Kate, we came to a similar conclusion. We are switching the static server --
to Windows NT 4.
Here's why. We have a system that was doing nothing called Nirvana2. We had
removed it from Exodus a few months ago to make room for another box. It was
the server that ran My.UserLand.Com. It's already seasoned, taken a lot of
hits, and we know how to admin it. It also can be seen by all the other
servers we have, which is where we got caught on Linux, we have two subnets
at Exodus, and the Linux server is only visible on one of the subnets. We
spent two full days trying to get it visible on the other subnet. There
surely is a way to do it, because Bierman was able to do it, but Jake,
Lawrence and myself and a half-dozen volunteers couldn't figure out how. We
gave up on that last night. (And then as a detour thought that the static
server we were using had been hacked, it's pretty clear it hasn't.)
But we don't want to run IIS. No one here knows how to admin that, and
further all our config files and processes are built around Apache. So we're
going to run Apache 2.0 on Windows.
We thought about FreeBSD (no experience) and Mac OS X (we have a spare cube)
but opted for tried-and-true. This is a very unglamorous but important
machine, it's like our community's printer. We're also upgrading the drive
to 100GB so we can grow the base of content.
Dave
