Folks,

Rohan Kini (of bumsonthesaddle.com fame) and Harshal Hayatnagarkar from
the Tata Research Development and Design Centre, Pune are going to pair
on a ThoughtWorks webinar on building DSLs using Ruby. I suspect you
guys would be interested so I thought I'd let you know. Please feel free
to send this on to anyone who might me interested.

Register at http://www.thoughtworker.com/dslusingruby

Here's the blah blah, if you want more details:

We are delighted to invite you to an interactive Webinar on Domain
Specific Language (DSL) Construction using Ruby. DSLs are designed for
specific domains in contrast to a general-purpose language. Contrary to
what one might imagine, DSLs are everywhere - CSS, 'make' files, XSLT
and SQL being some of the popular examples.

Simplicity, ease of use, clean syntax and clear semantics are the
characteristics of a good DSL that enable the users to focus on the
problem. It is non-trivial to define, develop and maintain a DSL,
especially using traditional compiler techniques. The Ruby programming
language solves this issue to a certain extent.

Register here- > http://www.thoughtworker.com/dslusingruby

Topics Covered
- Fundamentals of DSLs.
- Introduction of Ruby features for writing DSLs.
- Writing a DSL - The speakers' experience, with examples.
- Challenges and Issues.

Speaker Profiles
Harshal Hayatnagarkar is a researcher at Tata Research Development and
Design Centre, Pune (a division of TCS) with many years of experience in
writing large-scale trading systems, DSLs and high performance machine
learning systems. Currently he is writing a DSL for information
visualization using Ruby.*

Rohan Kini is a Senior Developer at ThoughtWorks. He has been working
with Ruby since 2005 on one of the earliest Ruby projects in India. He
specializes in development of large-scale, web-based applications and
scripting languages.

**** Two lucky participants will win copies of the Refactoring book by
Martin Fowler.

Date - Wednesday, July 08, 2009

Time - 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Dear All,

We are a start-up company based out of the beautiful locales of Navi Mumbai. Our
area of focus is web and mobile development using open source software. We come
from one of the top management and engineering colleges in India and Asia.

We have been working with and for Fortune 500 companies and thought of bringing
our experience in starting a venture that would not only cater to clients but
also understand the human nature of software development. In that endeavour
coupled with our experience, we are working on Ruby and Ruby on Rails for web
development.

Enough of our flattery, now about you and what we are looking for:

- Rails experience - You should have developed minimum of 2-3 applications which
are on-line. Please share the URL's in cover letter. As for experience, we would
prefer developers from cross-platform experience, with minimum 2 years of
development experience with Ruby/Ruby on Rails.

- Ruby experience - You cannot be a Rails programmer if your Ruby in not strong.
If you play with DSL and use mixins every day, you will be a good select.

- Java_script - JQuery is must, if you know Mootools, there is a preference.

- Contribution to open source - If you have an open source project under your
belt, you are a natural choice.

We have been working with object oriented programming and Ruby for past couple
of years. Please apply only if you can answer how you would add value to the
company. Else, it will waste either of our time.

You can reach us at: jobs@...

Oh, didn't mention about salary and remuneration - Did we say that you will be
offered one of the best packages in town.

Best Regards,

Folks, we've just released CC.rb 1.4.0 with support for git, hg and bzr.
As always, CC.rb is easy to install, pleasant to use and simple to hack.

You can use it to continuously integrate a codebase in any language, not
just Ruby.

Live examples?

Get it off Github: http://github.com/thoughtworks/cruisecontrol.rb

CC.rb is released under the Apache 2.0 licence.

Hello everyone,

I have some good news - we've got a two day RubyConf India in the
planning stages, currently scheduled for sometime in Jan/Feb 2010. We've
spoken with Chad Fowler and he has confirmed that Ruby Central will help
us get this gig going. I've also got confirmation from Roy Singham, the
founder of ThoughtWorks that TW will back this conference as well.

More news as it comes, including requests for sponsors (yes, we will
need those) and requests for speakers to submit talk proposals, but to
begin with I'd like to solicit conference logos and home page templates
please; for examples, take a look at:
http://rubyconf.org/
http://www.larubyconf.com/
http://mtnwestrubyconf.org/2009/

If you are a graphic designer, or know one who'd be interested in
creating a RubyConf India logo, please do inform them.

I would request contributors to upload the images on the Bangalore RUG
files section at
http://groups.google.com/group/bangalorerug/files?hl=en-GB&upload=1 and
follow up with a mail linking to it.

Best,
Sidu.

HI Puneet,

you can use  periodically_call_remote   helper method to retrieve posts from
server and use RJS for effects(slideup,slidedown, highlighting etc.) while
rendering posts.

You can even try using server side push technologies (like comet) to send newly
added posts to browser.

Thanks,

Hey All,

First of all I would like to thank you for your fast and valuable responses..

I am stuck on another problem, describing you here,

I want to know how to work on JSON? there are not sufficient docs and
information available with which I can get something to work with.

Like below is the sample syntax:

def index
respond_to do |format|
      format.html
      format.json{
        @news = News.find(:all, :limit => 25, :order => 'id ASC')
        griddata = Hash.new
        griddata[:news] = @news.collect{|n| {:NewsID => n..id, :Title =>
n.news_title, :Description => n.description}}
        griddata[:totalCount] = News.count
        render :text => griddata.to_json()
      }
    end
end

or

def index
@users = User.find(:all)
respond_to do |format|
format.html
format.json{ render :json => @users.to_json }
end
end

What makes me stuck is what should be the views for the json object. Most of the
sites like gmail, cleartrip are getting json objects in their javascript
function available in the views and based on that performing all the
calculations.

Please let me know what to write in the views and in which format?

Cheers!!

Puneet,

There is no need of json view...

"render :json" will send json to the browser.

Hi Girish,

Thanks for your quick response. I can now have this conclusion with me. But few
things I would like to know that:
1. how to loop through this JSON variable?
2. I went through Cleartrip(http://cleartrip.com), in that they are getting the
whole set of results on the page and once user do any activity(like clicking on
the link) they are generating results very fast. How they are doing that? (When
I saw the source of the page, they are getting results in  b/w <script> tag.)
3. Is there any specific flow in order to use JSON in b/w <script> tag. But as
you said render :json does all the necessary things, then is it not required to
do anything in the views?

If possible please help me with some demo example, just a simpler one. I will be
thankful to you

Cheers!!

Puneet,

How are you doing?

1. json variable is just a ruby/javascript hash/array. Loop through it as
you would any hash/array.

2. I think, cleartrip makes ajax calls for everything and gets json in
response. This response is then converted in HTML using javascript in the
browser. This is just a guess.

3. render :json does all the things. But just in case you need views for
complex json outpu have a look at this
http://rozenbom.r09.railsrumble.com/tequila

Hope this helps.

Thanks,
Girish
