Excuse to give those who see you buying food for coonies: "I'm involved

At which point the listener may say..."Cool! What species?"

My answer: "Any species in danger of losing their natural habitats."

That usually suffices any curiosity and people typically don't want to

Ok...just wanted to post a quick "BE CAREFUL" note to everyone!  It's that time of year when hormones start raging and some of our sweet little visitors may become aggressive and act quite differently than we're used to!

Things to watch for:
    wiping feet motions
"huffing", snorting, any sound that doesn't seem typical to you
lunges toward you or anycoon else.
    tail "helicoptering"
the threatening posturing (butt up high...head down low...ears laid back)
any aggressive behavior that is not typical of that coonie.

Even the sweetest little 8 month old can turn into a monster this time of year....but they can't help it.  Just be careful going out amongst coonie groups and (if you know who's who) males.  If someone starts acting aggressive, avoidance is the best idea!

Sometimes there is no warning...as one rehabber said today on another board... "No there is absolutely NO WARNING, no noises, or even body language, suddenly you are being eaten alive.  Being nice one minute and the next trying to what seems, kill you.  Haven't experienced such rage."  She's wintering a pair of siblings she's been raising since their mom got killed and they were brought to her.  (They are not ready for release yet and now must stay with her until Spring)

For anyone *new* to these "Backyard Buffets", you're likely to hear and see quite a few battles.  They sound terrible - like something from a nightmare - but don't try to interfere!!  This is one of those "hard to take" nature-things it's going to happen whether it's in our yards or 5 miles away.  Just trust that the coonies will manage and will work things out their own way.

Remember, these guys can rip a large dog apart if they really want to....mating season can bring all kinds of battles and extreme grumpiness.

Just be careful out there!

Thank you for the warning!

As you all probably know, I had started handfeeding this bunch coming up to my
porch and was a little concerned because they seemed to be snapping at the food
in my hands. I was going to back off the handfeeding, but I still sat on the
porch and the kits would still come up and reach for peanuts. I am glad to
report that after a couple months of having them reach up for the food and also
having them get used to my hand giving them the peanuts, the girls have calmed
down considerably and no longer snap for food. They very trustingly reach out
their paws and gently take the peanuts from my hands, BUT.....after reading
Kelly's warning here, I think I will continue to allow them to reach up for
anything they want, but just not let my hands come close to anything but their
little velvety paws. I had no idea raccoons could get this hormonal and I will
be doubly careful in the next couple of month when I feed them.

My guys have another way of letting me know they're here. I leave a little cat
food in the bowl outside with the cat water dish (a large glass dish) and when
the raccoons show up, they start playing in the water and thumping the dish
around. Now I think they're doing that just to let me know they want something
to eat.

I wish I could get a few more raccoons at my place. I know there's several
families out there, but no one except my original mother and her two kits have
been showing up for months. Occasionally, a large male wanders in, but not on a
regular basis.

I was so touched the other night. Mine had bee showing up between 4 and 6 pm
now (tonight they were here at 3:45!). I was late home one night last week when
it was pouring rain and I didn't expect to see them until later because of the
rain. Imagine my surprise when I got home and three soaking wet raccoons came
down from the tree to greet me.

I'm surprised they don't mind the rain that much - I guess their coats just
keep them pretty dry, although when they get really wet, I've discovered that
half a raccoon is just hair anyway. My yard is at the bottom of a slope, which
means that when it rains and you dig a hole in my yard, water will bubble out of
the hole and across the ground. I was so careful when it started raining the
first time to avoid the water when I threw the food out, and then the first
thing the little furbutts did was wade into the water that was already there and
then dig to create more of it. *rolls eyes*

I was going to say, I don't feed mine all they can eat either. Number one, I'm
on unemployment and really can't afford to do that and two, I'm only renting and
I may have to move some day. I'd like mine to be as self sufficient as possible
too because of this. Still, I know mine are getting spoiled. After eating, if it
isn't raining, they crawl up in the tree and sleep for a while. Shy likes to get
herself on the roof of my trailer - the other night, Sissy and Mama were out in
the yard and I threw them each a peanut and then looked up to see Shy's little
face peering at me from the roof of the trailer. I was on my porch, so the top
wasn't very too high up and I couldn't resist. I held her peanut up to her and
she reached her little paw down and took it from me. Now that's spoiled!

husband has commented about how much money we're spending on food for just the
few we get. Does anyone want to admit how much they spend monthly? I think I'm
probably not spending near as much as anyone else, since I try to limit feeding
just the momma & 3 kits, but occasionally I will put something out for the
occasional roving raccoon or two. Now that her kits are as big as her, they
want a lot more food.
>

named this momma, Growley. She always growls at me if I get to close to her.
She doesn't care how close I get to her babies though. She and Mamasita have
gone at it at least once and she's gone after another raccoon or two who was
here when she and her crew showed up. Growley is a very aggressive momma and I
think she's run Mamasita out of the neighborhood. The other night I knew for
sure it wasn't Mama and her babies because after they would eat, they just about
always all go to this one area of the yard and nape for a couple of hours. Two
of them like to snuggle into a tree stump. Growley is also sneaky. For the
longest time I couldn't figure out what was going on because I kept thinking it
was Mamasita and two of her babies coming to the door, while a third one hid up
in the landscaping. It was such odd behavior and it didn't make sense. I
finally figured it out.

listening to them cry?) and act all pathetic and hungry while she hides behind a
tree or bush. As soon as I go outside to take food, she comes out of hiding and
joins them. Has anyone ever seen anything like this before?

I had to smile at your cat dish story!  I have a small water bucket on our upper deck for Vinnie the yard cat.  The bucket is one of those that you get at the grocery store with ice cream in it.  (no, I didn't share the ice cream! )  This past Spring, the raccoon kits would play in the water, stand in the bucket (how they got all 4 legs in there I'll never know!!), and soon decided it was fun to tip it over, spilling the water, and batting the bucket around on the deck.  So... I found a big ol' rock to put in the bottom of the bucket to weigh it down a bit.  That seemed to work for a while....until one of the bigger coonies decided he didn't like the rock in the bucket and would try to pull the rock out of the bucket!  We'd be watching TV or a movie (over the internet) and we'd hear  * thud *      ** Thud **      ***  THUD  ***  coming from the deck as "Mr. Anti-Rock" would lift the rock a bit and drop it back in the bucket.  Over and over and over.  So... I took the rock out which resulted in even the smaller kits trying to play with the rock and we'd hear the thuds in addition to the rock rolling sounds!  LOL!!   Persistant critters!!  :)

As far as getting more raccoons...... just wait!  Word WILL spread in the coonie world and you'll end up with more and more visitors!  Especially in the fall/early winter when they're trying to bulk up.  I'm running "Backyard Traffic Control" most nights now... trying to shuffle one coonie family to one spot of the yard, another family to another spot, the males off to the sides.... all in my little attempt to get everyone out there to get along and not fuss TOO much amongst themselves.  One family (Little Momma & kits) now know the drill and they'll stay in "their spot" and wait while I make the rounds and get everyone situated and fed.  Then I can go to their spot and feed them.  It's pretty comical and I have to laugh at their expressions while they wait for me some nights.  :)

Coonies love water.  Especially the younger ones!  I still have the "pools" out in the yard and there are 2 kits that won't eat the kibble off the ground.  They have to have it in the water or else they'll pick up pieces and put it in the water, then eat it.  I've found rocks in the water that they've obviously put in there to play with...along with snail/slug remains and once, a decapitated bird.  (ewww)  They won't be very happy when we start getting the freezing temperatures and I pack up their "pools" until Spring!  If I knew the pools wouldn't crack from the water freezing, I'd leave the pools out there so they could play with the ice... but, until the coonies start bringing in some cash to replace the pools, that's just the way it is.

Yep.... there's nothing more satisfying than knowing a wild critter trusts you!  Even if they just come out of the trees to greet me for the sole purpose of kibble, I still feel somewhat honored by their trust and company!

It's not everyone that can step outside and say "Where's my babies?" and have little fuzzy faces come bounding out of their hiding spots as if to answer "Here we are!!"   :)

No wonder we spoil them!

~Kell

I was late home one night last week when it was pouring rain and I didn't expect to see them until later because of the rain. Imagine my surprise when I got home and three soaking wet raccoons came down from the tree to greet me.

I'm surprised they don't mind the rain that much - I guess their coats just keep them pretty dry, although when they get really wet, I've discovered that half a raccoon is just hair anyway. My yard is at the bottom of a slope, which means that when it rains and you dig a hole in my yard, water will bubble out of the hole and across the ground. I was so careful when it started raining the first time to avoid the water when I threw the food out, and then the first thing the little furbutts did was wade into the water that was already there and then dig to create more of it. *rolls eyes*

I was going to say, I don't feed mine all they can eat either. Number one, I'm on unemployment and really can't afford to do that and two, I'm only renting and I may have to move some day. I'd like mine to be as self sufficient as possible too because of this. Still, I know mine are getting spoiled. After eating, if it isn't raining, they crawl up in the tree and sleep for a while. Shy likes to get herself on the roof of my trailer - the other night, Sissy and Mama were out in the yard and I threw them each a peanut and then looked up to see Shy's little face peering at me from the roof of the trailer. I was on my porch, so the top wasn't very too high up and I couldn't resist. I held her peanut up to her and she reached her little paw down and took it from me. Now that's spoiled!

Right now, I'm going through a bag a week and at one point last night there were 15 fuzz butts in the yard at once. Sooooo.... I guess I'm spending about $50 per month on their food.

One face will be near crawling up the door/window so I'll go out and suddenly there's little bandits coming out from under the steps, under the decks, behind trees and out from under bushes!! Before I know it I've got 6 to 15 raccoons gathering around!! It's quite the effective Sneak Attack they've got going!! :)

Does anyone want to admit how much they spend monthly? I think I'm probably not spending near as much as anyone else, since I try to limit feeding just the momma & 3 kits, but occasionally I will put something out for the occasional roving raccoon or two. Now that her kits are as big as her, they want a lot more food.
>
> I'm completely sure the 4 coming here are not Mamasita and her kits. I've named this momma, Growley. She always growls at me if I get to close to her. She doesn't care how close I get to her babies though. She and Mamasita have gone at it at least once and she's gone after another raccoon or two who was here when she and her crew showed up. Growley is a very aggressive momma and I think she's run Mamasita out of the neighborhood. The other night I knew for sure it wasn't Mama and her babies because after they would eat, they just about always all go to this one area of the yard and nape for a couple of hours. Two of them like to snuggle into a tree stump. Growley is also sneaky. For the longest time I couldn't figure out what was going on because I kept thinking it was Mamasita and two of her babies coming to the door, while a third one hid up in the landscaping. It was such odd behavior and it didn't make sense. I finally figured it out.
> Growley sends her kits to the door to scratch and cry (how sad is that listening to them cry?) and act all pathetic and hungry while she hides behind a tree or bush. As soon as I go outside to take food, she comes out of hiding and joins them. Has anyone ever seen anything like this before?

Tonight Dumbcat showed up the same time the rugrats did. Dumbcat stood right
at the edge of the porch, so when Sissy came up, she just reached out and
grabbed Dumbcat around a paw. Dumbcat hissed and batted with his other paw and I
got a good laugh for the night. Dumbcat's name is really Shadow but I'm thinking
I should change it - I mean, how many times do you have to step on a cat before
he finally gets out from under your feet? It wouldn't be that bad except he
screams like a girl and I always jump straight up and cling to the ceiling.
grumble, grumble

I do adore the little kids though. Tonight Mama was up in the tree and after
I'd given the kids a peanut, I walked over to the tree to offered one to Mama.
My little kids finished their peanut and walked over to meet me on my way back
to the porch - they've never done that before. I don't usually encourage them to
approach me when they're on the ground.

I suppose by next spring I could have 3 mama raccoons with their babies, so I
should be careful what I wish for.

This past Spring, the raccoon kits would play in the water, stand in the bucket
(how they got all 4 legs in there I'll never know!!), and soon decided it was
fun to tip it over, spilling the water, and batting the bucket around on the
deck. So... I found a big ol' rock to put in the bottom of the bucket to weigh
it down a bit. That seemed to work for a while....until one of the bigger
coonies decided he didn't like the rock in the bucket and would try to pull the
rock out of the bucket! We'd be watching TV or a movie (over the internet) and
we'd hear * thud * ** Thud ** *** THUD *** coming from the deck as
"Mr. Anti-Rock" would lift the rock a bit and drop it back in the bucket. Over

coonie world and you'll end up with more and more visitors! Especially in the
fall/early winter when they're trying to bulk up. I'm running "Backyard Traffic
Control" most nights now... trying to shuffle one coonie family to one spot of
the yard, another family to another spot, the males off to the sides.... all in
my little attempt to get everyone out there to get along and not fuss TOO much
amongst themselves. One family (Little Momma & kits) now know the drill and
they'll stay in "their spot" and wait while I make the rounds and get everyone
situated and fed. Then I can go to their spot and feed them. It's pretty
comical and I have to laugh at their expressions while they wait for me some
nights. :)

They have to have it in the water or else they'll pick up pieces and put it in
the water, then eat it. I've found rocks in the water that they've obviously
put in there to play with...along with snail/slug remains and once, a
decapitated bird. (ewww) They won't be very happy when we start getting the
freezing temperatures and I pack up their "pools" until Spring! If I knew the
pools wouldn't crack from the water freezing, I'd leave the pools out there so
they could play with the ice... but, until the coonies start bringing in some
cash to replace the pools, that's just the way it is.

I think this was started before, but I couldn't find the original thread.

Anyway, mine like peanuts and cat food, raw eggs, French toast sticks (don't
ask!), pumpkin pie crusts with whipped cream, canned cat food and sometimes
bread, dog food and apples. They don't like canned tuna, sourdough bread,
strawberries, watermelon or French fries.

   I haven't tried grapes yet.

#1 Don't stand within 10 ft of a raccoon that is shaking themselves dry,
especially if said raccoon has been out in the pouring rain for hours and hours.

water in them before they shake!

I can tell you what Ohio raccoons WON'T eat: rye bread, in any of it's various
forms, dark, soft, etc. I could never figure this out, but it seems universal.
They do love grapes. When I toss them, they bounce and roll and it's fun to
watch the fuzzies chase after them and pounce on them.

The raccoons here in Western Washington (or at least in my vacinity) won't eat a lot of the "typical" things either.  They'll eat bread...but not happily.   They won't touch any kind of veggie - guess they get enough of that from the woods.

What they love here includes grapes, animal cookies (low-fat organic if you please), peanut butter puppy treats (homemade), fruit loops, frosted mini wheats, and the dog and/or cat kibble.

We have a rather large grape vine that holds up the back of our house.
We check our 'coon's feet regularly for purple stains that would suggest
they are making wine.

No, Andrew, no deli fare. However, like Kelly, I have made them small peanut
butter sandwiches on occasion. It's a love/hate affair. They love the PB but
hate that it sticks to the roof of their mouths and gets on their hands. Much
licking and cleaning takes place.

By the way, I hate it when the phone rings while I am making their sandwiches
and a friend asks, "So, what are you doing?"

No, he was my landlady's grandson, for whom I sat on a regular basis.

She let him watch Backdraft when he was four; he turned into the world's youngest, most enthusiastic firefighter (which is a damn sight better than becoming an arsonist...).  Wouldn't go anywhere without his gear (a set of turnouts I got him for Halloween).  We were in Wally World one day -- with him in full bunker gear -- when some nice old lady (60's or 70's) said "Look at the cute fireman."  Cameron pointed at me and replied, "Look at dat, dat's my brudder, goddammit."  I tried to explain that Kurt Russell REALLY said "goshdarnit" and it was just the Chicago accent.  Now that Cameron is back with his father, he's been driving Dad nuts with fire drills, escape plans, testing smoke detectors and all that good firefighting stuff.

still no sign of totally blind Mama raccoon, and not sure if her twins are visiting either.  I did think they might have been here a couple times with a younger female (possibly blind mama's baby from the previous year), - but haven't seen those lately either. whether it's those twins of blind mama's or not I am not sure.

the weather has been so bad (raining) most of this month, and it's dark so early now, that we aren't going out front as often on these horrible wet nights, so might be missing them if they do come here.  But blind mama had a habit of bringing her twins here earlier in the daytime, to make sure they were seen and fed.

the skinny young mama is still bringing her one baby here each day, in the daylight.  Missed them yesterday, but they were here around noon today, starving hungry.

Little boys have been fascinated by firefighting since the profession began,
including me. (The closest I got was producing a seminar on arson investigation
last summer. We had 60 investigators from all over Northern Ohio.) You and his
dad are doing well to support his passion. In time, he will make his own career
choice.

I think we are getting off topic--sorry folks.

my pleasure, Dave.  glad you liked it.  Jacquie Lawson's a clever artist, right.   Actually the art work on that one isn't quite as good as some of her other cards.

We here in Canada celebrate our Thanksgiving in October, so am afraid we won't be having a TG dinner tomorrow, unless we go across the border near here, to enjoy one.  Am seriously thinking of doing just that :)
chat later, Alandra
