Hi,

C42 Engineering (http://c42.in) is a ten month old boutique Ruby and Rails
consultancy
based in Bangalore, formed by former ThoughtWorks employees to tap into the
nascent high-end offshore Ruby
and Agile consulting market. We're growing our practice and are looking to
hire talented, passionate programmers.
Please note that Ruby experience is NOT mandatory.

A little background about C42 Engineering:

* Find out more about us by looking at our open source - our github profile
is http://github.com/c42
* We have several years of production experience with Ruby
* We have years of experience using XP to successfully deliver complex
projects (Ruby as well as other platforms) at Fortune 1000 clients - in
other words, we don't just pay lip service to Agile/XP merely as a marketing
thing but actually practice it
* Our founding team, as individuals, are very active in promoting Ruby and
are extremely well connected in the community both in India as well as
internationally.

Here's a quick summary of what we are (and aren't) looking for:

* Rock solid OO skills (independent of any particular language)
* Passion for crafting and delivering high quality, aesthetically pleasing,
well specced code
* Prior Ruby experience is NOT required - we strongly favour pair
programming, so learning a new language will take no time at all

Nice to haves:

* Experience with Extreme Programming (XP), especially TDD
* Experience with multiple programming languages and paradigms
* Open source experience - linking to actual code written by you makes a big
difference to our evaluation
* 'The Pragmatic Programmer' is one of your favourite technical books and
you've read the 'SICP' twice over

If you're interested, please drop me a note off-list and I'll give you a
call and we can discuss things in greater detail.

Thanks,
Sidu.

Subject: [ANN] Client side HTTP caching support

Hello everyone,

I'm happy to say we've released Wrest 1.2.0 with caching support earlier
this week. We're looking for feedback and would greatly value any inputs you
may have.
To install the gem, just do `gem install wrest`.

Here's a quick example of how it works:

require 'rubygems'
require 'wrest'

Wrest.always_cache_using_hash!

uri =
'http://feeds.feedburner.com/RubyInside'.to_uri<http://feeds.feedburner.com/Ruby\
Inside%27.to_uri>

2.times do
   uri.get.deserialise(:xpath => '//entry/title/text()').each do |title|
     puts CGI.unescapeHTML(title.to_s)
   end
end

On the first pass through the loop you'll see logs printed to stdout that
look something like this:

<- (GET -15259369764874194591 -4573400353272501919)
http://feeds.feedburner.com:80/RubyInside<http://feeds.feedburner.com/RubyInside\
>
-> (GET -15259369764874194591 -4573400353272501919) 200 OK (59011 bytes
0.49s)

The second pass will look like this:

<- (GET -15259369764874194591 552545270667730897)
http://feeds.feedburner.com:80/RubyInside<http://feeds.feedburner.com/RubyInside\
>
-> (GET -15259369764874194591 552545270667730897) 304 Not Modified (0 bytes
0.33s)
The difference is that in the second case, the response had a status of 304
Not Modified and that the payload size is 0 bytes. The third line beginning
Do try it out and let us know how it works for you.

AFAIK this is the only RFC 2616 based Ruby library with memcached based
caching support on the client side. For more info, please take a look at the
following links:

Hi Sidu,
This is pretty cool. I'll give it a shot.

However, I am curious to know the reason for building Wrest when you have
Rack-cache (http://rtomayko.github.com/rack-cache/)
Are they comparable or were you building this in parallel? :)

Rack-cache enables server side RFC2616 caching support while Wrest
does client side caching. The two are complementary.

Typical REST architectures benefit from caching on both edges, so this
feature was added because we need client caching for our own app-dev
and couldn't find anything that did it.

Best,
Sidu.

A quick correction - the dates are 28th and 29th May, not 29th and
30th (thanks Satish).

Hello everyone,

I'm happy to say RubyConf India 2011 is starting to shape up. Like
last year, it will be supported by RubyCentral and the ITT and the
organisation and logistics will be handled by ThoughtWorks India. For
regular updates, please follow @rubyconfindia on Twitter.

We are currently doing the basic set-up for the event, most
importantly finalising the dates. The proposed date is currently 29th
and 30th May, 2011. What we need to know is if this date conflicts
with another (Ruby or similar) conference or if it is inconvenient for
any other reason.

We're looking forward to your feedback so we can settle on suitable dates.

Thanks!
Sidu.

It does clash with the EuRuKo 2011 - http://lanyrd.com/2011/euruko/ but does not
matter.

Hey Satish,

Yeah, Rohit Arondekar had pointed this out to me - I guess we'll have to
check how many (if any) of the international speakers are planning to go to
euruko. If not, then we should be all right.

I'll keep everyone posted as we figure this out.

Best,
Sidu.

Rajesh,

Thanks for the info.We have finalized MongoDB because of a particular
problem..but my question is when I am using MongoDB.should I store
everything into Mongo or should I put in some parts into Mongo and rest into
MYSQL.

E.g. Users -> Goes into Mongo as they are very highly used in the site

Activity --> Goes into Mongo as they are very highly used in the site

Messages --> Should this also be in Mongo or can move to MYSQL?

Invitations --> Should this go into mongo or move to mysql?

Basically is it good to mix match models in Mongo and MYSQL or its better to
have just one database stuff.i.e. stay with only Mongo or stay with only
MYSQL

Your inputs.

Thanks and Regards

Hi Satish,

If you can give a brief overview of what you intend to achieve it might be
easier for others to pitch-in with suggestions.

We do use MongoDB extensively and it does have it's strength for modeling
location aware applications, but the database itself is going through quite
number of changes with respect to sharding & replication.

I would suggest you do a quick POC on both the databases and pick an
appropriate solution.
