ISIS) at Vanderbilt University, and a leading expert on model-based design
for distributed and embedded software, and Mark Dominus, best-known for
"Higher-Order Perl", in which he adapted higher-order programming techniques
widely used in Lisp, Haskell, and SML for use in Perl.

OOPSLA 2008, sponsored by ACM SIGPLAN in cooperation with ACM
SIGSOFT, runs October 19-23, at the Nashville Convention Center, Nashville,

Hi Raja,

As you have pointed out, there are at least two applications involved
when using web services.

So, let's say that Rails app A has some data that Rails app B wants to
manipulate (read, update, etc).

In this case,
1. Rails app A will have to expose that data (which will actually be
your models) as resources.
2. Rails app B will have to consume those A's resources

For point 1, you'll have to add entries in your config/routes.rb similar to:
    map.resources :products

For point 2, you'll have to use ActiveResource to create models in B
that'll map to A's resources:
   class Product < ActiveResource::Base
     self.site = 'http://hostname_of_app_A:8080/'
   end

Could you explain your problem in a bit more detail?

Btw, for driving rails via rspec, you need to use RSpec on Rails:
http://rspec.info/documentation/rails/

RSpec on Rails used to be a plugin but is now available as a gem. We
have to use it so that rspec runs in the context of the rails app
instead of as standalone ruby programs (so that you can invoke
controller action methods using syntax like get :index, or assert
stuff on response.body, etc).

RSpec is really cool way to test-drive Rails applications. I've used
it a few times in ThoughtWorks projects.

Hello Guys,

Hope you all are well and doing good. I am stuck in one problem, hope anyone has
the solution of it. Below I m describing my issue.

I am using restful for my application. like once the user is logged in and is in
his home page the route I m using is:

map.home ':user/home', :controller => 'users', :action => 'home'
so it is giving me the output such as http://localhost:3000/puneet/home

This and many more routes are working prefectly fine on localhost, but when I
tried to upload this code into the staging, it is giving me some strange url
like http://mongrel/puneet/home (whenever I clicked on links), whereas it should
give me this http://mysitename.com/puneet/home.

I don't have mongrel server on staging. I have also tried to install mongrel but
no success i got. So later I un-installed it. Someone told me to assign a
variable in routes.rb
so at the bottom of routes.rb I added this line
SITE_URL = "mysitename.com"

Now when I try to send this url with each and every action specifically on
link_to tag I got this

-> mysitename.comhttp://mongrel/puneet/home

I tried various method like:
(1) <%= link_to 'Home', "#{SITE_URL}" + home_path(current_user.username) %>
but no solution :-(

I just want to replace mongrel with the actual name of my site. This has already
taken many days of mine. Hope you guys would be able to show me the right way.

I've never seen such a problem before. It'd be interesting to know
what causes such a thing.

However to get your site working in the meanwhile, why don't you go
back to using url_for() to generate your links instead of "named
routes" ("restful routes" are a different thing, not what you're
referring to here).

Eg:
<%= link_to 'Home', url_for(:controller => 'users', :action => 'home',
:user => current_user.username) %>

Note that your routes.rb can remain the same (as long as the default
route map.connect ':controller/:action/:id' is at the bottom).

That should solve your problem for the moment.
