Apologies for this probably very basic question, which is almost certainly
addressed somewhere in the documentation. Being a crass novice, I have not been
able to find the answer quickly, so ask the "friendly, experienced users" to
give me a hand.

I have my posts allocated to categories. Opening a category in WEB-view then
displays the whole text of each of my posts in inverse chronological order, with
only the timeline as a separator and no way to skim an entry and jump to the
next item.

What I would like, is:
* a rendering of one post at a time
* a display of the title
* the body being limited to the first x words of the entry, or alternatively to
a summary (which one would have to supply separately)
* the possibility of then "opening up" to the complete post, if the reader is
interested to peruse in detail
* the possibility to skip to the next entry

Most BLOGS I have seen (and all others I have tested) have these features, so I
have little doubt the nestor of BLOGGING must be able to oblige as well.

Can somebody enlighten me?

Say, what's happening over there?
Today upstreaming is again down. This time no mention at all of an upstream or
error in the events log.
Is someone messing with the servers?

I can understand your side. Still, it's hard to justify that cost when you can
easily install one of the many free systems out there straight onto whatever web
server you're using with PHP and MySQL support. It will be more feature rich
(considering the amount of 3rd party modules for all of the main systems out
there), just as customizable, and (since they're your databases) have complete
control over content. The only advantage I see Radio having at this point is the
fact that all content is local before rendered to a server. That's great, but if
your web server is fast and accessible, I don't see the point.

Below is the message on my Events page. Upstreaming is blocked by the server.
Can someone do something to remedy this? It is clearly a server problem.

10 files: , , , , , , , , , . The server reported an error: Couldn't create the
folder "L:\static\", because "Can't complete the operation because Windows
reported an error: "The network path was not found"."

It's for the forum. I have already changed the one in my copy of radio but I am

I think I was wrong about the connection between the number of posts on the
homepage and the maximum number of posts in the RSS feed.

It appears that I can set the RSS configuration maximum to the number of POSTS
that I want to include without having to be able to set the number of days on
the homepage to cover the period of those same posts.

Then any aggregator will list all of posts in the feed and I can do what I want
with them.

Also, you should pay money for weblog software and hosting. Paying for something
implies value and expectation for services and therefore you've got some
leverage. If you're using Radio for a weblog system you should:

1. Get HaloScan for comments and trackbacks.
2. Get your own domain name. Places like GoDaddy make it easy.
3. Get your own webhost. UserLand provides the current space as a way to get
blogging fast, but if you value your writing, you to need to invest in it. Try
TextDrive [1] for shared hosting.

So let's add this up:
(all costs per year)

Radio UserLand: $40
Comments and Trackbacks: $12
Web-hosting: $144

$196 per year

So, is what you write worth $196 or $16.33 a month? But what about the
competition? Well, SixApart's TypePad provides a great package for $89.50 a
year. You get plenty of features but half the storage of TextDrive.

There's plenty of reasons why each is better. For your $196 investment each
year, you get complete control over your content, it's presentation, it's format
and it's delivery method with no lock in.

(Heckler from the crowd says "But what about you Steve? You don't use Radio!")

No, I don't any more. It's mainly due to my mental health and the software's
creator rather than the feature set. Still, I pay for the software I use now by
sending the developer money and I pay for the comments and the web-hosting.

Performance is good and the $12 is good. You get email notifications, true
moderation and your comments aren't specific company or weblog platform. They
have an "export" function on the members page. You also have HTML-level control
over the appearance of the window, so you could put in links to your own ads or
such.

/"Use Haloscan for comments instead of UserLand's server. They have some great

Ok. Maybe, but how is the performance? To get the more features through them,
it's a $12 "donation" a year. That's $40 for Radio and $12 for comments. $52 a
year just to run a blog?! This made sense to me 5 years ago when I started it.
It doesn't makes sense to me now.
