well in spite of the soup that passed for clear skies last night I managed to
take one shot out
the back of the garage of the Orion nebula.
The seeing at best would have been a 2/5
It's a tad washed and at the most out as I had to shoot over the freeway and
the exibition
grounds.
Still for a single shot I'm happy with it.

Jeff, excellent for a single shot in the city, lets hope for clear
skies this coming Tuesday for the Moon/Pleiades conjunction.

You had asked me to play the IYA video at the meeting. I will bring my laptop and play it from the website. That way we can also browse the IYA webpage.
What I will need is the user name and password to access the internet from the university. Usually Gord just walks up and enters his password and user name so I have no idea what it is (rightfully so)
Also if you need to fill some time I can go through the photo galleries that are on our Yahoo Group.
Doh....that was supposed to go direct to Barb....please pardon my
blundering

I'm not sure how I first came across Ole Uncle Rod Molise other than
we share the same taste in Music.
Rod teaches astronomy to undergrads in Mobile Alabama and is the
author of a few books (check the link for references
http://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&search-type=ss&index=books&field-author=Rod%20Mo\
llise&page=1
Anyway Ole Rod also publishes a monthly blog and this time it's all
about the joys and unjoys of astronomy outreach....a good read so here
ya go

Quoting from Anne's House of Dreams, by L.M. Montgomery.
The sun had set and in the southwestern sky hung Venus, glorious and
golden, having drawn as near to her earth-sister as is possible for
her. Anne and Gilbert saw the shadow cast by that brilliant star of
evening, . . . "I have heard that you can see the shadow of Venus only
once in a lifetime, and that within a year of seeing it your life's most
wonderful gift will come to you".
Astronomy can be found in all kinds of books, even though maybe not
exactly true that Venus is at its brightest when closest at conjunction.
Venus will be at its greatest brilliancy on February 18 but that is only
0.1 magnitude brighter than it is now. Go see if you if you can see
shadows cast by Venus.
Tenho
Forgot about the moon. You will have to wait until after the full moon
to see shadows cast by Venus.
I took a picture of it in September 2007,

Before I forget. Ken Maher has asked me to pass on greetings to the group
Life here in Ontario is nice, but really snowy. Since Nov. 11th I've
only had three evenings of sucker-holes (<2hours total observing time
even possible). I literally leap for joy each time I get to see the
moon again.
Say Hi to everyone for me at the next meeting!
Perhaps some of you saw how my students at Fairhaven School are
beginning to celebrate the IYA. Starlab, the portable planbetarium
has been there for 7 days now and leaves next week. Approximately 150
students will experience a realistic simulation of the night sky in
the comfort of their school gym. It is such a neat experience, that
the Star Phoenix decided to run this photo.
Thanks to all members who have volunteered to help us continue to
celebrate on Thursday, April 2nd with a Family Star Night at the school.
My next message will tell you how to access the newspaper photo
I spoke about this photograph at the meeting last night and did not
realize it was an archived release.
My apologies to Tenho about mixing up the dates....still it's a DAMNED
FINE photo

Good morning everyone - please find enclosed an important remember
from our IYA Cornerstone Partner, Dark Skies Awareness. Lets all join
in and do our part to tackle light pollution and preserve our night
sky for generations to come.
TAKE BACK THE NIGHT!
JOIN THE GLOBE AT NIGHT CAMPAIGN, 16-28 MARCH!
At least 2 out of 5 Americans, 1 out of 6 Europeans and 1 out of 10
people worldwide have never seen 90% of the stars in our night sky.
With half the world's population now living in cities, this problem is
only getting worse. Yet you can easily be part of a local solution to
a global problem.
Take back the night! Take a few minutes to monitor your local night
sky brightness, place your measurement on-line noting your location,
date and time and within a few weeks see a map of light pollution
levels worldwide.
Be part of the "GLOBE at Night" citizen-science campaign and make a
world of difference! The GLOBE at Night campaign runs March 16-28,
2009. Help preserve our natural heritage for generations to come. Find
out more information at www.globe.gov/globeatnight . GLOBE at Night is
an official International Year of Astronomy Dark Skies Awareness
cornerstone project.

Good Comet hunting Guys. Just ordered new cgem mount and 11 inch sct.
Bob, I need advice for a good quality lens (not fish eye) for new unit.
I've got a canon rebel xti/400 d. Should I go with a 200mm and higher
and what f ratio? Need to hire a moving company to move the new rig.
The specs are:
focal length 2800mm
aperture 280mm
eye piece 40mm
focal ratio 10
Should I put a reducer on because of the mag factor?
Thanx Guys! Clear skies!, dean
Sounds like a great scope set up Dean. I definitely would recommend
FRs. I use a 3.3 and 6.3 FR for my f10 sct, the FR 3.3 for camera
imaging wide angle shots. I use a 75-300 mm f4-5.6 Canon Ultrasonic
Lens for all my telephoto shots, seems to work well for me. I'm am
looking into getting a 1.5-2.0x telextender to give me a little more
magnification.

Wow! Great! thanks Bob.. Going to meet Ken from Allstar in Edmonton on Sunday He's driving up from didsbury to see his sister and will bring everything. It'll save a lot of freight charges. What's the difference between a barlow and a telextender? Is the telextender for the camera? Can't wait to try out the cgem mount, the only drawback is the weight, wait ... and possibly losing battery power on the mount. crystal clear skies ! dean

Just before Christmas, I finally received my
16” mirror back from Optic Wave Lab’s in CA. I had shipped it off
in May of 2008 to see what it would take to fix this mirror.
Now I just need to find someone who can
cut stainless steel into triangles for my 18pt cell. Anyone have any ideas?

Exactly Dean, the telextender is the equivalent term for a camera as
barlow is for a telescope.

I'm out of town and not sure if I'll be back for Observers Group on
Friday. Hope this doesn't cause any distress. Forecast is pretty
marginal at any rate.
Clear, dark skies,
Larry
Forecast has gone from marginal to @#$%! Hopefully things will clear by
next weekend.

I replaced the picture of comet Lulin on my website
http://www.lex.sk.ca/astro/350d/C2007N3_15.jpg with a new one taken
tonight, a single 5 minute exposure through my 80mm refractor, at -22 C.
Tenho
Wow!!
One of the best pictures of a comet I have seen!! Really beautiful,
Tenho. Thanks for sharing.
