They don't use adhesive to attach capacitors (they just solder them in
place) so that gunk in the pics is definitely leakage.

Time to replace them! In fact, I would recommend that you replace all of
the caps that are on the list. The parts are just pennies each, most of
your cost is going to be the shipping.

Thanks so much for the suggestion. I finally pulled out the power supply
board and had a look. There are two caps that look suspicious, but Iım not
so sure if what Iım seeing are leaks or rather adhesive. Perhaps you could
have a look at the attached* pics and lend me your opinion...?

In addition to and not unlike the audible symptoms, there are resident
horizontal ghosts of alternating lighter and darker bands that migrate
slowly up the screen, accompanied by a slight pulsation over the entire
screen. Both the audible and visible interferences seem totally unaffected
by external factors (eg., regardless of whether the disc is playing or
paused) - though the darker the image, the more visible the ghosts, and
likewise the quieter the soundtrack, the the more audible the humm.

It's somehow comforting to imagine they are related.

Although not debilitating it does detract from the overall viewing enjoyment
of a DVD. I'd be very grateful for any opinions.

Does closed captioning work at all?
I have Yamakawa 715 with latest A2 update and it doesn't work for me.
(TV supports them and they work on my laptop, so the problem has to
be on Yamakawa DVD drive).
Any idea?

Hello all,

Just my two-cents' worth: I'm no "brand-wh*re," but I've had very good luck
with tray-load Pioneer drives (even the infamous DVD-120). They fit the
715, they're very responsive and reliable and the RPC-1 firmware and
utilities are readily-available.

http://pioneerdvd.rpc1.org/

Cons: the RPC-1 120 firmware seems not to address the issue of excessive
spin, so you can hear the drive spinning for at least the first several
minutes into the flick (though still a hands-down improvement over the
factory Raite drive). I've noticed some other re-engineered firmwares claim
to take the opportunity to slow the drive down "while they're at it," as it
does not need to run at full-gallop just to play movies as it might to copy
data in a PC.

As for physical concerns, I used an Exacto knife, a metal file and some fine
sandpaper to make the smiley-face bezel fit, and it does. I do not touch
the 715's bezel or use any glue. You have to plan it out well, so that you
don't end up leaving gaps or unnaturally sharp corners/edges - or worse -
going all the way through the plastic! Depth is perfect as it is, but I had
to bore out the 715's holes top-to-bottom for a factory fit. :)

Now, when you do RPC-1 firmware updates, I cannot stress enough the
necessity to match the firmware TO THE LETTER with the drive. Otherwise,
you might find that the firmware you secured beforehand won't work, and may
kill the drive. Save yourself the nerves: when purchasing used drives (esp.
sight-unseen) with such a project in mind, WATCH OUT for OEM drives (i.e.,
pulled out of an HP/Compaq etc.) with seemingly extraneous letters following
the model number - they CAN make a difference! Consider a missing or even
gray (!) front bezel as a red flag. Even if the drive is advertised as,
say, DVD-115, ask the seller to quote the ENTIRE model number for you
(following the prominent word "CODE: " on Pioneer drives), including any
extra letters without paraphrasing. From experience, the 115 model, for
example, was bundled with many machines with respective variations. Better
yet, have them take a photo of the label, and inquire about any firmware
flashes attempted.

As with any long-distance sale, ask even dumb questions just to feel out the
seller himself. If he's evasive or otherwise rubs you the wrong way after,
say, the second response - you may want move on to another seller and save
yourself "unpleasantries." ;)

After updating the firmware, I put a small thermal label with the version on
both the top of the drive and back of the 715 for easy reference. Seditec
(Europe's authorized service center in Hamburg) had put a similar label on
the back of the 715 when they initially cracked the Raite drive. Yes, they
offered that as an under-warranty service for a whopping 80 DEM.

Whichever route you take, just don't count on warranty coverage after taking
it under the knife! :o

Good Luck! :)

Jed Dunlap
Lancaster, PA

PS.

>> after changing the drive i can play audio cd's and mp3s, but i cant
>> play any dvd movies

Are you sure it's a DVD drive? ;)

PS2. On a *similar* subject, if anybody is having issues with kernel panics
(hex dumps) after installing a Pioneer DVD burner in a Mac, the solution is
very simple: reinstall or update the OS. As it is an internal component,
apparently Mac OS does not thoroughly probe it (and thus does not update any
drivers) without necessity!! Just an FYI, if anyone's tearing their hair
out.

Despite what they would have you believe, you need NOT purchase Apple's
SuperDrive version of the same, to the tune of $600.

Just don't run Apple's firmware update (will show up under Software Update)
on it if you intend to keep it RPC-1. Software update will let you hide
(disable) any given given update. Do that. ;)

Hi

Check if the drive is set to the correct region and the latest player
firmware.

I replaced my drive (Raite RDR-201H) with a Samsung SD-612B yesterday
and upgraded the player firmware to A2 (715 BT RC free & MV off)
yesteday and it plays basically anything.

I do have one problem though - the CD-tray is wider (13cm) than the
old drive's tray (11.5cm) which means the tray cannot open through
the players faceplate!!! I'll have to "enlarge" the opening. Did the
616 fit perfectly? What is the width of the tray?

I have a Enzer 5015 DVD Player with a Raite RDR-201 DVD-ROM drive.
The firmware version for this drive is 4.71. Is there a newer

The player is having EXTREME difficulties reading mp3 and CDR discs.
The disc spins like mad with loud "clikking" noises inbetween.

Will upgrading the firmware help or will I have to replace the drive?

Season's greetings and happy new year to all.

Picked up an extra 715 for $ 10 recently and thought I might change
the DVD player for a hard drive, a spare 20 GB I have from an old PC,
formatting it FAT 32 and loading it with MP3's to create a MP3
jukebox. I thought I read in an old post that you could do this. Or am
I going bonkers?

I recall that one helpful fellow in our group said something about a
firmware patch to change the functions of the remote keys to switch
between the DVD drive and hard drive (I guess this would suggest that
you could have both DVD and hard drives installed?) but I can't find
any such patch in the files section. Has anybody done this?

But if you just wanted a hard drive only player then why would you
need to monkey with the remote?

Anyone like to share their experience or advice?

Thanx
Michael

Greets,

I couldn't find a classified section so I don't know if posting here
is acceptable use.

I came here awhile back looking for a solution to "the problem"
and was guided by some excellent folks here, thanks again. I
have successfully repaired my Raite AV715 and installed a
external power switch (it had already previously been fully
hacked and now thinks it's a Yamakawa)--problem is, when it
crapped out I buggered the drive tray getting a rental disc out (in
my haste), and although the PS now works, the tray does not
want to close all the way. If anyone is looking for a unit with a
fixed PS and has a working drive, it should be an easy swap.
The hard part is done, but since the drive is faulty I can't verify
that everything works as before, so "Caveat Emptor!"

BTW, I'm in San Diego, CA. Any ideas as to a reasonable asking
price, or where I should list it? It seems like too specialized an
item for general eBay listing. My wife got tired of waiting for me
to fix it and we've since bought another one. I don't use the
macrovision hack and I can play Region 2 DVD's on my iBook
and hook it up to the TV.

Thanks in advance,

Jamie

Actually, the power supply is the complete "yellow" PCB (printed circuit
board) on the left hand side of the machine. The "green" PCB on the
otherside is the motherboard.

While some people have indeed replaced the complete power supply, all of
us that have responded to you so far have actually repaired the existing
power supply. So all you need to do is order the parts from the list and
replace them on the PCB and you should be good to go. (There are 1 or 2
parts from the main motherboard PCB that will also likely need replacing).

Well, just FYI, before I started the JP1 group (for people hacking remote
controls) I'd never done any soldering either. I have next to no
electronics knowledge either, so when people start talking about
capcitors, resistors, diodes, etc all I know is that they exist and that I
can order them from Mouser or Digi-key, I don't really know what they all
do.

Think of it like this, you can plug a device into a wall outlet without
understanding how electricity works, well it's somewhat similar here. You
can remove a burned out capacitor and replace it with a new one without
knowing what a capacitor does nor what it's role in the overall circuit
is. All you need to know how to do is work a soldering iron.

Just like with the wall outlet, you do need to take care to put the new
parts in the right way around but unlike the wall outlet these parts
aren't designed so that they can't go in the wrong way around. The PCB
itself will usually have markings that should show you which side is
positive and which side is negative.

Here's another way of looking at it. Right now your Raite is worthless,
even for parts you won't get more than $5 or so for it, so what do you
have to lose? If you are not successful in trying to repair the player,
you'll still probably get $5 for it for parts, so you won't have lost
anything, but if you are successful, not only will you feel really proud
of yourself (trust me, I was *WAY* pleased with myself when I fixed mine,
as it was the first electronics device that I ever fixed) but you'll also
have a region-free MV-free DVD player again.

Even though there are tons of really cheap region-free DVD players on the
market now, very few of them are macrovision-free, so the Raite is still a
desirable player (for those that understand what it is).

Get the PCB marker numbers from the parts list, then look at the photos in
the Photo section. From memory, you should see three larger resistors in a
line where the middle one is burned out. I think you also have to replace a
couple of trasistors (ie, the little black components on three legs).

I didn't treat the motherboard any differently to the power supply board
when I replaced the parts, and my player came back to life.

How can one know if those 2 parts on the main motherboard need rplacing?

Hi.
Best place to find info is on www.negge.de all in German but use
babblefish and it is readable in some way anyhow.
For the powersuply
http://www.negge.de/Raite-RPD713-
based/Selbstgebautes/Netzteilprobleme/
Other problems like display
http://www.negge.de/Raite-RPD713-based/Selbstgebautes/Displayausfall/
Component list is in the file section on this group.
Hope it will help someone.

everyone for their input and info. I haven't had a problem
discovering the posts in the archives nor reading about the parts
list (already have both lists Mouser & Digi-Key as well as the
referenced pictures), it's just that I am as Walt put it,
electronically challenged. Not regarding firmware or anything
computer related, but actually going into the guts of the Raite and
attempting to fix it.

the electric power cord that plugs into the wall or is it the cord
that resembles the cord that plugs into a computer power supply that
goes into the circuit board of the Raite?? When I'm looking for
this replacement power supply should I be looking under computer
power supply? Dvd power supply? Another Raite power supply? What
terminology should I use and what types of power supply should I be
looking for exactly?

a newbie regarding fixing electronics. So, the very act of
soldering is a giant leap for me. If it gets to be too much to
handle, I'll sell the player for parts. I've been putting it off
though, because I used the player for so long (5yrs) and I really
don't want to get rid of it. Right now, I'm using a Malata with no
problems and it plays everything (even PAL discs).
