This might be due to the fact that many of the filepaths are hardcoded into
Radio. You
might try 2 things. Simplest is running <a
href="http://thefragens.com/blog/publicTools/scripts/">myFixFilePathsAndAddresse\
s</
a> script. Otherwise you might have to reinstall Radio and copy over your Data
Files
folder.

It's been a long time since I've used Radio, but Google should have something
regarding
moving installations, etc.

Hi All.

Not sure if anyone else is out there, but just in case...

I am trying to install Radio UserLand on a new computer, and while the
install appears to have run fine, when I start Radio UserLand, the
icon for it appears in the notification area/system tray (Windows
Vista), but the program won't start, and I can't get to the webpage to
edit my posts and such.

My registration expires in a few weeks, but I really need to get it
working on my new machine before I renew, just in case it won't work
with Vista or my configuration.

I tried the serial number entry page in both Firefox and Internet
Explorer to no avail.

The page will just not load, at all

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

John Giacobbe

Hi All:

Total newbie here. I have a blog (at
http://radio.weblogs.com/0122067/) that I have been putting together
for a few years, but I have only used it as a vehicle for my students
to visit and work from (I'm a high school science teacher). Now I'd
like to increase its traffic, and hopefully get some comments from
other folks, who are not forced at gunpoint to visit and send me a
comment.

Any kind person who can help me do this will certainly earn some good
karma. Off list help is cool, too. You can reply to this email, or
send me some wisdom at jgiacobbe_skyline@....

Thanks!

I've been setting up stories on my new blog and when I've set the story text up in Verdana font, it renders the apostrophy character as a question mark when you view the story out on the web.   I changed the stories to use Arial and now they are fine.   Just wondering if anyone knows about this problem.

Marc,

I tried this procedure with the OPML file produced by Google Reader
and I get an error message saying "Can't get the "xmlURL" attribute
because the table doesn't an attribute with that name". Is it due to
the nature of the OPML file generated by Google Reader or was Radio
designed to import only the OPML files it generates?
Thanks!

You have to maintain the chronological order of the posts if you do this, but if
you open the Radio application window and choose Tools->Developers->Jump. Enter
weblogData.posts for each post you can modify the "when" value under the Value
column.

You should just post all the posts in the order they will appear on the weblog
from oldest to newest. Then find the first of those "backdated" posts and change
the date, the continue until you get to the last one you want to backdate.

You can't just backdate to any arbitrary date. So if the last post was on March
3, 2006, you don't want date the next post January 2, 2006.

Does anyone have an idea as to how you can post stuff on prior days (FEATURE
SUPPORTED BY OTHER PRODUCTS LIKE FEED FOR ALL, USERLAND....)? We tested a copy
of Radio shifting the dates on the host computer's calendar clock. It worked,
but then the whole thing went blooey when we reopened the program under today's
date, and nothing further would load in.

Suggestions? We have weeks of old stuff that we need to put on line and we're
stumped.

Publish your "timeless" stuff in html in a separate folder. Hot link back to
what is relevant in your radio system. The stories system is a bit unreliable.
There is no reason to have static stuff trapped in here when it is very easy to
upload and maintain in a simple form like HTML.

Andy - Yes. I was shorthanding, but you get the idea. Everything else in the
desktop website loaded up. Something was corrupted, as there were numerous blank
posts, poorly re-written older posts, etc. The backup system is useless.

I scrapped and started over again. I left the html for the past pages out there
so they would be found by the web engines in the digital ether. One day maybe I
can hook them back up again.

The clean install seems to be working fine.

But where do I find that archive folder (with, I suppose, the folder for that
particular day)? There is no such folder with that name in my Radio or www

backups/weblogArchive/posts folder with the xx.xml files?

Hi Hetty,

Currently, you will need to manually remove any stories/images since they aren't
deleted when a post is deleted.

You would also need to delete the xx.html file in the archive folder if you
don't want a "blank" HTML page to appear on your site.

Yes, you have accurately described the conceptual difference between posts and
stories. You can, however, give a post a quasi-timeless character by including a
link to that post's permalink in your navigator links, i.e. in the
#navigatorLinks.xml file, so there will always be a link to that post on your
home page or category home pages even after 7 days elapse.

How do you delete posts with images and stories properly? Are all relating
images and stories also automatically deleted when the post is deleted? Or do
you have to remove the images and everything else manually?

And when there are no posts left for a particular day, is the folder for that
day also automatically removed? Or do we also have to do that manually?

Thanks.

Not sure what happened with the end of that last post. The other option is the
Workbench tool [1] which you can install in Radio, which gives a list of the
titles of your posts in reverse chronological order. Each title is linked to the
archival copy of the post. I didn't find this tool self-explanatory when I first
used it so if you try it feel free to post questions here. But I'm not sure it's
really quite what you wanted anyway.

Radio automatically creates an archive page for each day's worth of posts - this
is not quite the same as 'a rendering of one post of a time', if by that you
mean one post per web page, but it does subdivide past posts to some extent.

If I understand your question, you would like the home page for each category to
show the title and beginning of each post with a link to the full text on the
archive page. Radio does not offer this function automatically. You can write a
script to do it but that requires knowing and working with the proprietary
language Radio is written in, UserTalk.

There are a couple of ways to display a list of titles only. You can insert the
macro radio.macros.recentTitledBlogPosts into the #hometemplate.txt, say in the
sidebar. I have it in my blog [1] like this:
&lt;/%radio.macros.recentTitledBlogPosts (maxPosts:20, maxTitleLength:50,
flIncludeWhen:true, cellSpacing:4)/%. More on this macro
nch/code/workbenchRoot/Workbench tool by Rogers Cadenhead and use the script
Workbench.viewPostIndex() to display a list of the titles of your posts in
reverse chronological order. Each title is linked to the archival copy of the
post. I didn't find this tool self-explanatory when I first used it so if you
try it feel free to post questions here.

Hi Willem. You need to modify your category templates as well in order to see
the comments on your category pages. It's not enough to just change the template
from your Desktop home page preferences for that only handles your home category
pages as you've discovered.

Look in Radio UserLand:www:categories:nameOfYourCategory for the templates. I
believe you want the #itemTemplate.txt file.

I want to enable my readers to comment on my posts. For that purpose I have
followed the instructions in the reference section of the user guide (Comments
Feature) to the letter (enabled comments, added the comments link to the item
template, republished the home page).

As a result, the possibility to send comments is now open for posts linked to
the "home" category, but NOT to posts in any other category.

Any ideas?

Radio maintains it's own database of post locally on your machine along with the
Radio Web server that you use to create new posts. There is no server side
software required since Radio publishes static HTML pages.

Hi

To be honest: I dont understand this all here.
Is the software i downoaded a frontend for the radio userland db?

Cant I use the software with my own hoster and my SQL DB (hosted)
What if I once decide to use a different software / weblog system?
Will all posts and DB entries and configuration be lost then?

Sorry for the basic question, but where would I find this file?

Thanks.

Hello, all you old hands in Radio Land, here is the new kid on the block again.

This time my question regards "permanent information".

I want to use my WEBLOG as a vehicle to disseminate information about my
professional practice. That means the relevance of some posts is quasi
"timeless" as opposed to calendar dependent. And I would like such articles (by
category) to be easily accessible all of the time, not kicked out or archived
after 7 days

Is this, perhaps, the distinction between "posts" and "stories"?

Or is there another way to attain the same result?

Be assured of my deepest gratitude for any pointers....

Apologies for this probably very basic question, which is almost certainly
addressed somewhere in the documentation. Being a crass novice, I have not been
able to find the answer quickly, so ask the "friendly, experienced users" to
give me a hand.

I have my posts allocated to categories. Opening a category in WEB-view then
displays the whole text of each of my posts in inverse chronological order, with
only the timeline as a separator and no way to skim an entry and jump to the
next item.

What I would like, is:
* a rendering of one post at a time
* a display of the title
* the body being limited to the first x words of the entry, or alternatively to
a summary (which one would have to supply separately)
* the possibility of then "opening up" to the complete post, if the reader is
interested to peruse in detail
* the possibility to skip to the next entry

Most BLOGS I have seen (and all others I have tested) have these features, so I
have little doubt the nestor of BLOGGING must be able to oblige as well.

Can somebody enlighten me?
