Well, Kanarese crosswords seem to work by aksharas - example at

. Unfortunately, you have to install a hack font (Baraha Kan New,
file brhkannw.ttf, available from
http://www.dharwad.com/nimmaputa/#kannada ) to slot the answers into
the grid.
