I've been using Rapid-q for over a year and I thing that
the problem is somewhere else. The library is not infected -
just the backdoor.a trojan horse has been done with rapid-q
and the anti-virus companies just think that every program
made with the standard library of rapid-q is a virus. If
rapid-q is infected - then why the small libraries are
infected?!!

Hi

Again for all Newbees: There is NO virus in the RapidQ Libs!
Your Virus Protection Software only displays a FALSE alarm!!!
Send the "infected" library file to the producer of your
anti virus software and ask him to correct the virus pattern
used by the virus scanner.

The alarm is only a bug in your anti virus software! Ask the
producer of your anti virus software if you don't believe me!

For details read Messages #19589 and #19655
( http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rapidq/messages/19589 or
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rapidq/messages/19655 ).

I have notified AVG of this problem. If you speak Czech, maybe you
can explain it to them better than I can. The trojan in question
was written with RapidQ, and AVG is being given a string from the
library as the "virus signature." Thus it will trigger on every
copy of the library, including all programs compiled with it.

This is the second time this has happened with AVG. They were sent
a copy of the compiler.

Wrong. AVG thinks it is detecting a trojan because the anti-virus
writers used a string from the RapidQ library that was included in
the trojan (the trojan was written using RapidQ). I've notified
AVG that they have made this error again.

(Apparently there is a new flavour of backdoor.raid.a out there
also written with RapidQ).

I maintain a double firewall here and nothing gets through it
unless I either bore a hole for it or take the firewalls down.
RapidQ's libraries have NEVER raised an alarm flag.

This is NOT a RapidQ problem. It's an AVG problem.

What virus checker are you using? I have notified Grisoft of their
error (this is the second time they've made the same error).

What is happening is that the backdoor.raid.a trojan was written
using RapidQ and thus contains the libraries. The virus companies
are being lazy and just picking some string at random in the trojan
to identify it rather than looking for really unique code. Perhaps
if there were more RapidQ programs out there, they would be forced
to do their homework better!

In any case, notify your virus software provider.

It works well. Gives VB examples, which you can port to RQ.
Also, do some searching on Google...

I agree! I had the old backdoor.raid.a virus before
but when I recompiled the same code with the same
rapidq setup and windows setup, the new (latest) AVG
Update ignored it completely (didn`t find it). I suppose
having AVG FREE edition, like me, has its down sides :(

Dear Jacques:

ALSHELL and BLOCKI were two projects of mine, the former being a try
at a shell replacement for windows, and the latter a game. I know
they weren't part of my Rapid-Q distro, but the worrying thing is
that both the libraries were.

Thank you,

Subject: RapidQ and relative Paths

I have been working on RBCoder.bas, which other people have been
working on earlier.

I am interested in different solutions, to put the inc and lib files
in System\Lib and System\Include folders, or to put them in the system
folder, or to put them in the example folder where the .bas file and
the resource files (.bmp, etc..) are.

I have 3 versions of the Compile command, which are shown below, I
have commented out two of the alternatives.

The version for local compiling works. For that I place all resource
files in the example program folder, including all needed inc and lib
files.
(I like this solution because it gives more control, and it is
possible to use special versions of inc and lib files, it takes more
place though)

The version for Include and Lib folders under the system folder also
works well. Special lib or inc files must be copied to these special
folders under the system folder. That is a problem.

But the version for having lib and inc files in the system folder does
not work. It produces paths to the system folder with a backslash at
the end, and the compiler refuses to use them. How can I get rid of
the backslashes? -I"D:\RapidQ\" instead of -I"D:\RapidQ"

SUB CompileClick
     DIM Path AS STRING
     DIM Compiler AS STRING
     DIM Icon AS STRING
     DIM PID AS long
     Saveclick
     Path = COMMAND$(0)-Application.ExeName
     IF FileName <> "" THEN
        Compiler = "\"" + Path + "RC.EXE\" -vON -r "
IF IconName <> "" THEN Compiler = Compiler + "-g\"" + IconName + "\" "

   'Compiler = Compiler + "\"" + FileName + "\""
'works for local folder compiling, resource files and lib and inc
files in example folder
   'Compiler = Compiler + "-I\"" + Path + "\" " + "-L\"" + Path + "\" "
+ FileName + "\""
'works for local compiling, but it shouldn't, tried to create lib+inc
paths pointing to system folder, how can I fix that line?
   Compiler = Compiler + "-I\"" + Path + "\Include\" -L\"" + Path +
"\Lib\" \"" + FileName + "\""
'works for inc and lib files in System\Lib and System\Include paths.
Resource files in example folder. This is the original line.

Showmessage (Compiler) 'for checking paths before compiling
         PID = SHELL(Compiler,0)
          WaitForSingleObject (PID, &HFFFF)
      Path = SplitPath(FileName)
      LogRichEdit.LoadFromFile Path + "DUMP.$$$"
      Kill Path + "DUMP.$$$"
     END IF
END SUB

I want all example programs in their own folders, with their resource
files, and no need for fixed paths. Bmp pictures have no path in the
program, or relative paths if placed in a special folder under the
example program folder.

The reason why I am trying 3 different alternatives for the
compileclick is that sometimes it is better to have all files in the
example folder, including lib and inc files.
Sometimes it is better to have the lib and inc files in the system
folder, or in special folders.

I haven't decided which system to use yet, and maybe I will use two
compile buttons, one for local compile in the example folder, and one
for using the standard inc and lib files, placed in special folders or
in the system folder.

I am also doing this to learn more.
One thing I learned yesterday:
' If $ESCAPECHARS is turned ON, you can use
'escape sequences in your strings.
' PRINT "\"" -- Output is "

This is used a lot in the line I am trying to rewrite.

Is there some general consensus on the issue of putting inc and lib
files in the system folder or in special folders?
To me it doesn't matter, I just want to use the most common
arrangement.

Hi Abssa,

Try looking at the DoEvents statement in the RQ docs. If you can call this
periodically, it will not look like it has crashed (not responding). This
will let the program process messages (paint, clicks, etc) while still
processing for a while.

Sincerely,
Brian C. Becker @ www.BrianCBecker.com

Regarding where you can get QBasic stuff...

I would definately make use of www.qbasic.com. It has tutorials and
loads of files. There are even four compilers there (though I regret
to say they are not quite as up to scratch as I would like).

QBasic 1.1 is completely free; however, it does not compile. There
has been a lot of trouble with the higher versions, though (such as
QBasic 4.5 and 7.1) because while they compile, they are commercial,
not free, software. Microsoft stopped producing the compiling
versions of QB several years ago.

However, my friend emailed Microsoft about possibly buying a few
licenses for some commercial versions of QBasic. The Microsoft
person he emailed didn't have a clue as to what my friend was talking
about and thought that QBasic didn't exist.

Perhaps Microsoft really IS denying that it knows what the higher QB
versions are, thus making them free. I, for one, find this rather
unlikely. Very few times do you see Mr. Gates passing up a lucrative
thing.

Long story short: if you obey copyright laws and don't want to cut
against the grain by getting QB 4.5 or 7.1, get QB 1.1. The only
issue, in this case, is compiling.

You can get QB 1.0 or 4.5 right here:
http://www.geocities.com/samccone/qbasic.html

I just found the site right now for you because the site I was hoping
for doesn't exist anymore, so I haven't had a chance to look through
it. It looks, however, like you could get a few tutorials and
examples out of the site.

Here's the Yahoo Directory for QBasic:
http://dir.yahoo.com/Computers_and_Internet/Programming_and_Developmen
t/Languages/BASIC/QBasic_QuickBasic/

I imagine you could find everything you need just with the Yahoo
directory. It has so many sites in it, it could make one cry.

I hope this has given you enough information!

What are you trying to accomplish? I use val to convert an edit box text represented by a number, Example

Create Edit As QEdit
    Text = "4"
End Create

a = Val(Edit.Text)
ShowMessage Str$(a) ' should display 4

Hi Danny

I use VAL() to convert an edit box text, too.
But I don't know what other users enter into the edit box.
If an user enters "->" instead of a valid number then the
RapidQ VAL function gets confused. In other BASIC dialects
VAL("->") is evaluated to the value 0 and the execution
of the program continues. Therefore in other BASIC
dialects there is no reason to check the input before
you convert it with VAL(). But in RapidQ you may get
very strange effects (look at my second example). So
you need to check the user's input before you call the
VAL function with the user's input. I think this strange
behaviour of the RapidQ's VAL function is worth to declare
it as bug.

Regards
Martin
