Hi
I have discovered recently that it is possible to use the QX3 without using
the QX3 software.
I have done it two different ways. First, if you have photoshop (PS) you
can probably access the QX3 directly from there. Use File | Import. It
should list the QX3 as a source. The interface is much simpler than the QX3
software and there is no option to control the light level.
Secondly, there is a very good graphics program called Irfanview (IR) -
free from the developer (google will find it for you). In this case you
first have to use File | Select Twain source, then highlight the QX3 entry,
then click the Select button. Now when you use File | Acquire you get an
image from the QX3. The interface is the same as for Photoshop.
The QX3 software does some pre-processing of the information from the
microscope. The original image is 352 x 288 pixels. The QX3 software uses
only the middle 320 x 240 pixels, which it enlarges to 512 x 384 pixels.
Both PS and IR collect the full 352 x 288 pixels. To get an equivalent
sized picture, the same effective magnification you have with the QX3
software, you have to resize the image collected by IR or PS - set the
width to 563 pixels (^R to resize in IR).
I have found the resulting images sharper than those obtained by the QX3
software.
