Hey, Trese--

How about, "I donate cat and dog food to an animal shelter from time to time."
Well, it's kinda true, right?

Hi Dave.

I just laugh every time I read about your "infrared raccoon alarm." I've not
had shaking of the door, but they do scratch and on occasion I've heard a thump
like they're throwing themselves at the door.

Hi Alandra.

It's usually only one kit who does all the crying. I've heard whimpering when
Growley Mama has gone after another raccoon who has invaded "her" territory. I
think it's the other raccoon, but it could be one of her kits, I'm not sure.
It's completely different from the crying they do at the door. This sounds like
a very loud cooing type sound? I can't even describe it, but it's very loud.
It actually sounds louder from upstairs then it does when I'm 25 feet from the
back door. They carry on until I go to the door, and then one or two of the
kits stand up with their arms outstretched, like they're saying, "Romeo, oh
Romeo why hast thee foresaken me?" Okay, so I'm not up on my Shakespeare, but
you get the message. LOL. I really want to wean this group off from coming
here. Growley Mama is so aggressive towards all the other raccoons who come
around and every time there is a fight in the yard it's her. I know she's doing
this because she wants to ensure her babies get all the food available, survival
of the fittest and everything, but the fighting and crying at the door draws
attention to our yard. If we weren't living so close to other people I wouldn't
care at all. I am feeding them in another area of the yard which is a little
more secluded from being seen, so I'm trying to keep them from coming to the
back door. But, I think they have become dependent on getting food here and
when they don't get fed they just hang around for hours. I miss Mamasita!

Hi Kell, no Mejers here, or Krogers, or Albertsons, but have visited Albertsons and Fred Meyers at Bellingham, WA over the years, but not for ages, as we haven't crossed the main border for years.   Just go across the border at Point Roberts, WA sometimes, which is about 5 mins drive from our place  :)

Alandra, do you have a Mejer's, or a Safeway?  I think I've seen AttaBoy dog food there...or maybe it was Albertson's...??   Not sure.

I think Mejers (or however it's spelled) is another version of the Fred Meyers stores.  They also sell Kroger brand items - maybe you have a Krogers?  A Safeway equivalent is Vons and Albertson's was bought out by the people at..... darn, forgot who it was.

Hi Ed, we went to Costco this afternoon, and they didn't have AttaBoy dog kibble there.  Am sure I've seen it there in the past.

All the higher priced kibble dog foods of Costco's were $27.98 and 28.99 a medium sized sack.  One was their Kirkland brand, which we used to buy for our dogs at one time, - it's the cheaper of the two.

I forget what the other name was, but it didn't agree with our Labs, but they were fine on the Kirkland lamb and rice one.  Was thinking today that I might put Lucy back on it when she's finished what we recently bought for her.

For ages we were buying special food from the vets --  "Mobility Support"  for Maggie and Lucy (yellow labs)  but that was over $100 for a large sack, so now that Maggie's gone, decided to switch Lucy to something less costly, altho there's a bit of Mobility Support left, which is being mixed with the new food til its finished.

Costco had large sacks of Pedigree dog kibble there too, I didn't make note of the price, but expensive.  I've never used Pedigree for our dogs.

Next time we visit a petfood store, will see if they have Attaboy kibble, have seen it someplace am sure, so will get back to you on it, and I'll make note of the weight of the sack and price if we do find it.

I'll be curious to see what your Costco charges. In a purely US
comparison, the Costco stores (there are two) in Anchorage charge exactly
the same as here in the lower forty-eight states for everything except
for produce & dairy products. That was a huge relief when we were
moving to AK where cost of living is still substantially more everywhere
outside the chain big-box stores.

Superstore's no name brand is about $18 someodd for the same size sack.

Nah...they were born the same time as the other 2 litters here.  Since there are so many in that one litter, it makes sense (to me anyway) that they are smaller than the other kits.  I'm sure they'll catch up over winter and I won't know who anyone is anymore!  LOL!!

wow, that's a great price at Fred Meyer's, Kell.  Too bad we don't have them here!
Am surprised that you say those 6 kits are still so small.  Were they born later?

All of ours that were born at the usual time, are almost full grown now.
Just the twins of blind mama are small, and the one baby of the young skinny mama is small, as they were born so much later.  But they are growing slowly but surely.

you are wise to not feed them too much.  I am going to cut down on the food I'm leaving for the coonies here.
(except for the ones who can't forage properly themselves, like blind mama and the crippled old mama who had her triplets by our back door.
we haven't seen blind mama for several days now, but I think her twins have been here.  Infact, they appeared yesterday with a younger female, - at least, it looked like blind mama's twins.

Hi Trese!

If you have a Fred Meyer...check them out!  I get a 50 lb. bag of the Fred Meyer brand dog kibble (MVP brand...it's a red and yellow bag) for $12.... well, I think it's $11.99.  Right now, I'm going through a bag a week and at one point last night there were 15 fuzz butts in the yard at once.  Sooooo.... I guess I'm spending about $50 per month on their food.

It's getting harder to stretch the food out right now tho.... especially with the Mom +6 Kits that are now showing up twice a day.  The kits are so small (as they should be) I feel like I can't say no to them!  LOL!  (yep... I'm a sucker for a cute little fuzzy face!)

The coonies here DO try to entice me into giving them all the food they want.  But I don't want to be their only food source...so I work hard at limiting my buffet offerin gs as much as I can and try to give each family no more than 2 helpings as I do still want them to be as self-sufficient as possible.

I know exactly what you mean by the "send someone to the door" manuver!!  I get that just about nightly...but no crying.  One face will be near crawling up the door/window so I'll go out and suddenly there's little bandits coming out from under the steps, under the decks, behind trees and out from under bushes!!  Before I know it I've got 6 to 15 raccoons gathering around!!  It's quite the effective Sneak Attack they've got going!!  :)

Costco's "Kirkland Signature" house branded products are always a good
buy, and I trust Costco to uphold high standards. My raccoons however
seem totally satisfied on the Atta Boy, perhaps only as a force of habit.
I used to try to add what I hoped would be a treat, like a few left over
meat balls from our dinner. The raccoons shoved them out of the way to
get to the kibble. Or more recently I scrambled some eggs for them. The
last raccoons to show up were stuck eating those eggs. Don't ask me why,
but they treat dry kibble as if it were ambrosia. The only other things
they seem to like are unsalted peanuts and grapes.

for Maggie and Lucy (yellow labs) but that was over $100 for a large
sack, so now that Maggie's gone, decided to switch Lucy to something less
costly, altho there's a bit of Mobility Support left, which is being
mixed with the new food til its finished.

Costco had large sacks of Pedigree dog kibble there too, I didn't make
note of the price, but expensive. I've never used Pedigree for our dogs.

Next time we visit a petfood store, will see if they have Attaboy kibble,
have seen it someplace am sure, so will get back to you on it, and I'll
make note of the weight of the sack and price if we do find it.

Zowie! That's quite a following.

I've always said that anything worth doing...is worth doing to excess.
19 years ago it all started for us with ducks. A pair would tap on our
glass looking for food. Within about two years I was putting out 160
pounds of cracked corn in a week. e live between two large lakes. Twice
a day the sky darkened as they flew around in a giant oval pattern
gathering their buddies. That got old and we gradually weened them off
of handouts.

But we've been feeding raccoons for about a dozen years now and still
find them a pleasure.

wow, that's a great price at Fred Meyer's, Kell.

So, I've been wondering, what does everyone else feed their raccoons? My husband has commented about how much money we're spending on food for just the few we get. Does anyone want to admit how much they spend monthly? I think I'm probably not spending near as much as anyone else, since I try to limit feeding just the momma & 3 kits, but occasionally I will put something out for the occasional roving raccoon or two. Now that her kits are as big as her, they want a lot more food.

I'm completely sure the 4 coming here are not Mamasita and her kits. I've named this momma, Growley. She always growls at me if I get to close to her. She doesn't care how close I get to her babies though. She and Mamasita have gone at it at least once and she's gone after another raccoon or two who was here when she and her crew showed up. Growley is a very aggressive momma and I think she's run Mamasita out of the neighborhood. The other night I knew for sure it wasn't Mama and her babies because after they would eat, they just about always all go to this one area of the yard and nape for a couple of hours. Two of them like to snuggle into a tree stump. Growley is also sneaky. For the longest time I couldn't figure out what was going on because I kept thinking it was Mamasita and two of her babies coming to the door, while a third one hid up in the landscaping. It was such odd behavior and it didn't make sense. I finally figured it out. Growley sends her kits to the door to scratch and cry (how sad is that listening to them cry?) and act all pathetic and hungry while she hides behind a tree or bush. As soon as I go outside to take food, she comes out of hiding and joins them. Has anyone ever seen anything like this before?

Nope. Not ours. More often the kits are either playing in the
coon-lagoon or playing up on the second floor landing that runs across
the back of the main part of the house. The adults line up and peer
through the glass door onto the patio.

It drives our dog crazy.

Hi Trese,

Are you a Costco member? The reason I ask is that I have been buying 50
pound bags of "Atta-Boy" kibble. That brand is Costco's least expensive
dog food. Our Sheltie eats mostly people food plus a little Beneful
brand overweight-dog version kibble, so the Atta-Boy is strictly for the
yard critters. Costco has a long & well deserved reputation of not
buying junk so while Atta Boy will not rival Purina and similar "gold
standard" dog foods, it won't be substandard. Costco researches their
product line with a great deal of diligence.

Around June/July we introduce puppy chow for the nursing mothers who need
more calories, and of course for the new kits when they show up. I
think that comes in around 30 pound bags. We went through three bags
this summer if I recall. But aside from that we feed the Atta Boy year
round.

Roughly half of the Atta Boy goes to our crow flock and the other half to
the 'coons. I had roughly 12 crows festooning a leafless tree when I
got up this AM. As soon as the food went out that number jumped to about
30. They were especially needy today because we had temperatures around
26° F overnight.

I really don't keep track, but I'd say a bag lasts three weeks on
average. I just checked the last store receipt and 50# of Atta Boy was
$16.79 (plus of course the 9.3% sales tax our state imposes as part of
their war on prosperity.)

hi Ed, thanks for that info re the AttaBoy kibble at Costco.  We are going there soon, so will check to see what our Cdn prices are, if they carry Attaboy here.  But I know it will cost more here, as have checked before at Costco when we discussed their prices here before.

We're currently buying a no name brand from Save On foods here, as that seems to be the best price we can get for the coonies.  It's a 16 kg sack which is about 35 pounds.  Forget the exact price as it's gone up a lot lately, but believe we're paying about the same price as you're paying for the 50 lb sack.

we also give them a bit of cat kibble and puppy chow year round.

Yes, feeding is expensive, but I figure that I'm keeping the cost down by not
putting out food for everyone in the woods to gobble, but rather coming to the
door when alerted by my infrared raccoon alarm. That way I get to see them and
make sure they all get some grub.

I know the coonies have a large vocal range, but I've not seen any crying to be
fed here. They do shake the door, though, if I'm not responding fast enough for
them.

probably not spending near as much as anyone else, since I try to limit feeding
just the momma & 3 kits, but occasionally I will put something out for the
occasional roving raccoon or two. Now that her kits are as big as her, they
want a lot more food.

She doesn't care how close I get to her babies though. She and Mamasita have
gone at it at least once and she's gone after another raccoon or two who was
here when she and her crew showed up. Growley is a very aggressive momma and I
think she's run Mamasita out of the neighborhood. The other night I knew for
sure it wasn't Mama and her babies because after they would eat, they just about
always all go to this one area of the yard and nape for a couple of hours. Two
of them like to snuggle into a tree stump. Growley is also sneaky. For the
longest time I couldn't figure out what was going on because I kept thinking it
was Mamasita and two of her babies coming to the door, while a third one hid up
in the landscaping. It was such odd behavior and it didn't make sense. I
finally figured it out. Growley sends her kits to the door to scratch and cry
(how sad is that listening to them cry?) and act all pathetic and hungry while
she hides behind a tree or bush. As soon as I go outside to take food, she
comes out of hiding and joins them. Has anyone ever seen anything like this
before?

Hi, no, haven't figured it out, the cost to feed them, but it's quite expensive, especially lately now that the price of all the kibble has gone up considerably, to say nothing of the extra treats ours get, plus the eggs, altho they seem to have gone off those somewhat.

Think I prefer to be like an ostrich and not know the exact price.  DH hasn't mentioned anything about it, - he likes them, so that's good.

Your Growley mama has some good tricks up her sleeve,  sending the babies to the door first, LOL.  I've never heard them cry for food like you describe.  But I have heard the babies cry or whimper in fear if the adults fight.   Is that the same sound you describe when the babies come to the door??
chat later, Alandra

I have to agree with you there, Alandra.  All of my furry friends have made my life so much more rewarding.

oh, I know you didn't mean that, Jeannie.  It just sweeps over me at times.  Losing 2 furry friends so close like that was very tough.  Every so often it just hits me.   But the way I think of it, is that they deserve to be thought about and grieved over.  They gave us so much and asked for so little, right.

that is beautiful Jeanne, thanks so much for sharing.  It brought tears to my eyes, thinking about our lovely Maggie and little old Ruggles who we parted with this past summer.
